How to increase your spider traffic

Directories. This is a crucial piece of the linking campaign puzzle.

Anyone can submit their new website to the search engines and have their homepage crawled. However, how long does it take to do a deeper crawl? Typically it takes anywhere from 4-8 weeks before the spiders will return and start indexing deeper. How can a website owner decrease that time? The only way is to have inbound links.

How to get inbound links

The mantra of SEO specialists is to have quality content on your website and you will get natural linking. Basically, people linking to your site since they find it useful or a valuable resource. However, this is seldom the case with eCommerce stores since there is usually a pretty hefty amount of competition (unlesss the store sells very niche items). The next logic step is to get inbound links via directory submissions.

There are plenty of directory lists available. I would recommend submitting a website to every free directory that can be found. This is a no-cost method of obtaining backlinks. Be warned: if that "free" directory requires a link back to them then it is not truly free. If they demand a reciprocal link in exchange then move on...you don't need them.

Here is a great list of free directories: Free Directory List (SEO Friendly) at Vilesilencer.com. The requirements for getting on that list is that the directory has to be truly free. They must NOT require a reciprocal link and must actually review their sites in a timely manner. Probably one of the best free directory lists available online.

It should be noted that it is imperative that you categorize your submission correctly. If it does not belong in the category that you submit to it will almost always mean rejection.

CATEGORIZE YOUR SUBMISSION CORRECTLY! The easier you make it on an editor the better chance it will be accepted immediately.

Excellent advice.

I spent several hours yesterday getting registered on as many free sites as I could find. I used the links provided by Chemo in his "SEO Manual - Basic Info" contrib. My search engine saturation (number of links back to me) went up by 20% today. Now only a few of the 30 or so sites I registered with have linked me so I expect when the others do this will be a significant increase in my sites web presence. I'll be registering on as many free sites as I can find from now on. I'll be checking that Vilesilencer link next, thanks

Hi Bobby,

Thank you for sharing this information, I think its wonderful! I have one question though and that is how are these directories different from link farms? Perhaps I do not fully understand how to spot a link farm.

Be well,

Tina,

A link farm is a site that links to OTHER websites in an attempt to artificially inflate their own link popularity. Think of this like the typical "links page" on steroids.

A directory links to other websites in an attempt to categorize the their resources in a logic and themed manner. For example, all links on a "honey" page will point to honey related categories or websites. Hence, those listings are not considered a link farm since all resources listed are somehow related.

As a comparison, a "honey" page on a link farm would point to sites who's main content is lingerie, video games, or other non-related sites. If you've ever come across a sales pitch to instantly increase your backlink count by "X" number of links if you host "X" number of links yourself that is a link farm scheme.

Thank you for the explaination Bobby. Would this apply to a site that had say 20 to 30 links on a links page to other sites? Should these links be categorized to avoid penalties?

I believe it does apply. Let me give you an example:

I have a website that is currently a PR5 on the homepage. However, all of my internal pages are a PR6. Why would the homepage have a LOWER page rank than the rest?? Because somewhere along the way I made a bad decision with linking stategies and exchanged links with a "bad neighbor". This penalized their link to my site (instead of add page rank it SUBTRACTED) and also the page that links to them was penalized. I know the links page was penalized since all of my pages are a PR6 while it has stayed a PR4 even though it is right next to the other internal links in a nav list.

So, once I realized that my main site was going to be penalized and that the page being used for the reciprocal links was to be penalized as well I decided to implement a directory for organizing the links. In this case each was on a relevant page and would not be considered a link farm. To date the directory has retained a PR6 and has not been penalized.

I leave my original links file on the server as a reminder that bad linking strategies will hurt me in the long run.

So, given my above real world example I feel that even a 20 or 30 links page where the listings are not relevant would serve absolutely no purpose. Further, I feel that it may actually cause more damage that is understood by a person that has not experienced it firsthand. I shared the true story above (you can search my sites and verify what I'm telling you) so that you can learn from my mistakes. Educate yourself and you will have that much more power over the destiny of your web enterprise. Even almost 1.5 years later my homepage has not fully recovered...learn my lesson well and save yourself the heartache.

Hi Chemo,

Thanks for your information you have placed here. I Am happy to read, that other people have the same problems as I have. I run a wine shop called www.winediscount.ch with which I am happy with search engines. Based on the experience of that shop, I thought to build my new shop also with OSCOMMERCE. A friend of mine changed the design of the shop and put in some contribs and some wine business specialties. But since we have started that shop before Christmas, it is not well ranked in Google and other search engines.

Do you have any idea whats wrong with it? I am really at the end of my knowledge. I will follow you idea about inbound links, but I am interested in your opinion. Why are the spiders not able to deep crawl? Is it the structure of the page?

Oh by the way, the site is www.vuithier.com, also reachable through www.finewine.ch or www.getraenkehaus.ch

I would be very, very grateful, if you could tell me your opinion.

Thanks in advance

Patrick

It's beyond the scope of a single thread to diagnose and recommend changes for search engine optimization purposes. However, if you have 3 domains all pointing to the same content I would choose the one that has the relevant keywords to market. Having keywords in the domain is very important!

swisspad: You have made a very simple mistake. It appears you have 3 sites that are duplicate or very simular copy. You are more than likely under a penalty. You need pick one main domain and then 301 the other 2 domains into that one. That means if you type on www.domain1.com or www.domain2.com they will take you to www.domain3.com.

Your hosting company can help you with this.

The search engines try to filter out all duplicate data so when you have 3 sites that are the very same you get filtered out right away.

On Yahoo you may be under a ban for this site.

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=linkdomai...etraenkehaus.ch

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=site%3Awww.getraenkehaus.ch

A penalty for this site.

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=site%3Awww.finewine.ch

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=linkdomai...www.finewine.ch

Not sure with his site.

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=linkdomai...ww.vuithier.com

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=site%3Awww.vuithier.com

My DSL is acting up and your sites load so slow I am not able to do much more for you at this time.

You can contact me at [email protected] or PM here if you like and I will see what I can do for you.
