Google XML Sitemap SEO

Recommended Posts

thank you once again for you great contributions.

i am having this issue:

i used to have the google xml sitemap version 1.2 installed but i tried to upgrade to 1.3 but now i am getting an error.

what i did was i copied and overwrote all existing sitemap files but when i tried to run the sql file using phpmyadmin, i got an error message.

is there some way to upgrade that i am not awair of? i am a complete noob at all of this so maybe i could be making a simple mistake.

when i tried to run the sitemap index file it says that all sitemaps were generated successfully, however when you go to the sitemap file, it gives me the following error:

XML Parsing Error: no element found

Location: http://localhost/catalog/sitemapindex.xml

Line Number 1, Column 1:

please help

thank you,

joe

Seems to be a problem with your confiugre file since there isn't a domain name.

the reason why there is no domain name is because i am running it off of a prototyping server on localhost and not a web server.

is it maybe a problem with the database file? do i need to remove the previous file before running the new one? how do you do that? i am not even sure where i need to be in when i run the sql file. i did it for the first file, but i cant remember what i did. i looked in by database table where i expected it to be and didnt see anything that referenced to google xml sitemap. i tried to import the file in the store table but got an error. when i tried to go back to a previous store mod version just to test the sitemap file i still got the same XML Parsing Error.

I have a question.

v1.3 seems to have installed flawlessly.

When I go to the google webmaster tools and see what has been indexed, I a bit 'ol goose egg (0)

Between the 3 xmls, I should have nearly 700 urls or some portion indexed, right?

Anyone else notice this?

How many items gets indexed depends on the site so there's no way to answer your question. But if you are asking why none get indexed, you'll need to do some work on your end. Do the site maps actually have content? If not, what is the result of the diagnostic.

If you have not already submitted the sitemap index to Google click the link below.
Before you do I HIGHLY recommend that you view the XML files to make sure the data is correct.

For your convenience here is the CRON command for your site:

The names have been changed to protect the innocent....

Here is a smattering of the products xml:

Everything looks right, weighting is valid, urls are correct (again changed to protect the innocent)

this is what google reports:

Do you get comparable indexing for your site(s)?

I don't understand what the problem is. Everything looks correct except the maps are storing in the catalog directory but your links say the mystore directory. So maybe you are submitting the wrong site? The last sitemap in the google list also has a problem but that is not part of this contribution so it doesn't apply here.

I'm still getting the below error.

I try replacing the XML with blank files.

I try checking the sitemap.class.php but both solution did not resolve this problem.

the admin/configuration has disappeared when this error occur.

The only way to get it back is to run the SQL comment again. The Admin link will reappear but show a duplicate of everything.

There's a mistake in your configure file. Go back through the posts and see those where others have posted the test results and see how the "Opening" line differs from yours.

I changed the paths in the pasted code - it is correct and off the store root in reality - as seen in the image.

Yes, the website root version (sitemap.xml) is independent and not part of the question.

As I said, it all looks correct, especially when I haven't altered the paths for posting.

Just wondered if your results as far as indexing are similar?

Thanks,

Corey

Seems to be a problem with your confiugre file since there isn't a domain name.

Jack

i fixed one problem so far . perhaps i didnt understand what you were telling me. i took your advice and checked the configure file. it turns out one of the modifications altered the configure file that referenced to the server name. i am still getting a "no element found" error for the category map. it doesnt matter anyway, as long as the map is generated for the products. i will just list that map as my sitemap in robots.txt.

thank you for your help :)

is there anyway to get rid of all maps except the product map completely since i dont have any intention of using them anyway? or even better, to generate a product map only instead of an index map?

thanks for your help. i hope im not too much of a pest i know it must take a long time to give support on all of these forum threads having 900 users in all ;)

Hi Jack,

I have a general question, which I'm not sure where to place. I have tried on the General forum but got no replies. Since you are involved in so many contributions, and since you reply in such great patience, I thought you might be able to shed some light on the matter. I don't believe this wasn't mention before but I have been looking and looking and couldn't find the right answer/contribution.

I have a Multilanguage store (hebrew, english, arabic - soon) with three problems.

1.The site always reverts back to the English language; I can start with Hebrew, for instance:

http://www.my_store.com/catalog/index.php?language=he

but when clicking a category link the path changes to:

http://www.my_store.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=1

At this point the language is still Hebrew, but if I wait for a while an hit "Refresh" the store will revert back to English, regardless of Default language settings.

2.

As a result of 1 - wouldn't that cause me trouble with google indexing? - If a page will always be indexed without the ?language= parameter Customers will never be able to reach my Hebrew or Arabic pages directly from the google search.

3.

I guess this is also true for sitemaps. I have tried the google XML siute map but I understand that it doesn't produce the language parameter too (I created the special language-xml file manually based on the xml sitemap ).

So:

I would like to display all links with the language parameter, no matter where or when:

Three of the maps can be controlled via the settings in admin. The index sitemap is used when there are more than one sitemap. But if you want to get rid of the categories one, which I think is a mistake, then it is not needed. You would then only list the one sitemap on google and delete the other sitemap files.

There isn't any way to control that in the contribution. You would have to edit the sitemap_class.php file you are using and ignore those as the categories are read in.

i was still getting that error message even after the last post. it turns out that i had the "alternate" map selected in the admin settings instead of "standard". when i changed it to standard, all maps were generated correctly.

yeah, about the categories map, i was debating whether or not to have one seeing that it would be duplicate content but i guess it doesnt matter anyway because i have all duplicate content blocked in my robots.txt anyway using the wildcard (*) in combination with a common code string that may create the duplicate content issue. i have the session ids blocked that way too.

thanks again :)

No, I'm sorry but I don't have the time to offer individual coding changes that I would have to look up.

It looks like you have the wrong version installed since the stylesheet code in in the file, which it shouldn't be. What does the diagnostic say? have you tried the alternate file?

hi Jack,

Not sure if someone asked this already. I search for msn and bing without any result. My question is can I use the same xml to submit to bing or other search engines? Thanks as always
