  1. anyone had any luck with a custom theme? its been quiet. my store upgrade is pretty much dead in the water because its too hard to redesign.
  2. some issue i have. if i click on "widget groups" while customising theme i get Error An internal server error occurred. The above error occurred while the Web server was processing your request. Please contact us if you think this is a server error. Thank you. i have been trying to add the left hierarchy of categories like the old version. so i am understanding now this is a widget that does not exist? is the correct? only the demo widget which is a toolbar logo type does? i can add the stock categories widget to the home page, but further to this, if i go to the "product" page in the theme edit to add the "categories" widget also. it does not show up? why?
  3. have to agree, i could not figure out how to get the old category hierarchy showing left, now from my understanding it may need to be a widget that needs to be made first?? i was playing around with Magento for the first time for another job, and right out of the box it made sense (but i can also see what it lacks, that OSC4 has) i think the key to success here is setup and learning time, if only experienced devs. can mod stores it narrows who can afford to build a websites using it (when there are so many basic ecommerce stores around with quick diy setups) if uses cannot mod easy, it may be more important to have more out of box themes and stuff to get going?
  4. my thinking is to just make a long ass youtube video guide, stating with a blank canvas and setting up a new store as a new user would. inc. a theme build and adding products. then you can time link, or cut out sections to answer sub questions or link back in the wiki. this will then generate new questions over missing help areas in times, and a new update video can be made addressing those at a later time. youtube is good platform because you can go back and update, link and annotate the video
  5. thanks for your reply, to clarify i am not saying the old code way is better... i am saying this new method is very hard to use and understand. and i have a decent i.t background, but i am still getting stuck. i may figure things out eventually. other people wont . for example there are multiple parts of the admin pages you need to go back and forth from to build a theme, the editor, the menus, the catalogue etc. setting owners and attributes then finding its not working on the preview. personally i am stuck right now.
  6. it should be more user friendly not just just for devs. (WP simple) after all, if a person cannot customise their store it wont be useable for them. and a large share of users will be DIY people the old OSC was easy to tweak and the design was simple to understand after playing around for a bit, but i have spent a few days testing on this new layout and its VERY hard to understand what is going on this is why i recommended an old OSC layout theme as a bridging example
  7. thanks for the reply, just to confirm are you saying the "breadcrumb" widget is needed for the "category" widget to display correctly? i have not had issue to getting the breadcrumb to work, but when i click though the category's they dont show the location trail like the old version did ?
  8. i cannot understand how to then add it into the theme or front end? as a list like layout like the old OSC when i got it kind of working, it would only show the top and sub level but not the deeper current product cat. the stores i work on have LOTS of CATS. and sub sub sub cats. to break down parts and products, the the simple stock themes i cant find a work around i can understand to use. thanks
  9. i tried to install the "smartwatch" theme but it always fails. not sure why? also i would be very helpful from a design and edit perspective to have a stock theme that is very close to the original ecommerce layout (so the widgets and parts are easy to understand) why i suggest this, is to help with migration from an old store to a new one. i have found with testing, its very hard to compare and duplicate all the functions as to not start from scratch the main issue i have right now is, categories. so for example... home > furniture > office > sitting > chairs home > furniture > office > sitting > chairs > folding home > furniture > office > sitting > chairs > wheels home > furniture > office > sitting > stools home > furniture > office > sitting > bench if i have a store with many many sub cats. i cannot figure out how to load the cat map/trail to show like old OSC, so the customer knows where they are or can click around on any page and how to load the product listing while using that menu (again basically like old OSC) the new theme seem to use a totally different map?
  10. to be clear, not the empty ROW, the space between ROWS
  11. cannot figure this one out, if anyone can help? if i add the TEXT widget , and add a table with 5x3 cells with text inside, i cannot work our the correct way change and reduce the row spacing (the cell spacing \ cell padding ) i would like to add or remove the empty space between rows.
  12. https://wiki.oscommerce.com/index.php?title=Design_Technologies_and_Creating_Theme if you find anything else please share it in this post. i am finding it very hard to figure out (learn) how the new themes and layout works. where things are, what does what. etc. i will figure it out (but i feel others wont) i really think its important for devs. to focus help content like how to videos on the subject, even if its a simple screen cap. of doing stuff so people can reference it. without people being able to mod the looks of their site they wont use it. i will try share what i can learn, and leave a end user guide to help the next person if i can. (no disrespect intended, just feedback)
  13. quick question, cannot seem to find the answer what is the correct way to edit or change the "banner" image say on watches theme i cannot seem to find the menu to do this? i would think in "edit widget" but there is no file info showing? thanks
  14. thanks for the reply, i can confirm the issue was space. but i got no warning? after checking the DIR, it unpacked some of the filesystem but not all. admin folder was missing. etc. started over with 2 gig free and it went ok. used 1.1gig with the install zip still in the folder a bit more feedback from the install would have been good.
