What happened to responsive OsCommerce?

Guest

Recommended Posts

I've just installed Oscommerce using my host's Softaculous version and discovered its only 2.2. I previously downloaded Responsive-osCommerce 2.3.4 Gold but finding the easy way I used it!!

If someone can tell me firstly  IF I can upgrade 2.2 to 2.3.4 responsive and then give me a tip or two on doing it, I'd be most grateful. I've gone through the process of securing the site and uploading my logo but not yet (thankfully) installed and products or payment info.

Thanks in Advance.

If you want the latest bootstrap community version it can be downloaded here

http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/topic/396152-bootstrap-3-in-234-responsive-from-the-get-go/

As to why this has never been officially adopted by HPDL I have no idea. The question has been asked many times, but no one has ever replied.

For what its worth, the latest community version is still being worked on and updated, and addons are still being created, whilst the official 2.3.4 version is dead in the water, as it should be. There was talk a while back about work commencing on a new version, but that seems to have stalled as well in typical oscommerce fashion.

Download and install the community version and use that.

My server's Softaculous offers 2.3.4, so your host is way behind on all their offerings (way backlevel Softaculous).

As for what Harald is doing, all I can do is speculate, as he says nothing. It appears to me that he keeps all development in his own hands, and doesn't even have a group of trusted lieutenants to share development efforts with. This is NIH (Not Invented Here) factor taken to unhealthy levels. Apparently he fears losing control of his precious child. I presume he has a full time job and can only devote limited time to osC. An bug-fix update to 2.3.4 (2.3.5) was promised a while back, but nothing has been released yet. 2.4 is finally in beta, but given the past history of osC release schedules, I would count on waiting literally years to see it as the official release. The market will not wait that long. The only live osC release (2.3.4BS Edge) is found on nobody's distribution, because it's unofficial.

I'm not trying to diss Harald here, but I must point out that his behavior is slowly killing osCommerce. The outside world expects a major release at least every 12 months, and considers anything slower to mean that the product is basically dead. That's what all the reviewers say, that's all that potential users see, that becomes the official obituary. Harald may well be working on 2.3.5 and 2.4 at a good clip, but you simply cannot go years between refreshes. 2.3.4 is coming up on three years since the last peep, and is considered dead. Maybe Harald just wants to put too much new stuff in each release -- if so, he should learn to release smaller updates at more frequent intervals (but not weekly, like the short-lived 2.3.3.x series).

HPDL has done wonderful work over the years for osC, but he has to realize that he's killing it with his behavior, or at least, keeping it a minor niche player for hobbyists to play with, rather than a serious tool for storeowners.

Hmmm. And all I wanted was to know if 2.3.4 responsive could be used to update 2.2!

Well... I ditched the Softaculous version and installed edge 2.3.4. The theme needs some work but at least I've got an installation I can use. Thanks to no one but myself!

Good work Doug.

Glad you are taking the praise all for yourself. What about giving praise and thanks to those that took the time to code it, and keep it updated and to those that created the addons that you will no doubt use. They do it all in their free time with no reward.

With a Trump-sized ego like that, don't be surprised if you don't get a lot of enthusiastic help on this forum.

@@MrPhil I agree with you 1000000000000000%.

Arhhh ... To Mr Phil and Manfred.

The original question (I thought) was pretty simple. Can I upgrade 2.2 to 2.3.4?

When someone replies using my request for help as an opportunity to give the developer a massive slap in the face... Where I come from that is simply rude. My reply congratulating myself was to let Phil know that I didn't take kindly to being told osCommerce was so far out of date I was pretty much wasting my time hoping to upgrade the Softaculous version.

That is an opinion I don't share. The politics of open source software is not and never was something that should be voiced in a forum supposedly dedicated to discussions about installation of the software. Nothing at all wrong with my ego. I've never used a request for help to dump on the software being asked for help with. BTW Manfred... Your reply to my later request for help was wrong. I fixed that myself too. If this were a newsgroup, you and Mr Phil would be branded trolls.

Well, that's an interesting definition of "troll". If that's the definition in this day and age of Trumpian alternative facts, then I'm proud to wear the label "troll". Don't expect to ever get any help from me again. I tried to be helpful, useful, and above all, professional in what I said, and you're having a hissy fit. Good bye.

I don't know what was wrong, but you are rude and we are a forum for help and not a newsgroup. You can be happy, that the admins here very calm, in some other forum there will kick you out for to be rude like you; and BTW: I tried to help you, but you are still rude.

Don't expect to ever get any help from me again. Bye Bye!!!

@@MrPhil cool we are both trolls, so we can do magic... ;-)
