Can't Login To Admin Panel

Recommended Posts

Hi,

A few days ago, out of the blue, I was unable to login to my admin panel anymore. My credentials that were set to remember for years without issue, suddenly didn't work anymore. Every time I enter the username and password, it just keeps bringing the password box back up over and over. When I finally try to cancel out of there, I am shown this 401 error message:

Authorization Required

This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required.

It doesn't matter what browser I try on, or even my cell phone, I cannot get in. Funny enough, when I asked my webmaster who also has the password, she can get in just fine. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary, but I have been having some computer space issues, so not sure if that has anything to do with it. I've been getting a disk space full message, and told I need to make room on my hard drive. Still, I don't know if that would affect me being able to login to this admin panel.

Does anyone have any idea what I should do? I have contacted the host who hasn't even gotten back to me yet, and I had my internet provider do some cleaning up on my computer but the problem persists. I need to be able to get into my admin so I can access my orders. I can't keep asking my webmaster to go in and check things for me!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd bet your IP Address got blocked and you'd have to get it unblocked. If your webmaster can get in with the same login info and you cannot, most likely your IP Address got blocked somehow.

If fixing the IP issue doesn't help then maybe can try going through something like cPanel or your hosting company to get into your public_html/admin/includes/configure.php file. In there you can change your username and password to your database to something new to see if that helps. Once you do that don't forget to refresh your browser cache and refresh your cPanel as well. The reason I suggest changing them to your database is because most every thing in your admin panel goes through your database.

Look for and change your username and password:

// define our database connection
define('DB_SERVER', 'localhost);
define('DB_SERVER_USERNAME', 'what-ever-yourusername-is');
define('DB_SERVER_PASSWORD', 'what-ever-your-password-is');

The define for the db server can be ('DB_SERVER', '127.0.0.1'); as well.

I forgot to mention earlier that if your webmaster added something like the IP Trap (or something similar) and didn't whitelist your IP Address, you'll get blocked everytime you try to access sensitive areas or sensitive files. If they did make any changes, just tell them to whitelist your IP Address. If all else fails you can do a backup (if you made one) and restore it to when it last worked.

@@ecommunlimited,

Thank you so much for your response. It definitely makes sense that I may have been blocked. To be honest, I haven't had to enter a password in years as I have it remembered at login. Then when it suddenly asked me for the login again, I entered the wrong thing a few times before I clarified with my webmaster, and then finally entered the right info which no longer was working. She said they may have locked the account for several hours, so the next day I logged in and got in successfully, however when I had to log in again, that was it, it never worked again. Something is definitely weird.

I also changed my windows administrator password because shortly before that, it asked me for that as well (as I said my computer was having issues because of low disk space). Do you think the server realized that the password was different and doesn't consider me an administrator anymore so won't let me in? If so, how would I update this information?

I am in the process of switching to another shopping cart anyway as this version of OSCOmmerce that we have is sooo old and instead of the hassle of updating to a new one, I chose to go with another cart that has a more up to date look about it. Point being, that I don't want to go through any process involving a lot of re installing or anything like that because it's not worth it for the short amount of time I will be using this cart. Bummer is, in the meantime I still need to be able to access my orders and back end!

Thanks again for your advice!

Your welcome.

Definitely, if you attempt to login with the wrong login info to many times (usually 3) it will block you. Happened to me more than once.

As far as the "windows administrator password" I don't see that as being an issue unless your running your site from a local machine (your personal computer's server). If your with a hosting company and NOT hosting it yourself on your computers server, I would guess that isn't the problem. At least not the problem for your admin login. But I am not a Windows expert, I just don't see that as plausible.

osCommerce is a beautiful shopping cart, you should checkout the new osCommerce v2.3.4 Bootstrap Responsive. The Edge version is what I use and, I believe the .zip file is called Responsive-osCommerce-master. It's easy to get to know and learn, functions beautifully and a lot of it has become modular. Installing the newer addons has become super simple and can be configured in a multitude of ways. One of the best thins about it, it's mobile ready. You can go to Github and get an update version at: https://github.com/gburton/Responsive-osCommerce.

Do you think it blocked me permanently? My webmaster said usually it is a temporary period like 24 hours or something. Maybe I just messed it up so many times it thinks I'm a hacker. I hope it's something as simple as just unblocking me.

Although this is a home computer as I run my business from home, it is hosted by an actual host (Beco Technologies). I have emailed him again now as they had not responded before.

At the time (almost a year ago now), I was going to upgrade to the newest version of os commerce but the test site we had to work with was very much similar to the old one I was on (over a decade old). It just didn't have the look and feel I was going for, so I switched to Big Commerce. It has taken me a looong time to get this site the way I want it to look, but I love it now. I did take a look at the sample site for the new oscommerce. I'm not sure if I am looking at the right thing (a test shop selling computer things), but it looks pretty similar to the old os commerce. Anyway, at this point, I have done too much work to switch again! :)

Oh, I just had another thought. I am going to go to my neighbour's house and see if I can login from their computer. If so, the problem is definitely on my end only. I will update as soon as I hear anything.

When your blocked like that it's 24 hours or less. I got back in mine in about 3 hours.

I understand you're happy with Big Commerce but if you seen a demo of osCommerce and it looks like the old version you went to the wrong demo site. Below is a link just to check out to see that difference between the old and new versions. It gives you an idea of some of the features you can add to your shop. With the new osC people can have all of the new addons, or less if they choose. That's the beauty of it. The link below comes from an addon called Upcoming Products. It was put out by FrankStanza.
