Dear All,

My website has been upgraded to Phoenix  (latest version).

www.ancientcointraders.com

It was previously Edge BS3 (pre-frozen).

Main improvements are:

1. much faster

2. new features in Phoenix (sitewide hooks, modular shopping cart, product_info pages, improved modules etc.) make life easier.

3. Bootstrap 4 has much neater ways of doing things than Bootstrap 3. Shorthand classes in particular make things cleaner and simpler. Bootstrap 4 is also mobile first.

A special thank you to @burt for accepting my request to assist me with what was a very quick 'migration'  to Phoenix. This involved starting off fresh with Phoenix, making change and cleaning up all my blundered custom 'coding' from my BS3 installation.

Thank you also to @burt for keeping the project alive.

I have done a lot of comparisons recently against other open-source and commercialised shopping cart software. I  also habitually look closely at any website I am on as I am sure many others here do.  Phoenix holds its own against most others. You can get a nice-looking website up and running fairly quickly from scratch.

Happy as always for any feedback or areas of improvement.

Regards,

Peter

Note: I could not edit my original post on this board for some reason, so happy of course for them to me merged if a moderator obliges.

HI @René H4

Thank you for the kind words and suggestion.

I plan to revisit the footer suffix.

Actually, I am not using any themes.  Changes I made to the index.php page:

  • bootstrap well
  • categories images App - modified an existing App to get the desired look
  • Horizontal categories menu App
  • Carousels  - new, special, and featured products Apps which I updated for Bootstrap 4 and using cards instead of thumbnails. I like the effect as they look like collectible cards.

Peter

Looks good!  I'm not a super-fan of carousels but that's just a personal preference.

There is a stray ?> just above the Footer area (only on the main index.php page) - not sure where that's coming from though.  Maybe the index.php language file?

  • 2 weeks later...

I do not agree that it "looks good", yet i respect the "personal effort" into it.
In my POV it sucks and should have a template much more related to old coins.
I not want to be an ashole, as i RESPECT he did it all by himself.
But i prefer more creativity, for that it would be cool if have some experience designers around us.
And perhaps find the reason why osc is so much avoided by them. ( they are a KEY in make things big).
Just saying. ( i say it again, i respect the personal effort, for that i like it, yet............ it is NOT what it could be, i might put the ladder to high)
Still, compliments for personal achievements.
( i not like GUTMENSCH reactions, just to make you feel good)

The container-fluid not work on your site. ( it is to wide, show more compact)
The standard href color code neither ( to much blue).
I like your fonttype for your site.

on the product info........
No need to put title and price like that
I need to stretch my eye from left to right to find out.
I like to keep my eyes same point ( not searching).
End of tips!

Get rid of the < > carousel.

i seen to much of this JCM carousel...............

In your case it would be cool to have a scrolling index page.
you stay on index.............. just scroll and when reach another category........
just put a big:
THIS IS ANOTHER CATEGORY (with another background)

- and start normal, as you only have 4 ( main) categories ( limits clicks)

Would be cool if do it yourself and show back here.

Henry out ( i like your type of product as it is in point of view belong to a special specific product, and is un-common............. for that............ i like your site as is. if ask criticism.......well you already read it iof came this far).

Thanks everyone for their feedback.

This topic disappeared for some reason and glad it is back as I had not read most of the above.

@Heatherbell Thank you for your kind words

@burt Thanks once again. I have fixed the stray ?>

@fridgebox

Thank you for your feedback.

  • I like the overall look and feel of my website compared with other coin sites. I am absolutely open to improving the design. If you could be more specific on what you mean by making it more related to old coins that would be helpful. On templates, I am not impressed by the majority of templates available otherwise I would have 'borrowed' and re-purposed one for my site. I did consider it.
  • There are some specific observations you have made above which I am considering, such as the default link colour and the product info title / price layout - thank you.
  • I cannot see how I can make the parallax (?) type effect you are talking about work for my index.php page but I think it would work well on other pages e.g. about_us.php. I will experiment. I liked the website you provided in your example above and I would guess it would be well outside my capability to replicate anything like that...

@JcMagpie

Yes, too harsh.

I like your carousel modules. They provide a neat way to easily scroll through different products on mobile view.

😂 a little harsh me thinks?

The HUGE left /right navigation arrows is the reason. I seen no one change these in the live review sites. When used in a box they stand even more out. Nothing personal, Just An estetic observation 👍👨‍👧

Look who is making the comments. Its Henry again. Been allowed back in for some reason. Just block or ignore his comments.

This is a review topic, (positive) critism is apreciated. I do not think i said anything wrong and the OP apreciated even the tips i gave.

You could have followed your own advice and Just ignore me and not comment.

These are the kind of comments what made it start in the first place.

😁 it's ok Henry, just personal choice every website owner will have own idea of what is good or not. After all it's just a little css to change and you can make them anything you like.

Take a look on https://kenwheeler.github.io/slick/

Perhaps it inspire you.👍

Hi Henry, welcome again!

Very good ideas the slick.
Is it possible to arm them as an addon for the index?

regards

Valqui

I love this addon !!! I am using it on my current old EDGE BS3 site.
Is it compatible with Phoenix? If not, are you going to get an update?
