Quick Install Guide

Vger

Recommended Posts

I'm posting this here so that people who need to can find a quick Installation Guide for osCommerce. It goes a bit further than the Installation Guide in the Knowledge Base.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's the quick install guide.

1. Create a blank database via your web hosting control panel.

2. Download the osCommerce 2.2 MS2 zip file from the downloads section of www.oscommerce.com, unzip it and extract the 'catalog' folder.

3. If you want your shop to be available at http://www.yourdomain.com/catalog then upload the whole of the catalog folder to the root directory of your website via FTP. If you want the site to be available at http://www.yourdomain.com then just upload all of the contents of the catalog folder, but not the folder itself.

4. Make sure that the permissions on all of the folders are set to 755, and if that does not work then set them to 777. Make sure that the includes/configure.php file and the admin/includes/configure.php file are set to 777 for the duration of the install. Once the install is complete reset to 644, 444, or 400 depending on your server setup.

5. Then go to http://www.yourdomain.com/install and begin the install procedure. Your DB Server will probably be 'localhost', your db user name and password (for mysql access) will have been provided to you by your web hosting company. The name of the database you already know - because you just set it up. Do not enable SSL, elect to store sessions in the database and not files (untick the box), and do not enable persistent connections.

6. After the install create a folder called 'backups' inside the 'admin' folder (via FTP), and delete the install folder. Reset permissions on the two configure.php files.

7. Password Protect your 'admin' folder using the Password Protect feature in your web hosting control panel.

Away you go!

Vger

I have closely followed your instructions but am unable to complete the installation - see my post here:

1. Create a blank database via your web hosting control panel.

- CHECK

2. Download the osCommerce 2.2 MS2 zip file from the downloads section of www.oscommerce.com, unzip it and extract the 'catalog' folder.

- Downloaded osCommerce 2.3.1.zip from http://www.oscommerce.com/solutions/downloads. 2.2 MS2 doesn't seem to be available. Is this why I am having problems?

3. If you want your shop to be available at http://www.yourdomain.com/catalog'>http://www.yourdomain.com/catalog then upload the whole of the catalog folder to the root directory of your website via FTP. If you want the site to be available at http://www.yourdomain.com then just upload all of the contents of the catalog folder, but not the folder itself.

- Installed into catalog folder on the root directory.

- CHECK

- CHECK (apart from SSL and sessions which did not appear)

6. After the install create a folder called 'backups' inside the 'admin' folder (via FTP), and delete the install folder. Reset permissions on the two configure.php files.

- Backups folder already present. Deleted install folder. Permissions were already reset to original 644.

OK, install complete message appears - now I want to '4 - Review the directory permissions on the Administration Tool -> Tools -> Security Directory Permissions page.' as shown in the post-installation steps. I click on the Administration Tool button and get the following error message:

***********************

Warning: require(includes/languages/.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /misc/33/000/029/366/4/user/web/tournamentheaven.com/catalog/thcatalogadmin/includes/application_top.php on line 167

***********************

I have tried to comment out this section but further warnings and fatal error messages appear. What am I doing wrong?

Lastly

7. Password Protect your 'admin' folder using the Password Protect feature in your web hosting control panel.

- I've never done this before, does anyone have any advice on how to do this?!

Many thanks!

Al

I have tried to install numerous times but the same error message. I have even downloaded the installation again to rule that out... has anyone come across this error before? I would really appreciate anyone's help in this.

Hi

I am having trouble with reseting the permissions, I can set them to 644 but I still get an error message : Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file: /includes/configure.php

Have tried 444 and 400 but it will not allow this settings.

Try 440.

Did you change the permissions using your hosts control panel? If so call their help desk.

Remember with some hosts you can not change permissions using ftp clients such as dute ftp or filezilla.

Hi Vyger,

Now using XAMPP as suggested - got a little further this time.

Now able to get installed on a local machine - still getting errors, however.

See below:

Warning: session_start(): open(/tmp\sess_a107a1e1f4976478288304e93e4f51a7, O_RDWR) failed: No such file or directory (2) in D:\XAMPP\xampp\htdocs\catalog\includes\functions\sessions.php on line 67

Warning Warning: The sessions directory does not exist: /tmp. Sessions will not work until this directory is created.

You can also delete duplicate files to optimize.

Yep - OK - where exactly should this tmp directory be created?

Other errors:

Warning: session_write_close(): open(/tmp\sess_a107a1e1f4976478288304e93e4f51a7, O_RDWR) failed: No such file or directory (2) in D:\XAMPP\xampp\htdocs\catalog\includes\functions\sessions.php on line 106

Warning: session_write_close(): Failed to write session data (files). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct (/tmp) in D:\XAMPP\xampp\htdocs\catalog\includes\functions\sessions.php on line 106

Hi Vger,

I am trying to install the osCommerce 2.2 template that I've purchased on a WAMP server on my local machine first before finding a hosting company to host my online store. I am able to get to the osCommerce installation first page by typing the following(http://localhost/electronics/catalog/install) on the search engine bar. Then no matter what I do, the installation process will not get pass through the second page? I have imported all the sample data and have created a database using PhpMyAdmin tool of the WAMP server. Please HELP!! The WAMP server seems harder to use than the XAMPp? Please advise should I use the XAMPP instead?

Thanks and looking forward to hear from you soon.

Try doing the install with a stock copy of osCommerce 2.2RC2a. If that works, the problem is with your template. If the stock version doesn't install it's time to switch to XAMPP.

I have a problem. I already have an old "oscommerce" I thought I'd put up online, they can not put up the website. They told me that I should renew "oscommerce"

Have downloaded the latest thinking and install. but they can not.

I go into "www.youname.se / catalog / install" the works, but when I type in "Database Server" they are wrong, they do not approach

"There was a problem connecting to the database server. The Follo wing begged error occurred:

Access denied for user 'youname.se' @ 'srv183.one.com' (using password: NO) "

please can somebody help me?

Go to http://www.apachefriends.org/en and download XAMPP to your computer. It's a 1-click install, and includes all you need, Apache server, PHP 4 and 5, Open SSL, Mail Server, FileZilla etc.

Once you've done the XAMPP installation then you can use the Quick Install Guide to get your local testing site up and running.

Be aware that XAMPP uses php5 by default, but comes bundled with php4 also. Go to http://localhost and into your XAMPP control panel. Then click on the XAMPP icon to shut down Apache, click on the switch-php.bat link and enter 4 when the terminal window pops up. Then restart Apache using php4.

Hi Vger

when I used XAMPP thee browser tell me the following:

FATAL ERROR: register_globals is disabled in php.ini, please enable it!

I cheked many files called php, but they tell that I must enable the register_globals by the form. where is that form I should work with in the Xampp?

Hi Vger,

please be gentle with me, this is my first post!!

Thanks for the more in depth insight into installing oscommerce.

I am wanting to initially develop my shop on my PC before I upload it.

I am having difficulty setting up the database also.

I have used the search function in the forum, but without exact string match clauses, there are thousands of hits, which are extremely confusing and relate to stuff that I am lightyears away from.

I am using the Xmapp suite, and can see the database creation within phpmyadmin. How do I find out how many fields I need to creat, their types / attributes. Is it a flat or relational database?

Has someone got a blank database that I could use?

I really do seem to be spending many hours going round in circles and never getting anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Glyn :'(

Hello Glyn, did you ever manage to get your web site set up? because like you I'm new to this. I've uploaded OSCommerce but I've spent 2 days looking at it and don't know where to go. Do I select each catagory and then select Edit, to edit the OSCommerce catolouge? They said this was easy! erassmus

IT IS A VALUABLE RESOURCE - Please - update it - there are tons of brainy dudes (and dudesses?) out there - please help us!
