    Hi all.

    I've just been reading but I don't know where to start, the more I read the more confusing it gets.

    I am currently testing it on my  localhost ubuntu server and all is working as it should but which version to use I've tried everything from official and community supported, not being coder just can't find a decent one with good templates.

    Oscommerce being opensource why can't I find decent templates that are easy to install?  the one I could find are too old or don't work due to my limited coding skills.

    Would anyone be kind enough to upload oscommerce with pre build in template that looks and feels modern and sleek?  That I can install and test?

    Thanks and much appreciated.

    I dont wish to sound harsh, or to try to put you off, but if I was starting from new, I would avoid official OScommerce like the plague. Its old, its not been updated in years and it is not mobile friendly. It has loads of other faults as well, so too many to list here. There are better free ecommerce platforms out there.

    Well thats the official release anyway. What you will find on the forum is a version called community, bootstrap, edge, gold frozen and many other names, but they are all the same. Use one of the latest versions, frozen is the best and latest and you will have a decent website to start with. No need for templates as the CSS is easy to change. All latest addons created and developed are for this version rather than the official version, so that must tell you something.

    Like any new software it takes a bit of learning, but it is not that hard to pick up basics. This forum is great if you need help.

    Is  not easy to do, best thing probably is to get a professional to do it.

    Why do you say that. There are so many supposedly good SEO companies out there or blokes at home that think they know SEO and they achieve nothing that someone cant do themselves with a bit of effort and work. Most of what a professional can do can be done with oscommerce easily so no need to pay.

    If there was an SEO company that had any conviction of what they can do will actually show a reward why wont they offer their service on a pay by results type thing.

    I think it would be great to make a package (called frozen 2 or as you like) that has the new admin of @shetch and the Frozen version with its bug fixes so that new users can download them in one place.

    What the community lacks are periodic updates to show that the software is alive.

    I do not know if this is the best place to post it, but the work of @shetchis fantastic, it's the cooler in oscommerce for a long time and it would be great to integrate it into the Frozen package.

    What do you think?

    Best regards.

    Valqui

    It would be up to the developers of the BS4 admin and the CE version to get together and discuss this. It is one area that Gary openly admits to not having the time to do  too much with, but the code will have to meet his standards.

    The only problem I see with updating the admin are is that every admin module or report will also need to be updated. Thats a lot of work in someone fancies doing it, but none will.

    There is also no room here for another fork of the software. It just wont be allowed and any posts relating to it will be removed.

    May be there is potential for someone that wants regular updates to post the ones that are carried out on Github so the forum members can see what is being done. The CE version is constantly being worked on so there are loads of updates happening. We cant all expect one person to do it all.

  4. @mhsuffolk  Its a huge problem and one that I cannot see being sorted. As its a payment industry thing others are bound to have to be updated. I have tried to find a developer to update the stripe module and no one is interested. Tried on people per hour and only got unknowledgeable people wanting daft money or developers from oscommerce who are partners and wont allow to give the updated module to the community.

  5. I have been trying to get the Stripe Payment module updated fora while, but can get no interest from anyone that knows what they are doing. Earlier last week I received the following email from Stripe.

    Quote

    Hello,

    On 14 September 2019, a new European regulatory requirement called Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) will introduce two-factor authentication requirements for many online payments in Europe. We expect this regulation to be enforced in the UK regardless of the outcome of Brexit. Payments that aren’t authenticated will be declined by your customers’ banks.

    We’ve released a new payments API and SCA-ready products to help you prepare for this change. To get ready for these new rules and avoid having many European payments declined, you’ll need to make changes to your payment flows and Stripe integration by 14 September 2019. Read our docs to learn more about SCA and the required changes.

    It now looks as if the current Stripe module will no longer work after 14th September unless there is an update. If the module is not updated, myself and others that use Stripe as a payment method will have to move to an ecommerce cart that has updated their payment system. Is there one developer out there that is prepared to update this module. I am sure costs could be discussed.

    I also assume that other payment modules will need to be updates also.

  6. Your best bet is to find some really good current information on the internet. There are loads of people that think they know how to do SEO, but very few actually do. You have to find the ones that do, and that's not easy. Read lots and learn what the basics are. Google has some very good information and tools available to make your life a bit easier. Then try to get that basic information into every page of your site.

    Depending on the version you are using will depend on what addons you need to install.

  7. @burt Gary I have been following this thread with interest. Love what you are doing it does sound good. If you want another tester I will be pleased to help if I can, Time is currently very short due to circumstances, but I may be able to input something.

  8. The email system is not the best to put it politely. Use something that is designed to send emails like mailchimp. All you have to do then is to figure out a way to sync the subscribers, which is not too hard. It may also save your site from being blacklisted. Mailchimp allows you to send nice pretty emails and its free up to a certain level of subscribers.

  9. Have a look in the addons area for 'back to top' or something similar as I think there was one done previously that may or may not work. Saying that anything done through the 28days will help move osc forward.

  10. Whilst I have not seen what you are doing I have been following this thread with anticipation for anything better than is originally available. It sound like you are getting somewhere Gary. Well done.

    I would love to see a system where order status update emails could be written specifically for the update status replacing the standard 'your order has been upgraded to' emails. And the same with the 'new customer' or other emails. They are all a bit plain and do nothing for future sales.

    Like I say, cant wait to see where this leads as it sounds good.

    This has given the acorn of an idea...

    A simple HT module that gathers data.

    • Customer signs up gives you DOB.
      1 month before next birthday, send email...
    • Customer logs off (save cart happens)
      send email in 5 days (if they dont log back in prior)
    • Customer makes order
      send email in 30 days asking for review
      send email in 21 days with ideas for complementary products

    And so on.  I'm sure the panel can think of more such scenarios.

    And then a simple mechanism (perhaps a Hook?) to fire emails off at/near the correct date/time.

    It *could* work.

    Interesting idea if it could be made to work. I would like to send a pdf invoice say 5 days after the items were posted which could be used to ask for a review or what ever just to extend the sales process and to check to make sure that everything was ok with the order. I bet there are more ideas.

  12. @zefeena Love your rant. Most of us small businesses are in the same position. I certainly am.

    Here's what I did to get a development / test sore.

    First I created a new database and remembered the details that I used from within my hosting cpanel

    I then created a new folder in my root folder on my current live server. I installed the latest oscommerce version in to this folder which is possible using the standard oscommerce install files and the database details that were just created. I then password protected that complete folder using cpanel from my hosting. That stops the likes of google and other people accessing that folder.

    I have a host where its possible to setup different php versions on different files so I used php7.2 on this whole folder.

    I can now sit and play with the  latest code. I can add and remove modules and code as I please and not affect my main site. I assume that eventually I wil lhave to update the database with all the products, customers and what ever when the store goes live, but that should be done quickly.

    If you feel unable to create the folder, database and install oscommerce try asking one of the better coders in this forum. It wont cost you as much as you think and will remove all the possible problems and stress. When the time comes I am sure for a small cost the database details can be transferred also. I did that last time and it was relatively cheap.

  13. What bit of the code are you actually having problems with. If my memory serves me right there is only a small amount of code to add to the htaccess file.

    This is the code from the install file

    # Begin Ultimate SEO V2.2d

    RewriteRule ^(.*)-po-([0-9]+).html$ pollbooth.php?pollid=$2&%{QUERY_STRING}
    # End Ultimate SEO V2.2d

    I put this bit of code near the top of the htaccess file after all the marked out oscommerce stuff at the top. I have also removed all the bits that I dont use like the faqdesk and newsdesk stuff but I dont think you have to.

    Which bit is tripping you up. If its the bit you have to alter you said in another post that your files are in the root folder so you just need to change the line to

    RewriteBase /

    Hope this helps.

  14. If you are using bootstrap version have a look in the language files for the page you want to alter.

    In the latest version of Frozen in the index language file you have

    // seo
    if ( ($category_depth == 'top') && (!isset($_GET['manufacturers_id'])) ) {
      define('META_SEO_TITLE', 'Index Page Title');
      define('META_SEO_DESCRIPTION', 'This is the description of your site to be used in the META Description Element');
      /*
      keywords are USELESS unless you are selling into China and want to be listed in Baidu Search Engine
      */
      define('META_SEO_KEYWORDS', 'these, are, the, comma, separated, keywords, used in the META keywords Element');
    }

    Its in lots of other pages, and if you create new pages it is easy to add.
