Donki
Can one sell files (zip, rar, etc.), photos with osCommerce, e.g. with different resolutions, aspect ratio, extensions / formats. e.g. jpg, raw, png, tiff, bmp, etc.?
MrPhil
osC will handle downloadable products (use the Super Download Store add-on for better results). As for all the different attributes, take a look at "product attributes". You may need an add-on or two to get it the way you want. If you plan to have a lot of product attributes, at some point it may be better to have several products for each image, with fewer attributes. Play around with it and see what's most comfortable. Be sure to use the 2.3.4BS Edge version. It is mobile-ready out of the box and is much more up to date than plain 2.3.4.
Donki
Many thanks, Phil. use the Super Download Store add-on for better results). It does not appear to be in development anymore, since 5 years no update: http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/4868 Be sure to use the 2.3.4BS Edge version. It is mobile-ready out of the box and is much more up to date than plain 2.3.4. Oops, I didn't know there are forks (if it is one) or at least one existing. So, 2.3,4 is not out of the box ready for some devices, I would have supposed that's a standard nowadays, absolutely necessary. But, do all of the add ons working for the plain version also work with the Edge version? So as I have to adapt / set up osCommerce for the German market, there will be a lot of work to do, I guess, so "out of the box" for all devices regarding the display would be good. Many thanks, again
MrPhil
Yes, 2.3.4BS is a fork (community-supported) on this site. There's a stable "Gold" version, and an up-to-date "Edge" version. The owner of osC (Harald) should have adopted it as version 2.3.5 long ago, so there would be no confusion about what is the "latest and greatest" osC release. Unfortunately, he chose to keep saying, "osC 2.4 is just around the corner, it will be released Real Soon Now". It seems that's been going on for a couple of years now. I'm not holding my breath for a General Release of 2.4 any time soon, even if Harald honestly thinks it's just about ready. Some of the "plain" add-ons work with the "BS" version, and many will require minor tweaks to work. 2.3.4BS has been out long enough that there are a lot of add-ons which work with it now. You just will have to do some digging to find out what. There may be a German language add-on for "BS" already. I was unaware that Super Download was not being worked on recently. I still see it recommended for anyone planning to sell downloads, but I don't know if it still works with 2.3.4BS. If it has any user-interface code, it will probably need to be updated to work with Responsive.
Donki
Alright, so this is the right 2.3.4BS Edge version to download, I assume (the last link at the bottom): http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/topic/404711-234-gold-edge-24/ And - as I am not the greatest brainiac - the "Gold" version is described as being easier to handle, may be I should / could use that one. But, I assume, as you say to use the "Edge" version, the "Gold" version has one or more (big) drawbacks. Some of the "plain" add-ons work with the "BS" version, and many will require minor tweaks to work. 2.3.4BS has been out long enough that there are a lot of add-ons which work with it now. You just will have to do some digging to find out what So, just look at the title / description of the add-ons or install and test it to find out if it will work? There may be a German language add-on for "BS" already. Yes, there are, so can I use such language packs not being made for the "Edge" version without risk (or can trying it cause damage?): http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/9391 or http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/9112 I was unaware that Super Download was not being worked on recently. I still see it recommended for anyone planning to sell downloads, but I don't know if it still works with 2.3.4BS. If it has any user-interface code, it will probably need to be updated to work with Responsive. So I would have to try it and if it does not work just uninstall it. ♥14steve14
There is no real need to use the super download store addon now, unless there are features there that you specifically require ie group downloads. The standard download system works fine on my store. REMEMBER BACKUP, BACKUP AND BACKUP
Donki
Alright, so I can try it with the standard system, thank you.
MrPhil
The "Edge" version has had continued development, and is more up to date than "Gold". Most users have reported no "bleeding edge" problems with Edge, and that it is safe to use for production. If you run into problems, report them and they should be fixed pretty quickly. As with any new installation, you should play with it for a while before opening it up to the public, and make sure it's working right for you. If there's not a separate Edge version of an add-on, but there is a Gold version, it's usually safe to assume that the Gold version will work on Edge. If not, you can always back out the language. Or, you can compare the German file to the latest English file, and translate and add anything missing. Just always take a backup before trying an add-on, so you can easily back out changes -- that way there's really no way to "damage" your store. If the Super Download stuff is now built in to 2.3.4BS, that's great. What it did was to add some convenience features and some protections against customers being able to access the downloads before payment was complete (read the SDS documentation to see exactly what, and the 2.3.4BS documentation to see what is built into the newest version). Note that "Gold" and "Edge" are not normal osC nomenclature... 2.3.4BS is a community-supported fork, not an official offering (though it is far better than the plain 2.3.4). For things like add-ons, there is no field to show a difference between Gold and Edge versions (or plain and BS, for that matter), so you need to read the documentation to see if it says anything on the subject. Yes, and / or I could use a second install (on the server or / and XAMPP) just for testing. If the Super Download stuff is now built in to 2.3.4BS, that's great. What it did was to add some convenience features and some protections against customers being able to access the downloads before payment was complete (read the SDS documentation to see exactly what, and the 2.3.4BS documentation to see what is built into the newest version) Alright, I will do so. Note that "Gold" and "Edge" are not normal osC nomenclature... 2.3.4BS is a community-supported fork, not an official offering (though it is far better than the plain 2.3.4). I thought, each osCommerce / version the add-ons, etc.would have been developed / maintained by the community / Harald (which belongs to the community) and / or some teams or so. Alright, so then I should prefer rather the Edge version than the Gold version (respectively than any other version). Unbelievable, it already is complicated before I have started using osCommerce at all. Just to find out which version / add-ons one can / should use.
