I think the bigest factor in load time is optimizing graphics

i am in the process of updating all the images for my site

this is very easy to affect using most image editors you can save image for the web i use a setting of 30% quality for jpeg and set it to 72 dpi as this is how most monitors have their dp

if you want to batch process exiting images a great free program is irfanview

http://www.irfanview.com/

use the gzip compression this will compress the html /php and improve load time

and also how many percentage people still using 56K ?
More than you might think. Out in the country there is often no other choice. Also what always surprizes me is that in and around San Jose, California (Silicon Valley) where a lot of the high tech hardware and software is developed, many people can't get broadband because the cable company still hasn't setup cable modem service and a lot of people are more than 3 miles from the phone company's central office so they can't get DSL. Two way satellite broadband is still kind of pricey for most people.

In olden times the men were made of iron and the ships were made of wood; now it's the other way around.
