zefeena
Hi, I was going to use the 'Enhanced Categories Box' add-on, but firstly the description really didn't assure me it was what I wanted, and then on further investigation it seems many people have had difficulty so I decided not to risk it! When I made my first website I used an add-on, that put all the categories into boxes on the page, the menu still being down the left side. This made it very visual and easy to find things (for the customer). I can't find the add-on, and maybe it would be no good with the latest version of oscommerce anyhow. Can anyone give me a link to an easy and reliable add on that will do what I want please. (and if anyone can tell me why my return key doesn't work when i'm typing on this forum i'd love to know that too!) ♥bruyndoncx
I believe that is also part of hte modular front page add-on that is supported by kymation KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON I do not use the responsive bootstrap version since i coded my responsive version earlier, but i have bought every 28d of code package to support burts effort and keep this forum alive (albeit more like on life support). zefeena
yes I did notice that add-on, though the description was very vague and I couldn't find a screen shot, also it did look a little more complex than I need. I know the original contribution I used was VERY simple and did all I needed, but that was 5-6 years ago, so obviously the basic program is lots different now I presume. ♥bruyndoncx
google 'oscommerce main categories' https://www.google.com/search?q=oscommerce+main+categories and you get links to contribution. I don't think if it is version 2.2 or 2.3 would really make a difference KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON I do not use the responsive bootstrap version since i coded my responsive version earlier, but i have bought every 28d of code package to support burts effort and keep this forum alive (albeit more like on life support). ♥kymation
The original is probably the Categories Images addon. That was designed for osCommerce 2.2, but it will still work with 2.3. There is a version of Categories Images provided with the Modular Front Page addon. It's now a module, so installation and configuration are all done in the Admin. There's less code editing involved when making changes, so it's easier to do. The two addons are about equal in installation complexity, so I recommend Modular Front Page as the more versatile choice. Regards Jim See my profile for a list of my addons and ways to get support. zefeena
I downloaded the modular frontpage but I cannot even open it. It is in a file type I have never seen before and just shows as a blank icon on my computer, so that's a non-starter for me! ♥joli1811
Hi Kellie, That is a compressed file you will need a program like http://www.7-zip.org/ to open it is free open source . Just right click after install and extract the files they should then appear in a normal yellow folder. Regards Joli To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often. zefeena
Hi, thank you all! I tried the original contribution and for some reason it didn't work, so I installed the Frontpage module. It was a little tricky but it has worked. However, I had previous installed Hide Category with Zero Products osCommerce 2.3.3. A very simple edit which required to me to Open catalog/includes/modules/boxes/bm_categories.php and replace the entire tep_show_category function. Now this no-longer works and empty categories are showing which is not good as I am just loading my products and many of the categories are empty. Anyone any ideas how I might get it to work again!? ♥kymation
You'll have to compare the modified version of bm_categories.php with your current version and make the changes. Use a comparison program (Meld, WinMerge, etc.) to show the differences. There should be only one or two small changes. Regards Jim See my profile for a list of my addons and ways to get support. zefeena
Hi, Actually I have been a bit thick here! The change is still working and the categories that are empty still do not show up in the menu on the left, so that's okay. Obviously I have added the category images module now and that does not include any code to prevent empty categories showing up. Would you be able to tell me the necessary code to add to the front page module to make the empty category images be hidden please? I can normally manage to install the add-ons that you clever people write, but honestly, I do not understand one word of the code i'm changing, so there is no chance of me working it out myself! ♥kymation
I'm not familiar with your Hide Category module, but it shouldn't be too hard to add. Compare the code in the Addon package to the original. You'll find a small change to the SQL. Add that code to the SQL in the Categories Images module and you're good. Regards Jim See my profile for a list of my addons and ways to get support. zefeena
Hi, the add on is this one http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/6911 I did compare the original and changes - that bit was easy, but when I then looked at the frontpage module I could not see any resemblance! Never mind, I'll just have to get on with listing, which is great fun with my full 0.25Mb internet - actually that's the download speed, the uploads even slower! UK for you, you either get great views or good internet but you can't have both! ♥kymation
Modular Front Page is a collection of modules. You need to find the module you want to change and compare the SQL in that. In the case of Categories Images, that's /catalog/includes/modules/front_page/fp_categories_images.php. Look at the SQL code in lines 44 - 55. If you're showing subcategories, you also need to change the SQL in lines 164 - 175. The added code is the same in both cases. Drakx
Hello Jim, i've installed your Modular Front Page Mod, works all well. The question i have is this, is there a way to make the 'categories images' persistant on the Frontpage? I.e; if selecting a given categorie, that the op Level categories wil remain visible for easier navigation. Thx upfront, also for the great work. Barry. ♥kymation
Once you've clicked on a category you are no longer on the front page, so the front page modules don't show. There's no easy way to add the Categories Images module to that page. Regards Jim See my profile for a list of my addons and ways to get support.
