At last I think I am ready for some comments. I was not looking to change all that much, but some colors and get rid of a few boxes, redo some graphics and Icons, and give it a kind of old news paper type fell without having to use a background graphic to slow down things. I have added some contributions, most of them are backbend stuff for the admin.

I know this is not the flash up to date look that most are going for, so please keep that in mind when you visit.

Thank you

Kel

I would like to say sorry to those who click on my link and get DNS error page. I am very upset that my server company sold out to another this past week and I was promised that my site would not be effected.....but it seems that this is not the truth. The real shame is I am paid up for another 6 months on my account.

Please don't give up on checking out my site because I really want to know what you all think and hear your ideas

It is up and running now.

You might want to do something with your infobox headers. I am guessing that you are using a transparent gif for the corners. If so you should use black or just edit them out . Otherwise from what I saw it looked pretty good . I would think about getting some form of SSL. If just for the customers Info makes Folks feel good when they are protected

Thank you for for your comments.

The headers have no transparent .gif's I want them to be like that. The images are really there just made to blend in.

I don't collect money on my site.....I direct to paypal so I don't need a SSL.

Hi Kel, indeed a different, but nice look.

Suggested improvements:

- Resize paypal box a little so the width is the same as for the other boxes in the righthand column.

- Given the centered box image on top, I'd put the shopping cart contents also in the top header area.

I was thinking about changing that paypal box, I just am going to give it a few days till this new server company stops messing around. I have had to redo the same changes 3 days in a row, and each morning I got up to the same site from the week before when they got it from the old server. But I will make sure to do it. And I will see how the shopping cart looks in the header. I am still thinking about some kind of top that would make it look like a news paper.

Thanks

I haven't had a chance to check out your site, but I just thought I'd share my opinion about the SSL that Terry was talking about. Even if you don't collect money, but you do collect customer information like address, phone number and email address... I'd want to be protected if I was signing up on your site....

the error

"Warning: mysql_connect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) in /home/kels2/public_html/includes/functions/database.php on line 19

Is my server messing around with my files. They are doing some kind of work to their server's sql so it makes this error. To say I am getting a bit upset is an understatement.

I am so sorry it was not their for you to view

As for the SSL thing, the only part that is not a matter of public record is the email address. My .com emaill is at much greater risk then that of any one who make an account.

But I will keep the SSL thing in mind.

If your server has one you can just share it. Check and see if they have one. If so all you need to do is make a couple of small changes in your configure files and you are set.

If you ever think about getting a stable server. The one I use is rock solid and is under $10 monthly. And have a 99% uptime . with SSl, If you wish to know more just PM me.

Plus they give you 3 Databases for that price.. So you can have a backup

Yes they have one, at least they list it in the cpanel. I emailed them about it and await a reply.

Still love that background of yours Terry

I got a SSL certificate and await my server company. RegisterFly.com has them right now for one year fee of $24.99 if anyone is looking for one that will not break the bank.

  • 3 weeks later...

While I am not a coder or graphic artist by any means, I do seem to do a decent job proof reading (future employment opportunity!?).

You can have the prettiest site on the net, but if you have articles and text with words spelled incorrectly and gramatical errors, potential customers will head for the door.

In the first ten seconds I was on your site, I began to read the article regarding Paypal and the change to that service.

"This is great news" says many business across the country."

"This is great news," stated many businesses (or business owners) across the country.

ALWAYS proof read before posting to a business website.

Aesthetics: I really like the absence of the top right corner graphics on your boxes. I think that looks nice and artistic. Paypal box on right menu definately needs to be resized to match the width of the other boxes though.

Thank you Dan for your corretion of my gramer, and here it is my spelling I worry about the most. (spell check is a heaven sent for dislexic me). And thank you for your comments about my boxes. As for that pay pal box...it seems to have a mind of it'. I have tried and tried to get it to be the same as the others but I have not a clue as to why it keeps changing sizes according to the review box. It most likely is a dumb error in the code that I have looked at so often I have become blind to it. Here I will post it to see if any one can see it.

Thanks

Is it just me or am I seeing only two </TABLE> closing tages and three <TABLE> opening tags. I would not think this would cause your problems, but then again...

I rellay enjoyed how you included the "free gift" part of your site. It sets you apart. However, one suggestion. Do an "if else" statement in your code to allow for the actual "invisible" category your created for the freebies to not either show period, or not have an arrow accompanied before it. Otherwise, this little arrow shows up after you have enough to get a freebie without text. Most will probably NEVER notice it, but details are what set us apart. :-)

I particularly enjoy the design of your site color-wise, though it does venture very close to a stock layout of osC. The colors make me think of the country decor I actually like, without all the clutter, knicknacks and plaid! (GASP!) Clean, original and nicely done. The newspaper look also works for me, with the two columns in the center. Usually, this is frowned upon, but you have managed to make it work very nicely. Congratulations.

Good use of a USP (Unique Sales Proposition) immediately top and center! "We believe shopping should be relaxing and crowd free." Assuming you follow throgh with this to the end, and incorporate the ease and relaxing issues of shopping with you, it is a grand and individual USP. Whether you consciously created that phrase as a USP or not is irrelevant, what you do with it is.

I seem to be recommending the box config contribtuion alot lately, but it helps dinstinguish the sites more from osC. You can find it here:

May you and George have the best of luck with your ventures!

Hi Kel,

I'm a bit late getting round to looking at your store but I thought I'd add my 2 cents/pence...

I really like the newspaper idea/ theme but you should know that the narrow columns (Kel's Offers Quantity Buying At Even Greater Savings) can be pretty difficult to read (esp at 800x600)

Also on most sites I'd expect the logo to be a link to the home page, although the breadcrumb trail obviously does the job nicely.

Nice site, very cute graphics!

Thank You Ruhl and Anna very much for your help and your comments.

Ruhl

I down loaded the contribution you suggested and I will give it a go once I get done updating the paypal module. And as for the USP (Unique Sales Proposition) , well that is my brain child, and to the best of my memory, I have never seen or heard it used before, although I have been around since the days of 8 tracks and 45 records .... :lol: , my memory is not what it use to be. Everything has a county flavor and down to earth because I grew up in farm country and we are never in a rush to do anything but get the cows milked and get the crops in before it rains, and we love peace and quiet. The logo is really our business card that I designed, and people liked it so well that I decided to use it on the site. We do fundraising for our community locally so I needed a card as well as a flier.

The if statement you talk about is something I don't understand. I have very little know how when it comes to php and sql and java. I know I did use Category Box Enhancement v 1.1 to make it have the little graphics beside the cat names. But I will try to find the file/s that control that and see what I can do to mess it up. Also the free gift contribution. So I will have a lot of hunting I would guess.

Anna

I will work on making the column to see what I can do to correct that issue, and toss in a link on the logo. You are right the majority of sites always have the logo linked to the index page for the site.

Hello Kel:

Forgive me, I use a heavily modified edition of osC and so my files will most definitely differ from yours. However, the material you will be looking for is in the file catalog/includes/boxes/categories.php.

You will want to look for something like the following:

 ?function tep_show_category($counter) {
? ?global $foo, $categories_string, $id;

? ?for ($a=0; $a<$foo[$counter]['level']; $a++) {
? ? ?$categories_string .= "  "; ?//This could possibly be "pointer_blue_light.gif"
? ?}

? ?$categories_string .= '<a href="';

? ?if ($foo[$counter]['parent'] == 0) {
? ? ?$cPath_new = 'cPath=' . $counter;
? ?} else {
? ? ?$cPath_new = 'cPath=' . $foo[$counter]['path'];
? ?}

You can change the above to something resembling the following:

  function tep_show_category($counter) {
   global $foo, $categories_string, $id;

   for ($a=0; $a<$foo[$counter]['level']; $a++) {
     if ($categoryid != 62) {  //I noticed your free cat # is 62
     $categories_string .= "  ";  //This could possibly be "pointer_blue_light.gif"
     }
   }

   $categories_string .= '<a href="';

   if ($foo[$counter]['parent'] == 0) {
     $cPath_new = 'cPath=' . $counter;
   } else {
     $cPath_new = 'cPath=' . $foo[$counter]['path'];
   }

What this basically does is allow you to have all categories that are NOT category # 62 (free one) have the "pointer blue light" arrow. Of course, you can extend this "if" statement to include the entire category listing procedure so that no text will show up if you gave the category a name.

Remember, back-up your files before experimenting!

It is definitely no problem. I just like to remind everyone I too make mistakes...ok, ALOT of mistakes, so I am sure that if you played around with the code you could do it cleaner and more efficiently.

Again, best of luck with your site!

As I've stated in my first post in this thread, I am no coder. It would seem to me that you can work around the paypal box issue by giving the table a finite pixel number instead of just 100%. This may pull the box out to the right size, with some guessing and re-guessing.

I am horrid with tables, so even if I was looking at a table with borders (which I have to do when I am tinkering with them to keep m bearings), I would have troubles.

Just a thought
