osCommerce-Official got a reaction from Fredi in New management and osCommerce v4
    Steve,
What will soon become osCommerce v4 has been in development for the last 5 years or so. It was conceived with the intention to have an Ecommerce platform that is modern, secure, flexible, relatively easy to upgrade, and has soooo many features that it can offer solutions to various businesses, of different sizes, from different industries and countries.
There are a few hundred businesses using it at the moment. Businesses whose success can to some degree be contributed to the platform, as it automates a number of processes and operations, improves data quality, speeds things up from the users' point of view, etc.
Our intention is to offer this platform to existing osCommerce users and developers, and broader public as such (i.e. people and businesses who didn't hear of osCommerce, or heard of osCommerce 10 years ago, or got upset with osCommerce not moving forward when the rest of the world did and switched to something else) so that we could redevelop the brand and community, and turn it into a very popular and successful Ecommerce solution and business for everyone involved into it.
It takes some time to create osCommerce v4 from the current platform, and this is what we are working on now. We are looking to make it ready for php 8. We are moving some parts of the functionality into the add-ons. We're working on the manuals for users and developers, and so on.
We are really looking forward to releasing osCommerce v4 as soon as possible. And then - will continue working on it, releasing new features as apps and new versions several times a year (but not too often).
We would be very happy to see you and everyone else using osCommerce v4 in this or that way. Creating and running new successful websites with it. Creating new apps, modules, design themes. Offering development support and Ecommerce consulting to businesses. There are so many things we can do together!
And if somebody wants to still use some old osCommerce or another shopping cart for any reasons - so be it, it is totally fine. We want to see osCommerce v4 considered on its merits, on what positive change and improvements it can bring to the business - either of the online retailer or of osCommerce developer.
You're welcome to get in touch via the Contact page, happy to have a phone chat with you.

    Thanks, glad you like it
Also, it is possible to use site-wide SEO redirects to "shorten" longer URLs before adding them to newsletters, social media posts, etc

    Ashley, good question, thanks!
All those features are already present and are being used by multiple websites.
The way it works is as follows:
    1. Products have a thing called Properties. Properties can be of several different type, and are used to describe products in a more structured way than simply product description. It is possible to consider properties as technical specification.
    2. Filters are dynamic and are created based on properties in the current product listing
    3. Product comparison works off the properties too (and price, stock, description, etc)
Please take a look at some examples attached to this post.
Also this site uses filters on different categories: https://www.drinksdirect.com/ (but not the compare feature)

The v4 will be a new version, a completely new version, nothing in relation to the current version 2.2, 2.3, 2.4.
All the community must restart by zero but the new manager tries to take into consideration all the requests inside the community to give you the best experience i in the new software.

Yes, there exists pagination for reviews.
Currently they load without the URL being changed, AJAX.
Will confirm reg. how to control the number of them being displayed.

It's better to have the shipping inside Marketplace / add on .. as you want.  It's very specific and it's in relation to the country. Also, the new v4 developer does not make all the shipping in all the country. Just the basic is enough after ti will inside the hand of the community.

Just USA. Not all people in the world need all possible possibilities. In my store e.g. I never offer "Delivery by FedEx". So why should I have it in the box? Or for other Europeans UPS and FedEx aren't popular, they prefer DHL, DPD or their local postal service. Germany and Switzerland have so called Packstationen run by the local "Post". Would you have them also in the box as shipping method: delivery to "Packstation"?
Once again: A small clear system with high performance and all other methods as Add-On's.

This also could be a KO factor. Not everyone needs 30-40 or more payments methods. At the end, I would say, ~95% are not in use.
I would say 10 or 15, maybe 20 but not more, most important methods and all others as Add-On's. At Version 2.3.4.1 there are alone 23 methods of Moneybookers, today Skrill. Most of them are only for 1, 2 or 3 European countries. So why should a store e.g. in Singapore have all those methods in the box? I prefer a smaller and clearer , but faster system without to much overload.

Me too, and it's not only a thought: "Application software (app for short) is a program or group of programs designed for end-users.". And app sounds too much like apple.
    For me Add-On or contribution

osCommerce-Official got a reaction from Pritchard78 in Order Structure (totals) modules
It is possible to configure, enable and disable multiple modules that together constitute Orders in osCommerce v4. There exists a special Order Structure menu under Modules, which to a degree extends what used to be Order Totals in previous versions of osCommerce.
As with all the modules, we have made it possible for osCommerce developers to create an add their own Order structure modules.
Currently existing modules are as follows:

Their position (which can be re-arranged by using the drag-and-drop feature) defines how the system uses them for every order.
Each order total module has a number of settings, including restrictions and positioning:

It is possible to set, for example, the shipping fee, to include tax on the checkout pages, but exclude tax on the invoices.

    Thanks for your comments.
New osCommerce v4 is based on a framework YII, on top of which we implemented all solutions and features based on our experience working with osCommerce since 2002, and on our experience working with thousands of business clients from all over the world in the last 20 years.
There will definitely be a learning curve for designers and developers. It is a new solution, capable of more than ever before.
Note though, the main point about new osCommerce is that one can run a successful online store based on osCommerce without the need to code unless they want to create new modules, new widgets, new apps. Everything is available and is managed from the back end of the website, and is designed to allow businesses, developers, consultants - you name it! - to be able to operate their Ecommerce store based on osCommerce in the most efficient way.
We will ensure all the required development manuals are available to the community and will welcome development partners to create solutions based on and for the new osCommerce!

It is a good idea indeed, if for a particular product the webmaster could put the old review URL into the "Old URL" field.

since the new osCommerce v4 is based on YII2, it has the said debugging information available if a corresponding mode is switched on. It looks like this:

Cache is available for templates, DB queries, etc. We will be posting about the technology in more details in the near future.

OK makes sense. In fact they are called Themes in osCommerce v4 by default (although, it is possible to change it using the built in Translation tool).
Inside a Theme, there exist multiple page templates. And theme settings, etc. All editable in the back end, all completely separate from the core of course.
Also, there exist Widgets, that can be of two types - general (like banner, for example) and page-specific (like product price, for example).
We would like to encourage osCommerce designers and developers to not only customize existing themes, but create new ones and list them in the future marketplace.

Multiple number of suppliers per product, with a formula to help the system decide which supplier to take stock / order from depending on their price, average order fulfilment time, etc.
Stock alerts - will double check that; it seems it should be possible to find a workaround using the "default supplier" associated with a designated member of the team.

    Thanks, Loïc!
    Yes, we do, actually.
Every product can have a stock status and delivery status. Stock status can be something like:
    - in stock (based on stock count)
    - always in stock
    - EOL (i.e. will not be available once sold)
    - Pre-order
    - Out of stock
    - Request for Quote
those statuses are configurable and it is possible to create you own, and set the system to act differently in regards to allowing customers to purchase and how stock is allocated depending on the stock status.
There's a system that can take supplier stock into consideration and "pre sell" it as if it was available.
There's also a system that can take PO stock into consideration and "pre sell" it as if it was available.
Naturally, in both cases above orders will reach "received" status only when stock is actually recorded as incoming into the warehouse.
And of course, osCommerce users do not have to use all those stock solutions if their operations do not require them. However, for those businesses that would like to consider osCommerce as their main business management tool - the facilities will be there!
