Product listing would look better like at www.spotontools.co.uk where they are listed 3 in a row...

small product images are horrible, get the 3 image sizes contribution r something. look on www.spotontools.co.uk again and you'll see the small images look just as good as the larger images...

the dhtml menu looks about 4px out of line to far down...

on product information page the description text is in the middle vertically, I think it would look better with a 10px padding to the table and aligned top left...

free games?? Surely this detracts from the shopping experience? Boots doesnt say go play at virgin while your shopping :P ... if I clicked on a game I would forget why I was at your store and probably close the window...

other than that I think it looks excellent... good points arent my thing, I like to hurt peoples feelings :P haha, not really. I just look bad.

That's great Pete I like people that don't mince their words!

I am definetely going to have a bash at the 3 image contribution because I totally agree that this is a weak area, however there are a few to choose from can you recommend the best one?

I like the way that you talk about spotontools like some sort of 3rd party and then it's in your signiture. Did like the look of your site and am taking notes.

On the point where you say the product information needs some padding around it, I wasn't sure what you meant, but then I checked out a couple that are on my front page that do look wrong. Fortunately their is only a couple that look like this on my site so should be easily fixed.

You said that the coolmenu was was out of alignment, it is spot on through my computer and have asked other people to check and they said the same. Is their anything that may cause this to be out of alignment when viewing through different browsers or something?

I'll have to say that I disagree with the the games section. I am trying to make our site a fun place to be and if I get a few more people bookmarking the site or spreading the word because they like the games we have choosen, then that can only be a good thing can't it?

Anyway, you have some excellant comments so thanks alot for the input!

Hello..er...Johnny Cage. Promise not to kick the crap out of me eh? :-)

I really think your site is above average as far as functionality goes (if not very good-excellent). The design is always the toughest part to master though since it truly takes quite a bit of your time.

I always dislike faniciful menus, but that is just me and not a statistics or the such. Yours is done very nicely though, and granted that you have implication inline that handle those without the ability to decipher the menus, it is excellent. :-)

I know you will think I am nitpicking here, but the images on the upper right of the page should possibly be all referenced to the link, rather than just the popcorn icon. Believe it or not, many people will roll over the text part and assume the link is not active. :-o

The whole design does not stand out to me. I would not remember it from one of the other thousands that look similar. Your colors are unique, and much of your implications are unique, but it is all layed out on the page in the same manner most other sites of this type are. Something as simple as the InfoBox Configuration Contribution might do the trick, allowing you to differentiate the right column boxes from the left in a whole separate design. Another possibility would be to make the main left column of boxes come just under your main popcorn logo. Then, have the rest of the page (main center and right box column) be set to the right of the left column. This makes the main navigation section stand out and will make a bold transition from the standard page design. Of course, this would also mean your first horizontal line (containing Home | Fun & Games | Mobile Fun) down to the right of the navigation column as well.

Another thing I dislike on electronics-based sites is actual framed boxes. I think it is because they remind me of all the other sites. Cookie cutters. Try the above contribution also to allow your main navigation site to stand out, but the other boxes to "blend" with the site, containing very light shaded borders or none. With a little (ok, I kid, alot) of work, and the box contribution, you could easily obtain Samsung's look. Not their site exactly, but the look they have.

The above contribution I speak of can be found here:

http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contri...1/search,custom

This contribution is very easy to install on osCommerce, and can easily be adapted to CRE Loaded 6 osC (why they didn't inlcude it is beyond me).

Again, I love the funcionality of your site, and the design is good, you have obviously put some work into it. The above statements are simply MY opinions and you should take them as such. :-)

The best of luck with your venture!

How does what work?

And what is cre 6?

Forgive me, but you are going to have to explain that whole sentence.

dakatone - thanks for your comments! Trying to move away from an oscommerce site is exactly what I want to do.

You are absolutely right about the top right links and am looking to fix this one first.

I have read the following again and again, and am not quite grasping what you are saying:

Another possibility would be to make the main left column of boxes come just under your main popcorn logo. Then, have the rest of the page (main center and right box column) be set to the right of the left column. This makes the main navigation section stand out and will make a bold transition from the standard page design. I will give the contribution you have suggested a try and maybe I will understand more when I have done that.

I want these sort of comments though so keep them coming, so far you and xpetex have given me some great ideas to work on and it has helped me to prioritse what others are seeing with fresh eyes.

the site looks good.

the banner loading up on each page takes long and gets a bit annoying after a while.

Thanks Jose! When you say banner is annoying do you mean popping banner on top left or the central banner?

So sorry about that.

It is confusing for me to try and explain visually what I mean on a website.

Try this:

Your site is evenly laid out now, if you wanted to try it, make the left hand column the main column, and EVERYTHING else but the top logo be "inside" that column, or just to the right of it. Drastically separates from the standard osC look.

Cre 6 is template-based and is 100% customizable with the box contribution. It isn't plug-and-play, so try working with it :-)

And Johnny, Cre 6 is a hosting company's version of osC with pretty much a major template overhaul and many goodies otherwise needed as contributions already in it. You can search for this on Google, but out of respect for osCommerce, I do not think I should post the link. Beware, if you decide on Cre 6, you will need to migrate...

I must say the website is a pretty decent adaptation of the default design. But, as previously mentioned, because the design represents the default osc layout you may not stand out so much from other websites.

Another thing...being really critical here...but your logo up the top left has a few blue and yellow specs on the white background which I don't think looks right. Would look much better if those pixels were cleaned up in my opinion.

One more thing, would you be able to put down a list of mods you used on the site? Also how did you get the products to be listed as 'icons' rather than a list on the product category pages?

I like it, but there is one thing that I would strongly suggest you consider: make the total width < 800. For those of us with a resolution set to 800x600 (like me at the moment) it is very annoying having to scroll horizontially (left to right) as well as vertically when trying to read.

I even gave up my lurker status by registering on the forums just to tell you this.

Have a nice day.

Thanks Paul, this is my most frustrating problem at the moment. I have been wanting to centre my shop for some time now but keep running into problems that stop me from doing so.

The problem at the moment is my coolmenu. You may or may not know that the coolmenu is set to a fixed position on the page sort of on top of the page you are looking at, which is fine for a non centered shop, as soon as you center it is out of place and if you strentch or compact the width of your screen the cool menu doesn't move with it.

Anyway I have found an addon to make the cool menu dynamic, which I have applied but it doesn't work, so I am waiting for the author to get back to me.

If anyone reading this has succesfully made their coolmenu dynamic and would like to offer assistance please feel free to pm me or post here.

I'm sure I will get to the bottom of this soon though.

This is the solution for making coolmenu dynamic:

First install the coolmenu contribution as described only don't insert the

require(DIR_WS_INCLUDES . 'coolmenu.php');

Then change the following files:

1: /catalog/includes/coolmenu.php

2: /catalog/includes/footer.php

3: /catalog/includes/boxes/coolmenu.php

1: in /catalog/includes/coolmenu.php

put this code after the <script> tag

//Extra code to find position:

function findPos(){

if(bw.ns4){ //Netscape 4

x = document.layers.tlayerm.pageX

y = document.layers.tlayerm.pageY

}else{ //other browsers

x=0; y=0; var el,temp

el = bw.ie4?document.all["topm"]:document.getElementById("topm");

if(el.offsetParent){

temp = el

while(temp.offsetParent){ //Looping parent elements to get the offset of them as well

temp=temp.offsetParent;

x+=temp.offsetLeft

y+=temp.offsetTop

}

}

x+=el.offsetLeft

y+=el.offsetTop

}

//Returning the x and y as an array

return [x,y]

}

oCMenu=new makeCM("oCMenu") //Making the menu object. Argument: menuname

pos = findPos()

//Menu properties

oCMenu.pxBetween=0

//experiment with fromleft and fromtop - I use -2 and -7 but you can try something different and place the menu anywhere on the page

oCMenu.fromLeft=pos[0]-2

oCMenu.fromTop=pos[1]-7

oCMenu.onresize="location.reload()"

oCMenu.rows=0

// etc.

2: in /catalog/includes/footer.php place

<!-- coolMenu //--><?php require(DIR_WS_INCLUDES . 'coolmenu.php'); ?><!-- coolMenu_eof //-->

at the very bottom

or else place the 'require coolmenu.php' in every single file under /catalog/ just befor the </body> tag (which takes a bit longer).

It must NOT EXIST ELSEWHERE in the php files under the catalog (root) directory.

If you have it after a </head> tag from an earlier installation then remove it from there.

3: in /catalog/includes/boxes/coolmenu.php

replace this code

$info_box_contents[] = array('text' => '<img src="images/trans.gif" width="150" height="' . $height . '">');

with this code

//the code below ajusts the height of the coolmenu dynamically according to the number of categories in the main menu

$result=tep_db_query("select parent_id from " . TABLE_CATEGORIES . " where parent_id = '0'");

$height.= A*mysql_num_rows($result)-A; //where A is the height of your oCMenu.level[0].height

//experiment with the multiplyer denpending on the size of your menu

$info_box_contents[] = array('text' => '<ilayer id="tlayerm"><div id="topm"><img src="images/trans.gif" width="'. BOX_WIDTH .'" height="' . $height . '"></div></ilayer>');

//BOX_WIDTH you set in .../includes/application_top.php

But like I say I have followed it to the tee and no luck so far.

  • 8 months later...

Haven't reposted in several months and have made lots of changes. Have dropped some contributions and added some. Have dropped some product lines and added some.

Would love to hear from anyone willing to comment good or bad.

I have taken on board all comments made and had to make lots of improvements. I'm sure there is still alot I can do.

A couple of things I would like to do but need advice on are:

1. Remove the OSbreadcrumb from the URL

2. Remove the catalog directory altogether
