Admin login keeps locking up / lagging

G'day all, I've got an odd problem that has just recently cropped up - occasionally when I try to login, it lags and won't allow me in. When I go into cpanel, i see 4-5 entry processes running. I've got bootstrap gold and logging into admin has been no problem at all until just recently. Eventually it logs in. I've had it work fine but 30 mins later it can have the same issue again.

The only change made to the site is altering the stock.php page so my SKUs/Model numbers can include letters as well as numbers - but that's it.

There are no cron jobs at all and it's just happened on a store with the most minimal web traffic ever. Also - when this happens, the front of the site works normally, unlike when there is a DDOS attack and the front lags out too - whenever this has happened the catalog end is fine.

Does anyone have any idea how to diagnose this kind of issue? Perhaps someone else has experienced this?

The first thing I'd do is to confirm that it is in fact your server, and not your browser, that's bogging down. See if you have the same problem on a PC and browser that hasn't been used for admin access.

Then, round up the usual suspects: did you make any changes anywhere just before the problem started? Did your host make any changes just before the problem started? Have you checked the "last modified" timestamps on your site files to make sure some hacker hasn't done something to them, or added any files to the site?

@@MrPhil - it's definitely not just me as live help on the host couldn't get in either for a period (to my admin).

No changes (other than mentioned above). The host hasn't owned up to any but I still have them looking into things on their side, it's very intermittent. Nothing has been added to the site.
