Just guessing, in a few days a new paid PRO addon will appear offering a "new" cache system. LOL

No I'm pretty sure the reasoning was that due to the speed of Phoenix it is now defunct.

Hard coded now so that add-ons with new tables didn't need to be added into core.

thanks for the explanation. It's good to share those things

I'm pretty sure it was shared, it was taken out in 1.0.3.0 if I remember rightly.

I got t hat. wanted to know why?  why are they hardcoded?

If you have an add-on that add's a new table you'd have to add it into the database_tables.php file. People had gotten into the habit of this so taking it away forced developers to hard code. It makes the core cleaner and add-ons easier to integrate.

I wanna to put it back.

You have options.

1) easy....Simply role back to the version that still has everything you need.

2)some work.... Find the code you need and add it back to your version

3) find something else to use idf none of the above are an option.

As of 1.0.4.0 cache is still in the code from what I can tell but others may know better. I don't have anything after that.

I checked back and it appears to have been taken out in 1.0.2.8

Lots of things get removed/changed in order to facilitate the forward movement of the codebase.

Filenames and DB tables - easier installation of addons/apps
Cache - antique system.  Actually slowed down Phoenix in testing.

The beauty of the open code base is such that anyone can add it back in to suit their needs.

Again I'm sure if I'm wrong some one will be kind and post a correction...

From what I remember cache.php only coverd language files, cats box, manuf box, and also purchased module if installed so not to  big job to reinstall.

I understand what you are saying and I see that you have tremendous work. I wish I could help u financially but I can't and not because I don't have money.

but I disagree with u on filenames. it had a lot of uses.

seo for example and changing the name of login.php and  changing the name of tables and so on. I don't have to agree with everything or like everything in order to appreciate and like your work as a whole which I do

I have to go back and look at Chemo's addons. I am planning to stop at 1.0.5 and wait till some of the addons to also be converted.

It's perfectly OK to disagree.  It is what makes the world go round.

All the old code dating back to 2001 is available, so for anything taken out...put it back to suit your needs.

That's difficult for FILENAMEs and TABLEs.  Because it requires rewriting huge amounts of core code.  Basically every tep_href_link and tep_db_query line.

I would point out that

those example uses are easier to do via mod_rewrite and a modification to tep_href_link rather than manually replacing hard coded values with FILENAMEs.  I.e. I don't think the solution is to reverse the change so much as to move forward with other changes.

Always back up before making changes.

I understand what is involved.it is pretty impossible. and I don't see how it was necessary and if it ws not done probably all the addons would work. and the transition would be easier. as it is everybody now runs around and reinventing things.

People have to learn to accept that not even Phoenix is standing still any longer. Oscommerce did that for many years and before forward movement it was considered a laughing stock  and dead in the water. With Garys input and the help of those that want to see it advance, everyone is getting a better code base. Addons can now be installed in a few clicks rather than a whole lot of manual code changes. Updating the store code is again very simple, and takes a few minutes. If you want old and outdated use an old and outdated version.

Stop thinking what was, and start thinking what could be.
