Photoshop's save for web. You can adjust the levels first and then most images benefit from using unsharp mask.

Yes, I use that as well.. So far, so good.. I haven't had any problems with it, and the quailty still remains great!

I use either Adobe Photoshop of Image Ready. You can create "droplets" which is basically an automated process which you can use to compress your pics, or do anything else you want, ALL AUTOMATICALLY!
All you do is create the droplet with the action(s) you want it to do, save it to your desktop, then drag your folder of files onto it, and a few seconds later you have a whole new folder of optimized files.
Really a timesaver.
