zefeena
Hi, Trying to start a new website on a new domain - all new and the control panel is via the host so very unfamiliar to me. Just downloaded the OS files and it is a zipped folder on my computer. When i tried to upload it via FTP it said - file too big. So i tried to unzip it, and it said: 'your securit settings do not allow this action' Any advice - completely useless at these things, so please feel free to explain like your talking to an idiot! Thank you Kellie Running a botched up version of osCommerce Online Merchant v2.3.4 bootstrap with the dresscode theme installed, numerous add-ons, terrible coding, terrible website, but will have to make do until I have made up for my losses and can risk shutting down for a couple of weeks while I start all over again. - I did not install my program but am endeavouring to fix it with your help. MrPhil
Well, you might want to play with the hosting control panel for a while and get familiar with it. I'm worried that your host considers a standard osC installation zip file "too big" -- it should only be a few megabytes. Maybe you should ask them what their limit is, before you invest any more time in this hosting. Make sure you are transferring it in binary mode, not ASCII (text), so you don't corrupt it. What is your PC running (typically Windows) and what is the server (typically Linux)? Are you using your host control panel or a separate FTP client (e.g., FileZilla) to upload the file? I presume you were trying to unzip on your PC (were you using File Explorer?), and not the server (many servers will unzip files for you, but you said you couldn't get the entire file up there in the first case). Worst case, you can unzip the .zip file on your PC and use an FTP client to upload all the files in one go. "7-Zip" is a very good tool to zip and unzip files. Just be careful if you let FileZilla automatically select the transfer mode that you don't have any extensionless files that need binary transfer, because it will select ASCII! You can always find such files and manually transfer them over (again) after manually selecting "binary" mode. Hint: always install a major application such as osC into its own subdirectory (e.g., /catalog or /shop). This allows you to install other applications without their stepping on each other's toes, and without cluttering up your root directory, and you will never have to move your store (and lose all your search engine results and customer bookmarks). If you don't have a "landing page", use "URL rewriting" (such as in .htaccess) to automatically send visitors from / to /catalog (until such time that you create a landing page). Use a silent rewrite, not a 301 redirect!
♥14steve14
Can you not install using your hosting cpanel account. Many hosts have ways of uploading and installing new programs and software. REMEMBER BACKUP, BACKUP AND BACKUP
zefeena
The control panel is at https://account.34sp.com, rather than at www.apattern.co.uk/cpanel which is rather strange. I have my usual website on cpanel, this site is new and i used a different host as mine has being having a few problems of late and i thought i'd try out something new with a view to possibly moving my main site eventually. I don't really understand any of the program side of computers, i learn what i need to but its soemthing of a chore and really doesn't come natural! However, I refuse to let anyone else do it for me as I prefer to be independednt even if it is hard work - fortunately there seems to be lots of peopel on here willing to help - phew! I'm not really sure even what the root directory is - i mean would it be too much trouble to call it ROOT! so i think i found the right place whihc i have as: var/www/vhosts/apattern (the last folder being the one i created i think!) So do i create a further folder: var/www/vhosts/apattern/catalog and put the whole file into it? The host has suggested i use an FTP program thing which i have downloaded. So at this point i think all i need to do is make sure i am going to be uploading to the correct folder and then wait until midnight when all is quiet int he village as i i have the worlds slowest internet connection!! MrPhil
The control panel is at https://account.34sp.com, rather than at www.apattern.co.uk/cpanel which is rather strange. Different from your old one, but certainly not "strange". You're signing in to your new host's (34sp.com?) "account" access machine, under secure (SSL, https) link. It's just a slightly different route to get to your files. It will be necessary if your domain name is still pointing to the old server and host, as www.apattern.co.uk/cpanel is not yet pointing to the new host. I'm not really sure even what the root directory is - i mean would it be too much trouble to call it ROOT! It's the place where a visitor to "just your domain name" would end up: e.g., http://www.apattern.co.uk. It is what HTML sees as /. Yeah, it would have been nice to call it "ROOT", but they need a way to separate the men from the boys (or in your case, the women from the girls). So much water under the bridge... so i think i found the right place whihc i have as: var/www/vhosts/apattern (the last folder being the one i created i think!) /var/www/vhosts/apattern/ sounds reasonable as the root of your site. Are you sure you created "apattern"? Assuming you're on a shared server, there needs to be something unique to your account (and site). So do i create a further folder: var/www/vhosts/apattern/catalog and put the whole file into it? Yes, your site should be in /catalog like that. Depending on exactly how your new control panel works to unzip a file, it may try to create a new directory (folder) for you. Try to discourage it from doing that. You want to unzip into /catalog itself (index.php, etc. will be there) rather than, say, /catalog/oscommerce231_install. If it ends up doing that, the easiest course is to use the control panel to move everything (probably one at a time) from /catalog/oscommerce231_install to /catalog. You should only have to move the top level -- everything at lower levels should follow. If it installs into /oscommerce231_install, use the control panel to erase /catalog (empty) and rename /oscommerce231_install to /catalog (or /store). Most control panels have a way to upload files to the site. You may find it much easier to learn to use an FTP client such as FileZilla to do the uploading (and downloading, if needed). Just experiment with it until you get the hang of it. You can unzip the osC zip file on your PC and upload all the files and directories directly to /catalog or /store in one operation. Again, feel free to experiment. You're not going to blow up any expensive equipment. You can always erase the files you upload and try again. While playing around with osC, you might want to hide it from the outside world until it's ready to go live. If the domain name is not yet pointing to the new server, you don't have to do anything. If it is, make the following /index.html file: <html> <head><title>Store Coming Soon!</title></head> <body><h1>A new APattern online store is coming soon! Watch for it!</h1></body> </html> That will keep search engines from cataloging your store until you erase /index.html and go live. The host has suggested i use an FTP program thing which i have downloaded. Yes, "FTP client". FileZilla is the one most people use.
zefeena
Hi, Thank you for a very comprehensive reply. I know some people must really enjoy programming, and 25 years ago, i too, loved to learn. But since my two boys came along and I have had to fend entirely for ourselves, then making money has become the priority. Hopefully when i retire i'll have the time to enjoy learning, at the moment, its merely a means to an end, and the quickiest route is the most preferred! The problem is, if you aren't doing these things every day, its easy to forget so its nice to have posts like this to jog the old memory cells. Currently if you type in the domain name it goes to the host site. Presumably as soon as i upload the Oscommerce files it will 'go' tot he shop? This isn't much of a problem as once it is set up it won't take me long to start adding products. I am very familiar with that side, and have managed to add contributions in the past with success, and generally i think i know what i want to do with this one. Are there any easy contributions to make the site look more professional (aesthically). My current site works great, but it isn't pretty! I don't want bells and whistles, just a nicer more polished look generally. MrPhil
If you load the store into /catalog (or /store), visitors would have to go to http://www.apattern.co.uk/catalog to enter the store. To avoid the extra "/catalog", you can update your /.htaccess to do a URL rewrite to send visitors to http://www.apattern.co.uk automatically to /catalog: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/catalog [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /catalog/$1 [L] Once you have other applications, and have written a "landing page" in / with links to /catalog and other applications, you can remove the rewrite.
