osCommerce is becoming a modern, featured Ecommerce platform for small, medium, and large businesses. With v4 we will bring the solution that has been developed for a bit more than 5 years to the market. 
osCommerce will continue being a free open source Ecommerce solution. At least until / if we also launch a "saas" version of it. But on-premises version will always be like that. 
We are looking at osCommerce as a business. It needs to be sustainable for osCommerce itself, and of course for osCommerce developers and designers - members of this Community. And so, the core version will be free, multiple add-ons (apps, modules, widgets, themes) will also be free. There will be paid apps. There will be paid support services. There will be some arrangements about the development programme perhaps. This is being worked on at the moment. The main point is that for osCommerce to be as such, it needs to become profitable for everyone involved.
osCommerce can not develop and benefit if osCommerce designers and developers will not develop and benefit in the first turn.

I think its great you have made this contribution, anything that further protects the osCommerce community is well worth adding, well done.

I am about to release version 3 of the IP Trap,
Updated features
Cleaned code,
Added a Whitelist, with Search engine IP numbers loaded
Redesigned the Blocked.php page.
Added correct syntax for robots.txt
Updated install file.

This depends on how fast they are coming, the file locks the banned ip file prior to writing to it so if you are getting a lot then this might be a cause, i would not use the IP trap for this reason as you are blocking unsuspecting victims of a phising attempt, users that may well want to be your customers in the near future!
I would put up a page in the location instead with some helpful information for users so they understand whaat has gone on and how it is nothing to do with the official site there.

OK i had enough of you now,
I found out who it was and PM'd him to ask if it was OK to publish he said yes, this was after i had done so but could have had it taken down, (you can of course PM him and ask him if i did or not) if you are so hot then sort it yourself and release it, some people seem to only want to complain and you seem to be one of them, rather than be constructive you choose to attack.
If i'm so bad then why has HPDL been asking me to help him with some work?

Taking an idea and releasing it as a contribution when no-one else seems to want to for the benefit of all is not a new thing it happens a fair amount.

Thank you for your kind words, im not too sure what you mean.
Do you have a dynamic IP like Isa ?
The point of the white list is not so much to stop you from being banned as you know the IP trap is there, it is intended to be a cushion to prevent Search engines like Google and Yahoo, who's IP numbers are in the whielist from being banned.
So even if your IP number is dynamic and you do get banned just dont go in the trap.

Yes add the admin folder if this is what you will rename the personal folder to, i have an update out to protect the admin folder (or where ever you have you admin folder) i will release it soon, there are a few who have tested this for me already and it works fine, just a simple change to make it work too.

Firstly I think this is a great contribution.
 
One question though - can I use this as another layer of security to prevent anyone not on the whitelist from trying to access my admin files?
 
Am I being too simplistic in thinking I just need to add another line to the disallows in the robots file?

I got to your site so I am not banned (thank you), then I went to "the" folder and was redirected to the home page. So, for me it worked as expected.
 
PS I tried IE6 and FF.
 
PPS on my site I copied the contents of "the" directory to a new folder called admin.
