osCommerce

The e-commerce.

I don't believe it

Perhaps I should throw in the towel. :(

I clicked on every link after reading about an add on and not one will cause a download.

So how much per hour for a programmer? Couse if I recall right, they charge about $150.00/hour. :'(

So with my current mark-up of $1.00 per item or 5%, I should get out of the red in about 3 years. :o

What exactly is the problem? You want to sell downloadable products? Have you looked at the Super Download Store contribution?

www.jyoshna.com. Currently using OsC with STS, Super Download Store, Categories Descriptons, Manufacturers Description, Individual Item Status, Infopages unlimited, Product Sort, Osplayer with flashmp3player, Product Tabs 2.1 with WebFx Tabpane and other bits and pieces including some I made myself. Many thanks to all whose contributions I have used!

Hi Ben,

Thanks for replying. Rather than explaining it all, I have modified my signature.

I have edited and double checked the links in my signature. Within it are the following links:

The Main Portal at www.asanctuary.net

The OS Commerce gift shop,

and something I threw together to give an idea of what is wanted, I call it a preview.

That is not the layout desired, but when I was adding inventory to the first OS Commerce, the pictures were about 700 x 700 pixels, definitely not good.

I hope you will take a look to see what I mean

Thank you again

Well, all I can see really is that you haven't done anything to set up your shop beyond a bare install of osC. There isn't anything that is just going to download and put products in your store. The next step is for you to log in, enter some basic settings like your store name and address, bits of text here and there as the welcome page prompts you to do, etc, and add your own products. Even if you do just that much, without modifying typefaces or graphics to make the look and feel more consistent with your site, you will still have something usable. I suggest you start by entering the basic configuration settings in the admin section and adding some products into the catalog. After you've done that and need help tweaking it then come back and ask how to do this or that or look at adding some contributions and refinements.

Will do.

After all I have nothing to loose this time if I have to delete and re-install again (last time I had all my inventory in and when I edited the Front Page, we got a fatal error).

SOLVED for now.

Just take it step by step, get your products in, get it working with the standard install, backup any files before you change them, test what you've done before making another change. Changing the look and feel can be harder than adding many of the contributions that provide additional functions, because of the horrible mess of nested tables that is osC's front end.

I think he meant that after modifying his 'front page' - presumably index.php - none of the links worked. He doesn't appear to sell downloadable products.

Or it could be he hasn't found the magic download icon next to the date on the add on page.

If that is the case, got to this url

http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/500

and look at the right hand column and the click the icon with the downward facing arrow over what looks like a box.

Why would you send that to Paypal?

Apart from it not making any sense to anyone reading it...

It is up to you what you want the settings for the PP contribution to be and by the way they are set within osc.

I really don't understand what problem you have and what help you need.

Um, because I don't have access to any of that information on my PayPal account pages. I believe for PayPal to function then OS Commerce must have a method of incorporating PayPal into it's software.

Speaking of software, I received some communication from a staff member whom conveyed to me some corrections needed to be made by me. I am stymied on how to inform the staff that there seems to be a glitch in the forum software regarding the profile area, specifically Signatures. You see, there are words in the signature creation area that shouldn't be.

Here are those words (in case someone else knows how to inform OS Commerce that perhaps they may want to tweak the forum software to correct this over site).

Perhaps you were right after all in your first message Grey Wolf. Maybe you should get yourself a programmer, you might need someone to run it too....

Perhaps I lack the intelligence to build and operate a store as it seems you indicate.

Hmmm, Where would I find a programer? I seriously doubt that I would look in the local yellow pages. As I understand it, I am not permitted to offer payment anyone here on the forum, (per the policies in place) so .....

PayPal offers an area to build PayPal buttons, though they only function on html formats, not php.

But maybe this would work:

1. Create a link on the Front Page of Your Ssnctuary Gift Shop (operating with OS Commmerce) that takes the customer to a HTML page on the primary site

2. Create shoppingpage.html page on primary site with each of the items listed with an item number below a picture of the item

3. Place a note at the top of the page informing the customer to record the item number AND purchase price of each item they would like to purchase)

3. Build a PayPal button that can be place on the shoppingpage.html that I believe would link them to my PayPal account so that they can purchase the items they desire by entering the item number of each item and the price of that item.

4. To cover shipping costs I would also need the customer to enter either a NATIONAL or WORLD WIDE flat rate shipping cost AS IF IT WERE A PRODUCT and then enter the number of items purchased as the QUANTITY so as to ensure that sufficient funds are collected to pay for shipping.

Ponders the situation.

If I contact my host, and get a ssl I would then have encryption with my site being a https:// instead of http://, by doing that will the situation be improved?

Maybe I am over thinking this, but it seems a difficult situation.

Another possibility would be to open a store on eBay.

Quite frankly I am wondering isn't that why I got this software?

And precisely how is putting a space between angle brackets supposed to help? How did you think that doing so would make 'code visible' on the page? Do you just clutch ideas out of thin air and then do things expecting something you just made up without any idea what you are doing and no sound reason for doing it, to work in the way you intended?

You might get further by asking 'how do I do this?' (where 'this' is a clear and specific task) than by just doing things and then asking why what you've done doesn't work. Or not even asking and just making assertions that this or that is wrong in osC or the forum software.

To change a language or any defines item you have to change the text between the quote marks in define ('ITEM_NAME', 'item text' ); ie only modify the item text part. Leave brackets, quote marks, and the terminating semicolon intact. Also escape apostrophes in your item text with a backslash ie it\'s not it's etc.

Hello baddop & multimixer,

It was about not being able to figure out how to down load add-ons. Because my store was still not operational, it quickly turned into about setting up a store with OS Commerce ver2.2 RC2. Specifically,

Editing out the text in the center white block on the Front Page

Adding information about my PayPal account so that once the Front Page is changed so that it looks like a store

Ben - Thanks, I will go back and try using the information that you supplied.

Frankly your ability to come up with bizarre ideas and inability to clearly state problems or even to realise you need to ask before doing something that makes no sense at all does make me wonder whether you will ever manage to set up a store. But assuming you genuinely do want to set up your shop with osC, I suggest that you:

1) Do not even think of applying any add-ons to the store until you have got a working set up that will at least allow customers to select a product and complete the checkout process.

2) Do not bother about the 'look and feel' of the store, just use default fonts and layout.

3) Do ask how to set up Paypal instead of trying to invent and pursue some crazy idea about it (you need a Paypal merchant account and you will find all the settings you need to work with osC in your Paypal merchant account settings options).

4) Do not change any php file unless you understand what you are supposed to do to. If you are not sure, ask. Don't ask under a topic title that says nothing about your problem such as 'I don't believe it', because unless someone has time for idle curiosity they may not even bother to read what you don't believe. Even if they do, they won't answer if they think it's a wind up - and your posts so far are pretty much enough to make even the most patient person roll their eyes and decide not to respond. I'm not sure why I'm bothering myself.

5) Do make a backup copy first before changing any php file, so you can go back to the original if your change doesn't work.

:'( Geez!!! Feeding vampires and trolls. U know sometimes people like this person who posted, and I include myself, just really don't know what the hell they are doing, sooo, (well atleast I try to read and read everything I can, before I post something) after trying to look for answers, you post a question, that's what forums are for right? If it bothers people so much to answer "stupid questions" according to their critique, than just don't answer them!!! Wowwwwww, people can be such !@#$%^& Relaxxxxx B)

Just felt I had to comment on this, I've seen many similar situations, and I just don't think it's fair to get lashed out, because you ask something, that for others might seem like a 2+2=4, but to some of us it's not so simple.

Anyways, thank god their are many people who understand, and offer the help. Thanks to all those who have helped me one way or the other.

Thanks,

I'm still trying to figure out why you would place a link on the oscommerce store's front page to "the main html shop" site then make Paypal buttons on the html site when oscommerce does everything for you........to edit the "front page" -called index page or index.php- go into your admin>tools>define languages. there you will see a list of php files. click on "index.php" and that controls the text in the body of the front page. there is where you add or edit the text. My suggestion to you would be the same as Ben said and start with the basic configuration of the store....don't jump back and forth from the index page to the Paypal module to making links....start one task and complete it then move onto the next. Also, do NOT put space between any code....that will screw up everything then you'll really be f***ed. This link is to the OsCommerce "Knowledge Base" >CLICK ME< and there is help for everything under the stock install broken down into topics for you to follow. It can be a bit confusing if you are new to OsCommerce.....I understand that....but if it is indeed too much for you to handle or if you don't have the time you can always hire someone to do it for you or go with a different e-commerce solution...there are alternatives that let you drag & drop all the features you want for your store and you don't need any html/php knowledge at all to make a store....the downside is that you MUST use the designs that are pre-made and extremely common and you have to pay for EVERYTHING. If I were you I would uninstall your store, re-install it and start with the knowledge base. if you get stuck on something look in the forum for a topic that states the same problem you are having....if you can't find one then create a new topic asking THE QUESTION YOU NEED AN ANSWER FOR....not "I don't believe it" because most people will ignore it.
