adrian.pearce
Sorry I wish I could help you. OK Thanks for the reply. I have now managed to sort it out, it is in the database tables under product description. You look for the column products viewed and change the number to '0'. grant101
hi, Being new to oscommerse and website building.. I liked your site, it isn't 'very busy' and over powering.. nice colours and easy to navigate around (which i like in a site) I clicked a couple of 'click here for larger image' thumbnails and they didn't work.. Wheres your SSL.. and yes loos the 'views so far' bit at the bottom. I think overall it looks very professional and a good base for a great site. regards Grant. Thanks Grant for your comments, i still have a few alterations to make but all in all i am quite pleased with it. I have spent alot of time editing the pages and trying to get them to look good. I have no SSL on the site because my customer doesn't use the online system yet. Well she doesn't have a computer, so i am trying to talk her into it. At the moment customers can print off the order and phone or send it through. I know not a very good idea for an online shop but this is what she wants. I will prove to her that it needs to be changed. Thanks again. Adrian...

Wendy James
Adrian just so you know posting over and over again to "bump" your post is against forum rules. In answer to your question "how to remove the counter" Open /includes/footer.php and change require(DIR_WS_INCLUDES . 'counter.php'); to // require(DIR_WS_INCLUDES . 'counter.php'); then remove <?php echo $counter_now . ' ' . FOOTER_TEXT_REQUESTS_SINCE . ' ' . $counter_startdate_formatted; ?> that leaves the date. If you want to get rid of the date and the counter just remove <table border="0" width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="1"> <tr class="footer"> <td class="footer"> <?php echo strftime(DATE_FORMAT_LONG); ?> </td> <td align="right" class="footer"> <?php echo $counter_now . ' ' . FOOTER_TEXT_REQUESTS_SINCE . ' ' . $counter_startdate_formatted; ?> </td> </tr> </table> <br> Wendy James Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. radders
I found that my site description on google was coming from my listing in Google Directory which is a copy of The Open Directory - dmoz.org. That may help. I see you have several versions of the site linked from your homepage (an asp and an osc one). Once you switch to just one version it should improve. Thanks for your reply, i have never been very good at optimising a website, but i have been keeping a close look at this one. I don't seem to get a very good ranking in google using my keywords and the only traffic i seem to get is from this forum. Sorry i am not trying to keep reposting this but i am trying to get this site some paying customers and are struggling to do this. I am hoping that someone can come up with some good ideas on how i can achieve this.

K3D
Just a couple of points that have not been mentioned. Your credit card images at the bottom of the page links to the oscommerce.com website. A user would most likely think that any link there would be about payment information, not a website about an ecommerce solution. All your product images of jackets are all squashed and look like they are designed for short, podgy people. I think if memory serves me correctly that you should set a height for the images in admin but not a max width, this forces them to maintain aspect ratio. If you are trying to get your html front page up in rankings, you would be best advised to use some H1 and H2 tags on important keywords. I would be more concerned with page content for natural ranking in search engines than your metatag information. As for your meta tags, I think your description is a bit too keyword biased and a bit too long in length. Your keywords would perhaps be better used on the product pages they relate to, along with the titles. (I am no expert though, but I would pick two or three prime keywords / phrases and target them on my front page)

Also changed the sizes of the images being displayed which looks much beter now. This site is gradually improving on rankings but i am still not seeing any orders coming through, not sure why? xtreeq
There are a few things that bother me: 1. In the categories box, I uderstand that the "->" means "this has sub-categories" but I think you should find something better then this. 2. In the Specials box it says right now on my screen that: "If you spend over ?250.00 ?0.00 ?0.00" What does this mean? 3. You need to add a site-map for the search engine cralwers. 4. I would add a range of links at the bottom of the page (see me site www.artdealer.co.il). 5. Your site is huge, and it takes 1.12 seconds to load ot on a T1 1.44Mbps. Use this link to check your loading time: http://www.websiteoptimization.com/service...lyze/index.html 6. Where do I log in/register? I don't want to look for It, It should be vary visiable. 7. Remember that many people don't like to register since it takes a long time, offer the option to subscribe to news from the site, and ask for an email and name. That's it for now. Hope that helped a bit. You can reach me for more questions at: [email protected] Bye bye now

andy39surf
I really like your site and the overall design is fine. The one area that really lets it down is your product images. People really do like to see what they are buying. The enlarged views of the images need to be much larger and clearer. It's a shame as you have obviously spent a lot of time on the site, but completely lost track of what your potential customers want to see, and that of course is the product. I wouldn't buy on that basis alone. Re search engine rankings, it's a big subject and not as easy as stuffing a few meta tags with keywords, though that to an extent is part of it. Have you done your keyword research to find what people are actually searching for. If not use the Overture UK search suggestion tool Regarding more visitors you will need lots of inbound links. All SE's particularly Google rank a page on two main factors, one is the actual content of the page ( aka on-page optimisation ) and also the no of inbound links a site has and the quality and relevance of those links. So if several sites score evenly for on-page factors it is links that are used to differentiate. If you apply yourself to a link building campaign as well as you have to the site so far, I'm sure in time you will succeed. It's good to see that someone has taken the time customise a site. The other problem area seems to be your implementation of the shopping cart. I would suggest that online buyers could find that unprofessional as it stands. Why not tell them they need to ring to place an order and emphasise the personal touch as a selling point, losing the cart altogether for now. Another thing you could consider is a pay per click campaign. I would start with Yahoo (Overture) as you can see what your competitors are paying unlike Google which is more of a Dutch auction. To give you two examples from your keywords only 35 people a month are searching the Oveture/Yahoo network for "all weather clothing" and there are no keyword bids, whereas "camouflage clothing" has 531 searches a month and you would need to bid more than ?0.20p for the top spot or ?0.13p for 2nd place. So for a fiver a day you could have 38 qualified hits per day in 2nd spot. Bid tool and keyword tool can be found together here. Bid tool and keyword tool. In the meantime apply yourself to learning more about image editing and natural search engine optimisation. Hope all that is helpful. I am currently going through the pain of producing what I hope will be a seriously modified OSCommerce site and will post here in a few months time to be criticised by all and sundry. Keep it up. PS One final thought, your homepage could cause you problems. It could be considered by the search engines as a "doorway page" which is against all the SE's terms of use. It essentially is a page that is in place purely for the for the benefit of search engines and they don't like them. You will probably be fine for now, but if you start to get noticed by a competitor and they decide to send a spam report the engines, you could be penalised. Thank you for all the advice and taking the time to look at my first shop. Your points i will look at closely and check out the best path i should take. It is always good to get comments about your work even though some of them you need to take with a pinch of salt. Your points are valid and i will look into the improvements. I did think about removing the first page, so if i did how would i move my shop from: http://www.rutlandsofoakham.co.uk/shop/index.php to http://www.rutlandsofoakham.co.uk without deleting the database, because i have aleady done this before and had to re-enter all the products again. I must admit it looked better once i had done this. Can anyone help?
