I assume with a regular account the payment amount is credited to the PayPal account and an email is sent to the email address set up on the PayPal Payment module in OSC. If someone purchases something from you using paypal the very last step of the proccess is clicking a continue button. When this button is clicked it sends info back to oscart about the sale details. If the customer doesnt click continue the sale is complete but the information never gets returned to oscommerce. But if you have IPN then the IPN feature will make sure the sale details get returned to oscommerce In otherwords if you dont have IPN and the customer doesnt click continue then oscommerce never knows if the sale completes. I would also imagine IPN will play a role in the up coming release of the affiliate program module.
