There are so many great features missing from osCommerce. I would like to develop an osCommerce with all the right contributions. Please take a look at my list and let me know what you think. I need experiences and advice:

Well, there are other osCommerce "forks" out there already that are nothing more than "bloated" versions of the original. I don't use them because they do not incorporate the Simple Template System, the number one needed feature in my opinion. They have changed the original code so much that it would be a nightmare trying to get them to work together.

Most people on these forums have "created" their own version of osCommerce just by adding the contributions they need one at a time. When it's all said and done, it looks very different from the original. Which is not a bad thing, but does make things difficult once a "new" "must have" contribution shows up and the developer does not include manual installation instructions. Ouch!

Anyway, I'm all for anyone wanting to create a "super oscommerce" with STS part of the system.

I agree, STS Template rocks!

I've tried other forks, like zen-cart and cre-loaded and the same 2 problems arise:

1.) open source community much larger and helpful with osCommerce

2.) there is just about a contribution for anything on osC. almost impossible to build onto the forks

This is way I always come back to osC. Now i was thinking of just waiting for MS3 to come out, but I figure the last version of MS2 is much stablier than the first version of MS3. And will probably be so for the next year or so. Let me know if anyone wants to join on building this SUPER osCommerce and I will set them on my CVS repository. We can all work on the same osCommerce, each with a contribution at hand. I've started with the B2B Suite as a base of the osC. You can PM or post here.

I haven't used STS, and probably never will, but isn't there many problems with a lot of contributions because of how much it changes everything?

Anyway, I noticed that you had listed both Unsold Carts Report AND Recover Cart Sales. My impression is that you do not use both. You pick one or the other, and Recover Cart Sales is MUCH better than Unsold Carts Reports.

You also have to pay for ActionBlox, so that isn't going to be an option.

You are likely going to have problems with the shop being bloated though, if you are wanting to create your own sort of 'fork' of Oscommerce. The best option would be to have the abilities to turn certain features on and off in the admin so that unwanted features aren't used.

Anyway, there is my 2cents. Hope it helps.

Cheers,

Chris :)

TinyMCE is a better editer if you ask me. : )

Define Content is also a great contribution to use and I put it in all of my stores. I used to use the extra infopages contributions and those are good if you will need lots of extra pages but most people don't.

Personally I hate the template systems and will never use them, half of the contributions I use are a pain in the butt to install when you use templates.

If you are going to use PayPal I would suggest the osCommerce paypal IPN module.

Purchase without account is good, css buttons everywhere, infobox customizer and lots of other good ones for editing the layout... heck I could go on and on and never list one of the contributions you put up although I do use some of them. There are just so many contributions and each person I do sites for usually has different wants or needs and don't want to bother with sites that have tons of stuff they will never use.

I was not supporting a fork. I was suggesting contributions for someone to put in their store.

I have a store I call my "superstore"... doesn't automattically mean someone wants to create a fork.

I do not and will never support forks and refuse to work on them : )
