Hi,
I am currently running several OSC 2.2 Rc2a stores and they run like a dream, thankyou to everyone!
However, I am concious that one day with the advances of PHP / Sql etc that the day will come when they will no longer function.
So planning ahead......
Im thinking of starting work on a local copy of OSC (via Xammp) to incorporate all the modifications that I need (or that I am used to and like).
As I have plenty of time (I think) to get this right before my 2.2 stores are obsolete would I be best advised to use 2.3.1 or wait until a stable V3 is released?

A new store using v2.3.1 would ensure it is PHP 5.3 compatible, which is the concern of most RC2a store owners as more and more hosting providers update their server software. Also, if you really want to forecast, you could look at PHP 5.4 changes.

Given the past history of osC development, I would count on it being years before a truly production-ready osC v3 hits the street. You really don't want to wait around for v3 and let your stores stagnate -- think about updating "reasonably soon" to 2.3.1, and they've promised that there will eventually be a formal upgrade path from 2.3.x or 2.4.x to 3.x. Even if there isn't, 2.3+ will be a lot cleaner and easier to upgrade to something else than 2.2 would be.

i'm of the opinion that the foundations of OSCommerce has a long life span but the front end technology is already very much out of date.
V3 doesn't appear to be using technologies such as AJAX or tapping more into the whole social media, which is becoming more popular.
I hate the fact V2 uses tables to structure the whole site, it's primative and very rigid in what can achieved design wise.
Despite this, I fully appreciate the efforts (for free by the sounds of it), of those who develop OsCommerce. It's almost a thankless job.

I've applied core (security) changes and made my site compatible with the template introduced in 2.3.1.
I'm assuming if I keep up with the latest release, there will be a supported migration path when the time comes ...

The latest version of oscommerce uses very few tablesespecially on the shop front.

I am not a coder, so dont bother sending PMs asking for help as you wont get any.
OSC has a steep learning curve, but in general the program does work. If it doesnt work, the chances are it is something you have done.
