Please review redesigned store

Guest

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, i decided to redesign my store and even though i'm still working on a few things, the site is currently live due to the fact that i started getting orders and product questions after i submitted my feed to froogle, so please no test orders.

I'm still working on putting all products in their right categories so some products might not show up since they're not assigned to a category yet...i will be uploaded better quality product images soon, and change all prices, as i currently have suggested retail prices up. Besides that the front end of the site is completed...everything else i'm working on is on the admin side....so if you catch a bug, or problem please let me know.

What i'm looing for are:

1. load time (at different connections, 56k, dsl, cable...etc)

2. If it is User friendly

3. Design

4. Bugs (problems)

***Lastly i will like to thank Mibble, Nimmit, Burt, Kamal and Andrew K. for helping me out with some tough questions.

Wow,

Great site. One thing that I think could use some work in the home page. I think you might have too many items with images on the home page, you have to scroll way down to see all of it. I think it might be a bit much.

Load times were pretty good on my cable modem.

Very easy to use.

I would love to see a list of your contribs you used. You have a great site, keep it up!

Did you review mine???

I only have one complaint, I hate having to scroll to the right!

Other than that, I like the look.

You need to add an (s) to:

*All new customer get a 3% coupon on all products*

And maybe re-word that, it sounds a bit off.

New customers will receive a 3% discount coupon.

hth :)

Hey Kristine, i'll sure find your site and review it...

Thanks for the feedback and for catching that typo...i'll work on it. if you don't mind me asking, what is your screen resolution?...I have a wide screen notebook so, i don't see the scroll on my screen.

networkcablesonline.com, Thanks for the feedback...i will look into cutting down the featured products from 12 to 9...

If you're really interested in seeing the list of contributions (35), pm me and i'll send you the list...way too many to list in here.

Anything else guys...?

Thank you

Rob

I am on a 1 meg connection and the pages don't load very fast, about 5 seconds of blank screen.

Gift Certificate logo seems to be 110,000 bytes (a bit too large). You might want to redo that one down to about 5,000 bytes. And check your other images.

We do NOT share any information we collect from our customers with other companies or our affiliates
I know, here we go again. How do you process Credit Cards and ship products if you don't share the information.

On your Geotrust logo on your home page the alt text says "all credit cards accepted" but you don't take Discover, Walmart, Canadian Tire, etc. Sorry I always seem to be the devils advocate with these things. Maybe move that section over to the right banner, even them out a bit more.

Your BizRate alt tag says your are customers certified gold but I came up with "not customer certified" from the BizRate site???????

Your UPS shipping statements are somewhat repetative. It says the same thing over and over agian. I think it could all be combined into 1 paragraph.

In your Low Price Guarantee section for the companies bestbuy.com, circuitcity.com, crutchfield.com, buy.com, amazon.com I would put a TM or Copyright symbol (which ever one it is) beside each one. Last thing you need is one of them coming after you.

I like the look of your site and the feel. Is there a way to make your middle section a bit narrower. I hate scrooling across the page and it doesn't quite fit.

I like the way you have laid out your site. Clean, neat and organized. Very easy to find my way around. All the pages seemed slow to load but I don't think it is just the occational graphic, there is something else. Do you have Gzip turned on? The only other thing that I could think of is your top banner, sign in, or the live help which I couldn't get a byte size on.

Nice job.

Hey Java R, Thanks for the pointer...

1. you're the first person to report that the site loads slow..everyone else iv'e asked said it loaded fine...but i'll look into it.

2. i'm aware of the gift voucher image and that's why i haven't uploaded all 7 yet... will get to that soon.

3. I'll look into the bizrate logo, that's what bizrate provided me after my registration. and i wasn't aware of the credit card txt so i'll fix that asap since i only accept amex, visa and mastercard.

4. Yes i have gzip turned on...is that a good thing or a bad thing?

5. About my placing a copyright sign next to my competitors, i don't think that's a big deal...buy dot com has listed over 10 of their competitors without any copyright signs.

6. lastly, good point about the privacy issue you brought up but i'm not exactly sure if i'm sharing that information with my credit card processor.

*can someone clarify this for me. Thank you

my screen is 800X600

I'm on dial up and the page loads a little slow, but not as bas as some. I didn't notice earlier because I was loading a few other windows at the same time. And I'm used to slow page loading :( LOL

i'm not exactly sure if i'm sharing that information with my credit card processor.
When processing Credit Cards you have to send the customers information (share it) with whoever processes the CC for you, otherwise how are you going to get paid. Same goes with the shipping company. It is just a point of being as accurate as possible. Check out amazon.com and e-trust.com for good privacy statements.

I checked the speed again and am still getting fairly slow load times. Not very slow but just a second or two slower. GZip is good as far as I know.

Okay, i will revise my privacy info...thank you.

anyone else using dial up...i think i want to make sure the site is not too slow...i'm not sure if i can do much about 22k and 56k, i think no matter what i do it will still load slow but i just want to make sure it loads at a decent time...so anyone else???

Thanks guys.

22 seconds is def. not good enough...so i will look into the problem...i'm not exactly sure why it's loading so slow for dial up. I've done a lot to optimize the site.

i'm open for any suggestions.

i like you colors and graphics. Good first impression. What contributioin did you use for the live help?

Thank you...i'm using crafty syntax...it was very easy to install and bug free...all the other live help contributions i tried before crafty syntax were too buggy.

I don't think i'm allowed to post a link to crafty syntax in here so PM me if you need the link.

When I load my site which is a standard osC site it pops up fast and then you see something like "18 items remaining to download", usually pics and stuff. With your site I get a white screen and then it is all there at once. I don't know what you did to change that but I personally like to see something/anything happening on the screen.

i'm aware of this...i think it's the mod i installed to make the page load faster...why it loads in this sequence i'm not really sure. i mean it could be a good thing if it shows white then the full page in a few seconds if you know what i mean...how long does it take to load the entire page for you (after the white page)?

ps...on my dsl i see the white screen for about 2 seconds then the entire page pops up.

After loading your home page I click to get to another page. The original page stays for about 1 second and then the screen goes white for about 4 seconds and then the whole page shows up. If the mod is easy to take out you may want to give that a try and see how it goes.

Hey, it wasn't easy installing that module so it's going to be a pain to get rid of it...i'll look at other alternatives. Thank you

65^ 143483* Total (^unique objects)

# Congratulations. This site is using HTTP compression, otherwise called content encoding using gzip. The sizes reported here are for compressed content sent from the server to the client.

* CSS alternate stylesheets may be referenced in the HTML but are not actually downloaded until they are needed and are therefore not included in the total page size.

Analysis and Recommendations

TOTAL_OBJECTS - Warning! The total number of objects on this page is 65 - consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refine, and optimize your external objects. Replace graphic rollovers with CSS rollovers to speed display and minimize HTTP requests.

TOTAL_IMAGES - Warning! The total number of images on this page is 62, consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refine, and optimize your graphics. Replace graphic rollovers with CSS rollovers to speed display and minimize HTTP requests.

TOTAL_CSS - Congratulations, the total number of external CSS files on this page is 1. Because external CSS files must be in the HEAD of your HTML document, they must load first before any BODY content displays. Although they are cached, CSS files slow down the initial display of your page.

TOTAL_SIZE - Warning! The total size of this page is 143483 bytes, which will load in 41.60 seconds on a 56Kbps modem. Consider reducing total page size to less than 30K to achieve sub eight second response times on 56K connections. Pages over 100K exceed most attention thresholds at 56Kbps, even with feedback. Consider contacting us about our optimization services.

TOTAL_SCRIPT - Congratulations, the total number of external script files on this page is 1. External scripts are less reliably cached than CSS files so consider combining scripts into one, or even embedding them into high-traffic pages.

HTML_SIZE - Congratulations, the total size of this HTML file is 9530 bytes, which less than 20K. Assuming that you specify the HEIGHT and WIDTH of your images, this size allows your page to display content in well under 8 seconds, the average time users are willing to wait for a page to display without feedback.

IMAGES_SIZE - Warning! The total size of your images is 121856 bytes, which is over 30K. Consider optimizing your images for size, combining them, and replacing graphic rollovers with CSS.

SCRIPT_SIZE - Congratulations, the total size of all your scripts is 250 bytes, which is less than 1160 bytes. This will fit into one higher-speed TCP-IP packet.

CSS_SIZE - Warning! The total size of your external CSS is 12097 bytes, which is over 8K. Consider optimizing your CSS for size by eliminating whitespace, using shorthand notation, and combining multiple CSS files where appropriate.

Whats an afflicate? - Footer links

Nice site though, too much white space at the bottom for me though.

9 times out of 10 its a PEBCAK Error (Problem exists between chair and keyboard)

Replace that and you're fine...

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi guys, urgent help needed...i deleted all my products and categories this weekend and uploaded a new feed through easy populate...i didn't get any errors on the site and it doesn't look like there was a problem with the upload however, when i click on one of my main categories...(ie Accessories or Cameras & Camcorders), the new product for April doesn't show any products...but when i click on the sub categories i see products under the new products for April. This was working fine for my parent categories before this new feed was uploaded so i'm very lost. Anyone know why i'm having this problem? Thank you all in advance. site is live so i need to fix this quick.

It loaded fine on my 56k dial-up modem. I have a side scroll also because I am using 800x600 resolution, which looks best on my five-year-old monitor.

I love the look and layout! Great job!!!

Thank you for that feedback, i optimized the site again after i first posted for reviews...so i'm glad it loads okay on your 56k since i haven't tested it on a 56k system.

about the scroll...i actually had it so it fits perfectly on a 800x600 screen but the content of the site was squeezed so i decided to increase the width a little. i'm sorry about that...
