    NewsBox Mod Update

Hi, Just came back to check the replies to my mod... oh dear, there seem to be problems with some peoples sites while others report the mod as working. I have recently updated our site www.dappamobiles.com and installed a the new version of my NewsBox mod, again without any problems. I am assuming some certain servers are setup different or our site is configured differently that is affecting the operation of the NewsBox mod - take a look on our site to see the working version (v2.0) - unfortunately I cannot demo the admin section anymore as our site is now live. Judging by the errors some people are receiving I think the problem lies with server permissions - our current host ( www.aventurehosting.co.uk ) uses PHP 4.3.3, MySQL 4.015 and Perl 5 on a Linux box which I think is similar to the majority of the hosts out there. I had a chat a JavaScript guru and he suggests the problem may be due to other JavaScript code ineferring with the NewsBox, this would result in the NewsBox failing to scroll correctly; the JavaScript code is compliant with IE 4.01 to IE 6.01 browsers and has also been tested with Opera and Mozilla browsers. If you are receiving security errors then I would suggest you check your configuration files to make sure the correct paths are entered, especially the absolute paths to the OSC site (e.g. /home/public/mysite/oscommerce/catalog/ ). I appreciate the feedback so I can fix the bugs in the NewsBox as I want this to be a great mod and looking at past comments this is a mod that allot of people would like to use. Thanks in advance and sorry to those that have experienced problems, Taz
  2. Hi, I think I can make the changes for you, email me info@dappamobiles.com with details of what you want (fields, changes etc) and a copy of the Easy Populate 2.60 contrib and I will code some version for you and see which one works best. Thanks, Taz

Is there any Auction Module to osC ?

Hi, We had the same requirements a while back but after hunting around we decided to use a ready made 'eBay like' auction called PHPAuction Pro - this works great for us as it allows our customers to use a full blown auction however it is detached from the main OSCommerce site. You can view the example on our site here: dappamobiles.com auction We are in the process of looking into a possible integeration of the OSCommerce products into the auction where the admin in OSC can flag a product to appear in the auction and this would update the database for the auction to display the product in the next auction listing - its a long way off but we are ambitious! Good luck, Taz

    NewsBox Mod Update

Hi, Sorry for the delay in releasing this mod however I have been on a much deserved break for the past couple of months. I have made big improvements to the NewsBox mod, the main changes have taken place in the define_mainnews.php file. I have rewritten the code and removed allot of uneccessary baggage that was in there from the original define_languages.php file, also I have improved the save file feature and added a simple file save confirmation message to inform the user that the file has been saved. The new version does not require any duplicate files or use the original messy file copy/unlink code. I have tested this version fully and can report there are no file permission errors now. Anyone wishing to use the mod can get from here: NewsBox v2.0 Follow the instructions in the install.txt file and make sure that the mainnews.php file (located in the [ROOT]/catalog/ folder) has been chmodded to allow you to read and write to the file (666 or 766). Thanks and all feedback appreciated, Taz :D

    Scrolling News Box v1.0

The code is not clean for v1.13b but I am working on v2.0 which will have some recoding done for better admin and will store the in a new table in the main database. v1.13b is a workaround for the problem whereby the newsbox was unable to access the mainnews.php file in the /includes/languages/english/ folder due to permission problems. The best solution at the time was to create a copy of the file called lmainnews.php and put this in the languages folder so the admin section could access the file (I used the define_language.php file as my template) and when the user clicks on the save button the code simply saves the file and then copies the file to the root directory as mainnews.php, this file is then loaded up by the newsbox (the newsbox is able to access files in the root directory without any problems). The new code will be a rewrite of the define_mainnews.php admin file, I will either keep the same logic and simply rewrite the code to edit only one file ([root]/mainnews.php) or I will write new code to update a database table that will store the info as text in a field called news. The plan is to eventually have a proper editor in the administration section (much like this BB's new topic form) that will allow the user to create structured and formatted mini-articles that can be used in the newsbox with the option to add images and insert JavaScript/Flash/PHP code in the article. This I am hoping will become a full project so I can use the template and apply it to other parts of the site like editing the mainpage.php contents and entering product descriptions. Thanks, Tq :)
  6. Hi, I am working on two possible contributions, after getting my hands burn't releasing NewsBox v1.0 I have decided to first get feedback to see if my contributions are worth the hassle or not. Here is the live site http://www.dappamobiles.com/eshop/default.php I have three contributions on my site, all on the default.php page. 1. NewsBox v1.0 - lets you post mini news posts in a scrolling window (I have posted this in the contributions, v1.13b) 2. Shout Box - A mini shout box/guestbook that lets users post message live on the website 3. Live Support - not using LiveSupport mod, using phpOnline source; driven by Flash - customer sends talks via a pop-up window and administrator can talk to whoever is online via the OSC admin section (new page added under tools) Thats it for now, some other mods have been made in the logic but they are based around my site and need further testing (shopping cart, dynamic product list - lets you view associated accessories/products relating to the master product, uses DHTML/JavaScript for tree structure view) Thanks in advance, Taz

Who could make this contribution? Thx!

Hi, Sounds like a challenge... What would the languages and currencies be? Would you require an admin section so you could define what options are available to the customer at the index page? (they would view the languages you have defined in the admin section and make their selection) What if the user tries to manually enter the path to /default.php - would you there be a feature whereby the logic detects no language has been selected and returns the customer to the index page; also another option could be to have your default language selected if the user has not entered one. Thanks, Taz

    Scrolling News Box v1.0

    Tank27, ignore the previous post. Hey people, sorry I managed to include the wrong file in the contribution, an oversight on my part (too many late nights). To fix the problem simply edit newsbox.php located in /catalog/includes/boxes/ folder, change the following: $info_box_contents[] = array('text' => '<iframe id="datamain" src=' . DIR_WS_LANGUAGES . $languages . '/' . FILENAME_MAINNEWS . ' width=130 height=150 marginwidth=0 marginheight=0 hspace=0 vspace=0 frameborder=1 scrolling=no></iframe>'); To: $info_box_contents[] = array('text' => '<iframe id="datamain" src=' . DIR_WS_LANGUAGES . '/' . FILENAME_MAINNEWS . ' width=130 height=150 marginwidth=0 marginheight=0 hspace=0 vspace=0 frameborder=1 scrolling=no></iframe>'); I managed to include an old version of this file, the offending code was the $language variable, should not have been there - this was causing the site to look in the languages folder all the time. I have included the correct file in v1.13b. Thanks, T

Tank27, If its not too much trouble could kindly email me your configure.php file located in your /catalog/includes/ directory and the one in your admin/includes/ directory. I want to compare your settings to what I have been using on the test servers and see if the contribution is being affected by the fact that I am using OSC pointers in the code. Thanks, Taz tahir.khalid@dappamobiles.com

    Scrolling News Box v1.0

Tank27 hi, Check your folder /catalog/includes/languages/english/ and see if the file mainnews.php is in there, if it is then remove this file. In my new contrib there are two files, lmainews.php and mainnews.php. Copy the lmainnews.php into the above folder and copy the miannews.php file to /catalog/ (OSC root) folder. OSC is trying to find the file mainnews.php as declared in application_top.php "FILENAME_MAINNEWS', 'mainnews.php'" - any duplicates will be found first so if there is a mainnews.php file in the /includes/languages/english/ folder then OSC will try to point to this file which is why you are getting the permission denied error. Try this and let me know how it goes, Taz

    Scrolling News Box v1.0

Tank27, Hi, it looks like you have the files in the wrong place and thats my fault as my first contrib was not very good. I would recommend you install v1.13 as I fixed the previous problems in this contrib. 1. Remove all old files related to the original contribution: /catalog/includes/languages/english/mainnews.php/catalog/includes/boxes/newsbox.php /catalog/admin/define_mainnews.php 2. Download and Install NewsBox v1.13 - follow the instructions as stated in the install.txt, here is how the files should be installed: mainnews.php - /catalog/mainnews.php (in your OSC root folder)lmainnews.php - /catalog/includes/languages/english/lmainnews.php newsbox.php - /catalog/includes/boxes/newsbox.php define_newsbox.php - /admin/define_mainnews.php 3. Edit the files as listed in the install.txt: > Edit /catalog/includes/application_top.php and fine the line define('FILENAME_MAINNEWS','.......................'); - if you are using a http reference then change this to read define('FILENAME_MAINNEWS','mainnews.php'); . > Follow the remainder of the install.txt to complete the admin installation. You should have only one mainnews.php file located in the root of your OSC site, secondly you should have only one lmainnews.php located in /catalog/includes/languages/english/ folder. I will endeavour to simply my installation instructions and make them more user friendly. Thanks in advance, Taz :D

    Scrolling News Box v1.0

Hi, When I originally commissioned this script it worked on three other OSC live sites, 1 Windows 2000/IIS based and two Linux/Unix boxes. Like any contribution on OSC there will be bugs and these would not have been found it I had not recieved the feedback. If your going to be critical about the post then why don't you do us all a favour and post to every person on this forum who has posted a contribution and there have been bugs, I am sure this will satisfy your urge to post questions about why something doesn't work. I am more than willing to help anyone who is experiencing problems with the contribution because at the end of the day I want to do my little bit for OSC and hopefully offer an contribution that other people would be interested in. Thanks, T :?

    Scrolling News Box v1.0

Hi, Guys thanks for all the feedback so far, since the feedback I have been working on refining the mod and making it as simple as possible. With any coding of this kind there will always be bugs and thats the one great thing about this forum, contributers are taking feedback from users and fixing or updating their mods. I have resolved the problem you guys have been experiencing, it was an error in the distribution, the file newsbox.php is pointing to the wrong location for the file mainnews.php. To fix the problem open the file newsbox.php located in /catalog/includes/boxes/newsbox.php and change the following line: $info_box_contents[] = array('text' => '<iframe id="datamain" src=' . DIR_WS_LANGUAGES . $languages . '/' . FILENAME_MAINNEWS . ' width=130 height=150 marginwidth=0 marginheight=0 hspace=0 vspace=0 frameborder=1 scrolling=no></iframe>'); To this: $info_box_contents[] = array('text' => '<iframe id="datamain" src=' . DIR_WS_CATALOG . '/' . FILENAME_MAINNEWS . ' width=130 height=150 marginwidth=0 marginheight=0 hspace=0 vspace=0 frameborder=1 scrolling=no></iframe>'); This will tell OSC to look for the file mainnews.php in the root of the website (using the pointer DIR_WS_CATALOG to tell the site the file is in the root folder), the old code was telling OSC to look in the languages/english/ folder which does not work now as the file does not exist in this folder since v1.12 of the mod. Please download v1.13 which contains all of the bug fixes http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,1370 Thank you for being patient, Taz

    Scrolling News Box v1.0

Ignore my blabbling - I was getting two different posts mixed up here. The zip file contains a file called mainnews.php, this needs to be copied to two locations: /catalog/mainnews.php & /catalog/includes/languages/[LANGUAGE]/mainnews.php - where [LANGUAGE] is your language directory (english, german etc). Follow the instructions in the install.txt so you should have the following new files: /catalog/mainnews.php /catalog/includes/boxes/newsbox.php /admin/define_newsbox.php CHMOD both the mainnews.php files so they are set to 666 (read/write) permission. If you have followed the above and you still get permission denied error then edit the file /catalog/includes/application_top.php and change the line: define('FILENAME_MAINNEWS', 'mainnews.php'); To: define('FILENAME_MAINNEWS', 'http://yourdomain/catalog/mainnews.php'); This should fix the problem. v1.12 has been uploaded with the new changes. Thanks for the feedback, Taz
