How to install SSL on OSC: A Simple 1-2-3 Instruction

Guys,

please forgive me my ignorance on this subject. I read thru the entire post and it seems to be straightforward. Although I can find my way in webdesign, I am new to the world of E-commerce and more in particular to this topic of payment modules. The shop (that I am developing for someone) is approaching it's final stage, but I am not sure what to do about those certificates everyone is talking about. The shop is located in Belgium and the shopowner would like to allow payments solely thru paypal and mastercard/visa. I believe having read that he has to request an account with paypal to be able to activate the module. But then how are we to proceed with companies like visa and mastercard.

I also found on the paypal site they are processing payments via amex, visa etc thru their own site. Has anyone experience with this?

 

Again, this entire topic is quite new to me and I would like to get it right from the start, so any help/further explanation on how to proceed is more than welcome.

You'll need SSL to still protect customers when they fill out *any* information that is to be sent through the internet. It also gives customers a sense of security when they see that padlock in your browser, and perhaps a certificate seal on your website.

 

Regarding payment, you're referring to PayPal Website Payments pro, and although I'm not a big fan of Ebay/PayPal, many people use it because of the fact that there are no upfront fees, and yes, they accept CC payments after installing that module.

 

But you'll still need to get a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) for your website, and you can get reliable ones for as little as $15 USD.

Hi Jason, I've been reading your thread on ssl in trying to resolve my issues. I've seen how helpfull you've been, perhaps you could see from a quick look why my flash header or backround images aren't showing when ssl pages are viewed in Explorer.

I've changed all the http links to https in header file and tryed all the methods detailed by you here (as far as i know).

Hi ... great thread! I actually am not sure if this is a configuration question or not. Our shop is set up fine but there is one lingering bug in IE6 only that won't go away. It's on the login.php.

 

After a customer signs in (successfully) there is a warning from IE that says "Security Alert: You are about to be redirected to a connection that is not secure blah....."

 

Very alarming to customers! I don't get this in IE7, Firefox or Safari.

 

The redirect is set up to take you to your shopping cart page (not HTTPS) or to your account page if there is nothing in your cart (HTTP). Is that the link is expecting SSL for some reason?

I'm a little behind the curve here - I'm trying to decide which SSL provider to use. Mmy host (Siteground) offers a few options and I'm thinking of using the cheapest one http://www.siteground.com/order_ssl_standard.htm. Will this offer everything I need? I don't want to spend more than I have to, but I also don't want to order something that's not sufficient.

This is as simple as it gets -- how to install SSL, which is a mandate on every e-commerce site, easily and effectively on OSC:

 

(1) Inform your host. Tell your host you're going to install SSL through another company. They shouldn't charge you, but they might ... 10 bucks or whatever. They'll e-mail you a CSR (certificate signing request), which is really just a big clump of mumble-jumbled coding.

 

(2) Find an SSL Company. A popular one seems to be the RapidSSL by Geotrust, 'cause it's cheap, but there are plenty. Many people use Geotrust, Verisign, Networksolutions, GoDaddy, and others. A Simple Google Search can give you plenty of other options. Make sure it has at least 128-bit data encryption, and is compatible with all browsers. Make sure it has a trusted root. Make sure it puts a padlock in your browser. These are all questions you'll ask the SSL company.

 

(3) Purchase the SSL. E-mail the SSL company your CSR that your host gave to you. Be sure that both your host and the SSL company are on the same page -- assign your SSL to either http://www.yoursite.com, or http://yoursite.com -- but make sure the host and the SSL company are on the same page, and both do the same thing.

 

(4) Go back to your host. You'll receive an SSL Certificate Key from the SSL company once purchased. This will be more mumble-jumbled coding in your e-mail. E-mail the SSL Certificate Key back to your host. They'll install it for you.

 

(5) Alter your config files. All you need to do now is to alter your configure.php files. They're located in (path to catalog)/includes/configure.php, and (path to catalog)/admin/includes/configure.php. OSC is designed to protect the pages that require data encryption, and altering your config files will do this for you. These pages include login, create_account, checkout, etc,. and any other pages that require data-input by the end-user.

 

(6) In includes/configure.php, set the SSL to "true"; it should look something like this near the top, if you assigned the SSL to www.yoursite.com:

Tried it many times but come to log in I get a certificate error https://gold-world-travel.com/auto/login.php

Been working on it for 9 days now trying to get it to work. Same results as Zen cart.

Tried changing perrmissions with 02 and Zen cart this did not work.

Reinstalled 02 and zen cart several times now. I want this to work, With out the ssl its works great, I just do not know what I am doing wrong

to config.Using Msn 2003 frontpage, web design, and CR3 using vendio hosting. geo trust and its taking much of my time.

Was hopping to install for xmas sales but looks more likley to be in jan 2008.

I am having the same problem but I also cannot get the secure parts of my shopping cart to come up either. My settings look the same as yours. I also have my admin section password protected. Did you have the problem with your shopping cart sections also?

I removed the S from the HTTP_server and HTTP_catalog

My problem was the admin folder was secured already by the host, I think SSL got messed up on the admin site. I removed the SSL for the admin as shown above and everything is fine.

Hi, I have added a dedicated SSL cert and have followed Jase's insturctions on changing both of the config file, but my admin panel still says 'you are not protected by a secure SSL connection'.

How do I change this so it appears corrcetly please?

I have a problem with my SSL setup, after having tried all sorts of variations and combinations based on what I read in this thread and others. Here's my details:

 

The store is on http://store.japan-zone.com, which is also the domain for the installed SSL cert. This subdomain is mapped to the OSC file subdirectory, http://www.japan-zone.com/catalog/. The store itself is working fine but when I try to access any secure pages, I get a 404 Not Found error. I've tried changing the http to https in the admin config file, with no luck. Any suggestions or observations would be most welcome.

A quick update. My hosting service (Pair) wrote back to me to say:

 

In order to resolve this problem, I have linked your secure web folder to your nonsecure one. This way, all of the files are only needed in one location. This is how osCommerce is configured by default.

 

I wasn't even aware that this was an issue. Anyway, now on secure pages I get a 500 Internal Server Error instead of the 404 Not Found. I have to play with the config files to see if I can resolve the problem, but I thought the above might be helpful/informative for some.

I seem to be talking to myself here, but at least I finally found the answer. The problem was being caused by a couple of lines in my .htaccess file. They related to php/cgiwrap and hadn't caused any problems before. I removed the two lines and, hey presto, everything now seems to be working fine.

 

The moral of the tale seems to be that if you're getting mysterious 500 Internal Server Errors after installing SSL, look to your .htaccess file(s).

Hey guys. For someone here that uses RapidSSL, can you plese let me know if you run into any problems such as "There is a problem with this website's security certificate."? Or if I could view your site to see how the RapidSSL works that would be great.

 

I want to purchase a SSL certificate but I dont want to get one that isnt easily recognizable.

 

And I know by reading here that the bigger ones, such as GeoTrush and Verisign are more recognizable but I cant afford the high dollar cost right now.

I have tried all the sets you suggested, read all comments by others and also tried changing the sets around, but none of them worked.

When I try to login as a client, if I use a wrong PW it will return the proper error message, but with the right PW it goes blank.

I also changed the date to DD/MM/YYYY as we use in Brazil, but when I try to create accounts it return me an error message saying to enter the date as DD/MM/YYYY just as I had done and I can not move on.

i've tried to follow the (very good) guide on here to setup my SSL but it still seems that my connection is partially unencrypted on all the relevant pages (create account, login etc..)

 

i thought it might have been the external http links in my footer but its stilled partially unencrypted if i remove them

 

how can i still use scripts like google translate and amazon store-in-store? as they don't seem to work as https

 

any help much appreciated
