  1. Have had clients reporting the same, to be listed on Google Products its now mandatory to use SSL on the carts checkout. Its not something specifically for oscommerce carts, its for any cart system.

  2. Footer can now be seen live: http://www.template.me.uk/2334bs3/index.php

Remember that these footer components are controlled the same way as normal infoBoxes - you can sort them, you can remove them, you can add new ones. But with this ease brings limitations - you need to know how to code an infoBox so that it is available for you to include it into the Footer via the admin > modules > boxes page.

Looks nice... The information box reminds me that oscommerce should definitely have a way to make info pages in admin, with the option of including the page link in the box or not.

  3. I am in desperate need of some payment icons (vias, mastercard, paypal) which must be GPL or MIT license and distributable. Anyone got any or know where to get some?

You can use the set for all of your projects for free and without any restrictions. You can freely use it for both your private and commercial projects, including software, online services, templates and themes. The set may not be resold, sublicensed or rented.

  4. There is not that much difference in modifying the looks of oscommerce as it is today and alternative carts with template systems.

A template system does not really make it easier for a "any non-coder shop owner" to change his/hers shop design themselves.

The type of templating system used by most cms/shopping cart software is simply that the visual/design part has been separated from the core code. ie. you still have to edit html code and php tags or shortcodes to actually change the design.

The advantages lays more in that updating the core code while maintaining the design gets easier as-well as that you can buy "drop-in" templates.
