3 months of hard work, and this is what I get!

Hi all,

It's been a hard slog but I've now just made my store live:

www.networkwebcams.com

I'd really appreciate any feedback on it.

As you can see I've made a LOT of modifications to the store, and I've used a few contribs as well. I can provide a list of contribs used if anyone's interested.

Anyway, feedback most welcome!

you should reword your privacy statement.

this is the first bullet:

Information you give us: We receive and store any information you enter on our website or give us in any other way.

then, in your fourth bullet:

We DO NOT store your credit card details in this site, in our databases or anywhere in our system.

then you have an empty about page.

this:

At no time will we ever provide your account contact or payment information to any third party vendor, associate or service provider unless absolutely necessary, and only in order to complete your transaction and order.

why not word it right that you have to provide payment info to your merchant account, this way you are upfront with where the CC info is going.

then you have it repeated again about the credit card not being stored but passed to the merchant account.

you should really print out each page in the info box and then compare them with one another and see where duplicates are, etc.

Very nice site

I dont think you need the "NetworkWebcams.com - security cameras, network video products, wireless webcams and digital IP networking" at the very top of your header, its in a light grey font with a white background. Hard to read and something you could put elsewhere.

Maybe make your header tabs a bit more of a grey colour to go with the rest of your site and also the line under the tabs. Did you use a contribution for the tabs or is it your own?

Why do i get a security warning when using the search function? You may want to change the search function as it is not searching the product description and only the product name... use advanced search?

I like the way you have done the list all products, but not sure if this is of great importance.

Not much else i can say, but looks superb and a top job you have done!

Nice site

Good job ;)

One note: I think you have a huge header (you have two, in fact) that occupy a lot of precious space, a part of it is blank... I think you should organize the top better.

The top menu (home, your account...) is a contrib? Wish one?

Good luck!

To virose: yes, you're right it is a lot of wasted space. I will try to improve this. The top menu isn't a contrib it's just done using CSS (help yourself to the code and the stylesheet) for quick loading and easy amendments. I intend to CSS-up the whole site if it works out! Out-of-the-box oscommerce is table-heavy and difficult to manage from a layout perspective. I didn't like the template contributions much so decided to slog it out and make all the changes myself!

Thanks Mighty Mike! some good info there and I'll make the amendments tomorrow. Not sure why you get a security warning from the search, but I do need to have the search look through descriptions by default. We've put a lot of work into product descriptions and so that makes perfect sense, thanks. The text right at the top is really for the benefit of search engines. We've used this technique before to great effect, provided it's relevant and not hidden...

Thanks Mibble... You've been a help before, and didn't disappoint this time :P

Guys, this was great feedback and goes some way to validating all the hard work I've put in making it happen. All we need are some sales now!

Thanks again...

Not a bad effort - Nice to see someone being a bit adventurous with osc for a change.

Couple of points:

If I click on "your account" - I don't see the relevance of asking me if I have a password or not with the option buttons. Looks a bit too "busy"

If this is for unregistered users - you aleady have this option with "create account"

You still have the Note: Your "visitors cart" contents will be merged with your "members cart" contents once you have logged on. [More Info]

personally, I'd move this to the Info section, - the [more info] popup is still stock and looks cheesy (not your fault!)

If you are shipping within the UK only, I can't see the relevance of your "country" select combo in the account setup - are you expecting people from outside the UK to place orders for delivery to the UK? How are you going to validate their credit cards if so?

I'd also make your header tabs nowrap, bit that's your choice.

I also think your left and right columns are slightly too wide - you're losing valuable real estate!

Also, you are really using too much space for your headers - most of the time, the real "meat" is more than halfway down the screen!

I see you've removed those "continue" buttons from your info screens - I also hated those redirections from them back to the "default" page - however, you are forcing the user to click the browser's "back button" after viewing them if they want to go back to where they were. How about if they were in the middle of an order and clicked an info link. How would they get back there apart from clicking the "back" button?

Also, forcing a non registered user to create an account is a big no-no!

I also assume you'll have SSL installed at some point?

Also, there is a bug on your site, which is in the original osc.

From the homepage, click "your account", leave everything blank, click "sign in" - you get the usual error msg.

Then click "create account", then click the browser "back" button - you get a nasty page not found error.

Thanks FalseDawn... Some things I hadn't noticed there... Also, I can recreate the login error you mentioned, but only in Internet Explorer. It works fine in Firefox/Mozilla etc. IE doesn't seem to handle this well. In fact, It's not a server-generated 404, but a browser-generated one. Must look into this. Thanks for the heads up!

I posted a suggestion about how to fix this error on the "general support" forum somewhere - it will involve a fair bit of coding though, in all places it affects.

It is basically down to using POST vars like "action=process", and then the user hitting the "back" button. There are a few atricles on the internet about why this is a very bad idea.

Seems like the majority here are happy to just cut and splice and then throw their arms up when things go pear-shaped, and the fix looks too involved for the majority of people to be able to splice it into their code.

I live in Teesside.

The county of Cleveland no longer exists as Cleveland. I can only register by registering an incorrect address, if I then make a credit card payment the avs check would fail (if you use avs).

Yes, we do use AVS, and it would fail. A simple mod to the db has fixed this. Thanks for the heads up.
