It is not difficult to do and it depends on who is hosting your website. In the example of a Yahoo store the electronic gateway that enables you to charge merchants is already bundled into the cost of the program. For other website they allow you to pick the gateway provider. Usually the gateway provider will also offer a merchant account, but these can be done separately. First Data is the largest processor of on-line Visa/MasterCard transactions and many merchant banks and other companies utilize them. Some companies include Authorizenet, Yourpay, Versign etc.

Costs and plans vary and and it often difficult to compare apples to apples.
