Hi guys,

My hosting company is dropping support for php 5.2 so I have to upgrade to php 5.3 in a few days!

My site (and the OSC parts) work 100% under php 5.2. Although the OSC installation is heavily modified (whos isn't?), it's nearly all cosmetic so the core files are fairly untouched. The content pages are served inside frames but don't let that put you off as it works fine under php 5.2 and has never interfered with how OSC works.


The first thing I did on my quest to upgrade to php 5.3 was to manually update the files using this contribution...

... I then searched all files for depreciated functions listed in the following link and changed them to their php 5.3 equivelents. The only one I had a problem with was magicquotes so I used a php.ini file inside the catalog dir with magic_quotes_gpc = On and magic_quotes_runtime = On...

Job done so I begin to test and to my amazement everything seems to work just dandy. I then check the php generated error logs and it shows just one error (happy days)...

PHP Deprecated:  Function set_magic_quotes_runtime() is deprecated in /home/MYUSERNAME/public_html/microbuild/catalog/includes/classes/class.phpmailer.php on line 1091

... My first thoughts were that I was lucky that it was just one error, but also that it was strange that the php.ini didn't prevent this. Anyhoo, I contact my hosting company (a: because they are very helpful and b: because I'm not an expert) and they tell me that I'm using a 5.2 version of the php.ini file and give me a 5.3 version which I edit to switch the same magicquotes features on and upload to the server...

BOOM!

The OSC fails in a drastic way with pages not even loading so I do what anyone would and replace the php.ini file with the original working version but nothing changes and the error remains. So I then look at the php error logs and this is what I see...

...Which happens in pages that includes application_top.php and/or rely on that to generate a value for $language. You can see in the above error reports that the require is missing "english" in "require(includes/languages/.php)"...

... So I look at line 285 in application_top.php...

284 // include the language translations
285  require(DIR_WS_LANGUAGES . $language . '.php');

... and figure that I can (as a test) hardcode the value of $language='english'; but that doesn't work. Looking at the code in application_top.php, I can see that $language is generated using functions in sessions.php so I updated both functions/sessions.php files using the changes mentioned in the following link...

... but that hasn't solved the problem either. My hosting company looked into it but, as you can imagine, it's not their job to debug my files. However, in closing they sent me this message but to be honest, it's all a bit beyond my skills which is why I'm now reaching out to you guys for help...
