maz, That's exactly what this contribution does: presents a boxed sub-navigation system (either using text links or image links) with the current category sub-categories. Try it out, and report back about how well it suits your requirements. Regards,

Download contribution: Browse by Categories Version: 2.6 osCommerce: 2.2-MS1/MS2 Feature Requests closed by this version: Parent Category Link in Product Listing - Aims to present a more practical navigation to visitors, by providing a link to the parent category of the current category product listing. Kudos: belray. Apply CSS display:inline or display:block to Sub-Category Links - Aims to allow better control over the way the sub-category links are displayed. At present, when positioned below the category icon (image/text), the sub-category links follow one another, instead of occupying a new line. Kudos: dasoccerbomb. New Layout - Set BRWCAT_ICON_MODE = 'text', BRWCAT_SUBCAT_MODE ='bottom' and BRWCAT_ICONS_PER_ROW = 1. It requires new configuration settings: to control the number of sub-category icons per row and to enable/disable the content box title. Kudos: akasharkbow. Fix version in code comments - Clean out outdated comments with older versions from index.php, default.php and other files in the contribution. Kudos: Ethan1701. Handle Categories with Products and Sub-Categories - Must add a new include in order to present the module content box for when a category with products is not a leaf-category. Kudos: Ethan1701.

I've changed several processes and procedures I use to code. One of the biggest changes was starting to use Subversion to keep track of changes. This helps me alot, nowadays. Another big change was "forgetting" about MS1 and focus on MS2. Other minor changes also "helped" to invest alot of time away from this contribution. I've also "stalled" in improving my tailored MS2, since I've started other projects. I'll try to evolve this contribution, as best as I can, while counting on the help of community to test, debug, give feedback and so on. But since it's been quite a long time since anyone asked for v2.6.0 I assumed people were happy with v2.5.0 features. What I don't want is to invest time in something like HTMLArea for osCommerce, where I worked for nearly no results in the end. But these two contributions have very different "audiences" or "targets", which has been an advantage for BBC. The final question is: while MS3 remains to be released for "public", does it make sense to invest time in a MS2 contribution? Knowing that code will have to be tweaked for MS3, anyway? Shouldn't we start a new thread, for v2.6.0 onward? What are your (community) comments?

Hi azer, These are the changes so far: Kudos: Ethan1701 - http://forums.oscommerce.com/index.php?showtopic=65657&view=findpost&p=352498 * Fix version in code comments - Clean out outdated comments with older versions from index.php, default.php and other files in the contribution. Kudos: Ethan1701. * Handle Categories with Products and Sub-Categories - Must add a new include in order to present the module content box for when a category with products is not a leaf-category. Kudos: Ethan1701 Features Request for Browse by Categories v2.6: * Parent Category Link in Product Listing - Aims to present a more practical navigation to visitors, by providing a link to the parent category of the current category product listing. Kudos: belray. * Apply CSS display:inline or display:block to Sub-Category Links - Aims to allow better control over the way the sub-category links are displayed. At present, when positioned below the category icon (image/text), the sub-category links follow one another, instead of occupying a new line. Kudos: dasoccerbomb. * New Layout - Set BRWCAT_ICON_MODE = 'text', BRWCAT_SUBCAT_MODE ='bottom' and BRWCAT_ICONS_PER_ROW = 1. It requires new configuration settings: to control the number of sub-category icons per row and to enable/disable the content box title. Kudos: akasharkbow. v2.6.0 28/Apr/2004 browse_categories.php - Remove Version from Comments (in /catalog/includes/languages/<language>/). application_top.php - Remove Version from Comments (in /catalog/includes/). filenames.php - Remove Version from Comments (in /catalog/includes/). default.php - Remove Version from Comments. Handle Non-Leaf Categories with Products. index.php - Remove Version from Comments. Handle Non-Leaf Categories with Products. stylesheet.css - Added Sub-Category Inline Bulleted List of Links. browse_categories.php - Moved Language files to modules/. ----------------------------------------------------------- Moved browse_categories.php under each <language> folder to the sub-folder modules/ of same <language> folder. But I haven't made "uniform" changes, such as update English and other language files, besides other ToDos that are still left to code. If people shows interest, I can publish the v2.6.0 "as is" so community can debug, test and apply new features. But keep in mind that this v2.6.0 is a very "personal" version, tailored for what I need and not aiming at being "public" and covering most people's feature-wishlists. I've not move forward on integrating it with Zen-Cart, for instance. Thanks.

wine, Then it seems not to have anything to do with this contribution (Browse by Categories). If that's the case, your post is a bit off-topic. I'm saying this because your fix is applied on an original osCommerce file, and not on any of the contribution files. Why do you think it's a bug (error) of Browse by Categories? Thanks.

Azer, et al, Welcome back, and I sure appreciate you throwing this "one up high". I never got around to finish v2.6, mainly because the target was portability: make the contribution usable both in osCommerce and Zen-Cart (as vajra asked me). But Zen-Cart template system made that target tricky for me to hit, so I've not been updating the contribution as I should. As such, and following your words, please, post all pending requests and bugs or issues anyone may have about Browse by Categories, and I'll try to fixe them ASAP. It may be worthy to kickstart a new thread, since this is 8 pages long already. Thanks.

Boulou, I may miss the point of your request, but if what you want are seperate Category Boxes, one for each Category, to be customized ("themed") differently of one another, I don't see any easy way to achieve that using this contribution. I've given some thought, and what might make some sense is using these ThemeableCategoryBoxes just for a small amount of categories, and all at the top-level. This goes complety against the "principle" behind this contribution: provide a quick, simple and intuitive navigation system through all categories and their sub-categories (all levels). Maybe someone else has a different thought about your request, and care to post it here. Regards.

Seems not. My guess is that you didn't run the SQL Script that inserts the required data into the database tables. Have you done it? Hope this helps you out.

ciraklizer and anatolius, In fact, gsbe did provide a valuable answer. It might not suit your expectations, but it's indeed a good answer. Another answer, coming from someone that coded much of this module current functionality, I'd that it is possible, since the work to do simply must take into account these following two issues: * In order to set how many columns the online shop administrator wants, a database configuration setting must be created. * In order to display the sub-categories list in column mode, another case must be added in the module code. I suggest that if the new configuration settings is different than 0 or 1 (default value) then the preparation of sub_category array should be tabular. Else, use existing code and make a bullet list. This is not a minor change but it's also not a major change. It's something straight forward, on a short and brief analysis. Unfortunately, as anyone can see by following this thread, I don't have enough spare-time available at the moment, and I don't know when I can re-start the evolution of this module functionalities. Hope this has been helpful as well. Thanks.

    HTMLArea v3.0

See this post here at http://forums.oscommerce.com/index.php?sho...ndpost&p=429004 Then, not only would it be a default feature, but also most problems (bugs) reported here would cease. Does anyone have any comments about this? Thanks.

Didier, Good question. I'm not sure, but since the module runs two "not so simple" SQL SELECT statements, one for current categories and another for sub-categories of each current category I'd assume that a cache would make a difference. Of course, refactoring the code would probably be a better way of increasing the general speed of execution for the module, but as I said I don't know. Since it works fine for me I've not done much to improve it, besides trying to cope with feature requests from other users. Does anyone have a good understanding of how a cache could improve this module? I'm always open to suggestions, and the code is out there for whoever wants and knows how to improve it. :) Thanks.

ecopeia, Please, review this topic because I'm very sure someone else asked about that feature as well: display 2nd and 3rd level categories from front page. I recall that the site was great, so ask the person for some help if you can, because I think a fix was done at the time, not sure though. Hope this helps. P.S.: I keep not receiving e-mail notifications for this topic, which prevents me from answering quicker.

ecopeia, I remember someone having a problem with 3rd-level or deeper sub-categories, but I also recall that it was fixed. It seems to me that it's best to release v2.6 before closing all open issues, specially since it's been quite a long time since I last did any code tweaking on this contribution. BTW, great looking site, very lean and appealing, so you should have no problems in keeping your customers visiting the site. Moving on, there are now 3 places in index.php to include the Browse by Categories module. As Ethan1701 so well pointed out, the documentation to install this module must be improved, and I intended to do that in v2.6. Please, review this thread to see the latest posts about editing the index.php. Just keep in mind that if you don't want to have the Browse by Categories module on front page then you must not follow the indications for the last include on index.php Hope that helps... P.S.: for some reason I didn't receive the notification about your previous post, but yes this is the active thread (although not that active at the moment).
