osCommerce upgrades are impossible

I have a client with a largish site using RC2 2.2 and STS

There have been a couple of database injection hacks and the site is obviously not secure. However, upgrading to 2.3.1 is a massively complex process AFAICS and does not allow the use of STS, so the whole look of the site would have to change. Updating to 3.0.2 seems to be even more fraught.

I can't really consider using osCommerce for clients again unless the upgrading process is at least semi-automated (as, for example, in Wordpress). How easy is version 3 to upgrade?
