I have followed the install instructions but when I try to get to www.yoursite.com/catalog/install i get the http 404 error screen like this:

http://tradingpostct.net/catalog/install/

Why won't it go to the next install page?

Thanks,

Billyoursite/catalog/install link doesn't work

I'm posting this here so that people who need to can find a quick Installation Guide for osCommerce. It goes a bit further than the Installation Guide in the Knowledge Base.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's the quick install guide.

1. Create a blank database via your web hosting control panel.

2. Download the osCommerce 2.2 MS2 zip file from the downloads section of www.oscommerce.com, unzip it and extract the 'catalog' folder.

3. If you want your shop to be available at http://www.yourdomain.com/catalog then upload the whole of the catalog folder to the root directory of your website via FTP. If you want the site to be available at http://www.yourdomain.com then just upload all of the contents of the catalog folder, but not the folder itself.

4. Make sure that the permissions on all of the folders are set to 755, and if that does not work then set them to 777. Make sure that the includes/configure.php file and the admin/includes/configure.php file are set to 777 for the duration of the install. Once the install is complete reset to 644, 444, or 400 depending on your server setup.

5. Then go to http://www.yourdomain.com/install and begin the install procedure. Your DB Server will probably be 'localhost', your db user name and password (for mysql access) will have been provided to you by your web hosting company. The name of the database you already know - because you just set it up. Do not enable SSL, elect to store sessions in the database and not files (untick the box), and do not enable persistent connections.

6. After the install create a folder called 'backups' inside the 'admin' folder (via FTP), and delete the install folder. Reset permissions on the two configure.php files.

7. Password Protect your 'admin' folder using the Password Protect feature in your web hosting control panel.

Away you go!

Hello,

I'm trying to isntall OSC , but I'm getting the eror.

A test connection made to the database was NOT successful.

The error message returned is:

Table 'baldinis_osc.configuration' doesn't exist

Please click on the Back button below to review your database server settings.

If you require help with your database server settings, please consult your hosting company.

Then I try to upload database through PHP My Admin, I'm getting this eror

#1064 - You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1' at line 17

Who can help for me?

It seems that all the setups are Create a blank database via your web hosting control panel.

Well suppose you don't have a web hosting control panel to open? I have searched the web over a thousands time and find no help for someone that has their own server, ip and does their own hosting.

Just keep in mind that you will be talking to a (not so smart but could use a shopping cart guy)

Thanks Bo

Now that isn't very nice Viger. I didn't say I was dumb, Just never have done any of this before.

I am a retired school teacher and my IQ is above normal. Can you repair a car? No, well then does that make you dummer than the mechanic? LOL!!!!

This suppot thread can only fulfill one function - assisting people with the basic install of osCommerce.

It cannot branch out into telling people what they need to do to self-manage their own server.

There are specialist forums for self-managing servers.

Thanks viger , I can manage it and have for a while, I just have never needed to use PHP, Mysql or a shopping cart.

Hi,

I have been trying to install OsCommerce for a couple of days now - I go through all the steps you outlined, and end up at the "Finished! The installation and configuration was successful!" but when I click on the catalog or admin buttons, all I get is a blank white screen saying "Unable to connect to database server!"

I have tried setting the config files to 755, 777, 644, 444 and 400 but I still get the same result :s

Any help you could give me would be much appreciated! :D

The install did not complete successfully. In particular it is unlikely that the configure.php files were written to, and that is why you are getting the db error.

Drop the tables in the database via phpMyAdmin, and then run the install again.

Sorry to be a pain, but I'm new to databases and I'm not sure what you mean! - do you mean there is a certain table file that needs deleting? when I look inside my database folder, I see another folder titled "my admin" and inside that there are a few folders as well as a long list of files. The files that have anything to do with 'tables' are:

tbl_addfield.php

tbl_alter.php

tbl_change.php

tbl_create.php

tbl_indexes.php

tbl_move_copy.php

tbl_printview.php

tbl_properties.inc.php

tbl_properties.php

tbl_properties_common.php

tbl_properties_export.php

tbl_properties_links.php

tbl_properties_operations.php

tbl_properties_structure.php

tbl_properties_table_info.php

tbl_query_box.php

tbl_relation.php

tbl_rename.php

tbl_replace.php

tbl_replace_fields.php

tbl_row_action.php

tbl_select.php

Do you mean one of these needs to go?

Thanks for the help so far :)

Those tables are for the operation of phpMyAdmin, and nothing to do with osCommerce.

If you followed the Quick Install Guide then you would have created a blank database ready for use during the osCommerce install procedure. If you did create a blank database for use with osCommerce then you need to drop all 46 tables in it and run the install again.

If you didn't create a blank database then you need to go back to Page 1 of this thread, read the Quick Install Guide (all of it), and start again.

i'm trying to install osCommerce, I am up to point 5 - enter your DB server details.

well I've entered my details numerous times yet I'm getting an error stating access is denied.

I'm new to this, and not sure why it's not letting me go to the next step.

for example

my DB Server is local host

my user name is admin

my password is Password1

my database name is NatOrd

yet I get "Access denied for user 'admin'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

??

With some hosting control panels e.g. cPanel and Plesk, when you have created a MySQL User Name and Password you then have to link them to the blank database you created.

I've added multiple users and linked them all to the database, but still getting the same error.

The only thing I can think of is that you've used a mix of upper and lower case letters for the db e.g. NatOrd

Please make sure the database is created only with lower case letters e.g. natord

and make sure that 'local host' is spelled 'localhost'

i've tried that again, deleted all users and databases.

server: localhost

username: admin

password: ######

database name: natorg

There was a problem connecting to the database server. The following error had occured:

Access denied for user 'admin'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

Please verify the connection parameters and try again.

Just to clarify, i'm using the database username and password (not my web hosting username and password)
