Reworked site

Recommended Posts

Following various problems with my host, I decided to move elsewhere, and in doing so, thought I would take the opportunity just to throw together a new site before installing my old one like I was going to.

It isn't completely finished as I need to make rollovers for the top buttons etc and import my full product catalog...but just a quick comment on how it feels to use as it stands now would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ady.

Before anyone comments that they get a mysql_connect(): Too many connections error and can't view my site, I am aware :(

Apparently my host has took mysql offline until they sort out some problem with it??

It has come to our attention that in the most recent build of the control panel software, a bug has arisen, causing a problem with the LOAD DATA function in phpMyadmin.

The control panel uses its own version of php and environment variables - it is thought that this problem is only occurring on servers using Redhat Fedora Linux.

A fix is currently being looked into and we will notify you as soon as there is more information.

Sorry if anyone has gone to look only to find a white screen. Hopefully it should be back before too long (or it better be)

Everything is back up and running now.

I have kept it a very basic look as really all i will be using it for in the short term is an extension to ebay to enable me to accept credit cards through a checkout without using paypal..for those few users on ebay who refuse to use PP.

SSL ordered today so should be installed within a couple of days. Going to import rest of the products sometime this weekend.

Would you use this site if directed there from ebay to pay?

Totally nice site, I don't see anything wrong with what you have done. The only part I would consider changing is your "allow 28 days for shipping". You are competing with companies that will have it at the customers door the next day, 28 days is far too long.

Other than that it is a great site.

It is good!

So much easier to use than fighting your way through ebay listings! Whether or not your ebay customers will be happy with it probably depends on your implementing one of the ebay-related contributions for your checkout.

How did you convert all your images to this 3D rounded corner format?

Your site appears to be called 'oscommerce'. You should change that

Thanks for the comments.

I will change the 28 days thing..just put it in there to cover me incase I made a mistake with my stock levels. Usually we get the order out next day anyway.

I have been meaning to change the window title since day 1 but its one of those things you always put to last as more important things come up. But your right, I need to change that now the rest of the site is nearly completed.

We use Auctionblox for our ebay management and checkout etc, so our ebay customers get the full checkout service right from pressing a button in the ebay listing.

The 3d images are created with Media Rezier Pro ($79 but I feel worth it for the effect you get with it) Mediaresizer

Thanks again guys

Nice site Ady, fairly standard layout, but you've made the theme of the site nicely.

I notice the best sellers scroller works in IE only, that's a pity. Is that a contribution or something you hacked up yourself?

Saw your name Burt and wasn't sure whether I wanted to read the comments lol

Yeah, it is a fairly standard layout, but the layout works well with most sites I have seen, and in the time I have spare to do the site, it was the best option speed wise just to leave it that way. Maybe at a later date when I get chance I might look at changing it to a more non standard layout..see whether it gets used enough first tho to justify more development.

BS scroller was just a contrib I installed. I wasn't going to have it on there, but I needed more boxes in the column, and that seemed like the best thing to have in there. Like you say, it's a pity it doesn't work as a scroller in anything other than IE, so when I get chance I might not display it for non IE users and have something in its place. (as to what , I haven't a clue lol)

:D I'm not awful all of the time. And it is Friday, which helps ;)

The scroller doesn't show in Firefox, what it does show is the normal osCommerce best sellers list. So it's already sorted.

I'd like to use the scroller on a site - you don't know which contrib it is do you? Cheers :)

Scroller contribution is here...

Best Sellers On Vertical Scroll

You can change a number inside the file to make it display all images for all 10 bestsellers (or how many you display) ...its currently set to display just the top 3 images and the rest as text. There's a file attached anyway to tell you how to control the speed etc.

Ady,

Cool use of modified product image listing previews! Gives the site a very custom, branded feel.

Have you considered changing the overall color theme? The colors are somewhat painful.

Love the use of scrolling bestsellers!

Good work on the modified column left and right to give it your own look.

Thx

When you say the colours are somewhat painful, which colours in particular? The pale yellow background? the box headings? the top panel of buttons? You say the overall colour theme so presumably none of the colours are to your taste?

Does everyone else think the colour scheme is off and needs alteration? Obviously not everyone likes the same as everyone else, so I would like to know if some people are ok with the colours, just so I can get a balanced view. If its a mixed reaction, then thats to be expected and I will just leave it as it is. If no one likes it then obviously I will need to rethink it.

Can this contrib be made to scroll horizontally ?

Similar to the one on http://alltsg.com/shop/ I am presuming that this is custom coded though.

I used to have exactly the same scroller on my previous site. Try the code below...save it as a separate file in your store root and then make a call for the file from whichever file you want it to appear in..

//Specify the slider's height

</html>

Then just amend the various web addresses to your site and and change the image paths to whatever.

I can't remember where I got the code from, so can't credit the author, but if you're reading and its yours, thanks.
