Upgrade from osC 2.3.4 to osC2.3.4(r) GOLD

I am new to osCommerce so I am taking it rather slowly.

1. I downloaded osCommerce v2.3.4 Full Package and installed it.

2. I read and followed the installation and configuration guide.

     a. Installation went quite smoothly.

     b. Have some configuration issues.

         i. I wanted to display my products in a grid and not a list.

ii. I wanted customers to be able to make purchases from mobile devices.

After some research I realized that I needed to upgrade to osC2.3.4 GOLD.  I downloaded it from a link in this forum.

Can someone tell me, can I upgrade from v2.3.4 to 2.3.4 GOLD or do I have to start all over from scratch?

Is there additional installation and configuration documentation for it?

3. Other Issues that I haven't been able to figure out how to fix.

    a. My store header is very short (the category bar is overlaying my company icon)  and my store name is missing.

    b. I want to add another button to the "Cart Contents", "Checkout", amd "my Account" buttons.

    c. My store footer only contains the osCommerce logo and I can't figure out how to change it.

    d. I need my store category bar color to be a different color for continutity purposes.

Like I said, "I am new to osCommerce so I have a lot of questions about configuring my osCommerce store."

Any help or references/links where I can determine how to fix these things is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim

Welcome... it would probably best to start with a fresh install of the 2.3.4 BS gold, assuming you haven't got a live shop at the moment.

The modules are easier to install and there are many BS modules available now, which might help with your requirements.

hope this helps

There is no "upgrade" as such, from 2.3.4 to 2.3.4BS (Gold or Edge). You have to do a complete installation. However, if you have loaded up your product database already in 2.3.4, you should be able to migrate (upgrade) the database to the new version (2.3.4BS) without having to reload everything manually. If you just have a few test items, it would be easier to start over from scratch and load in all the products, rather than trying to salvage the old database.

You should probably hold off on the rest of your questions until you have the Responsive version (Gold or Edge) installed. I recommend Edge as it now has a lot of advantages over Gold, so there will be less you will need to install afterwards. In Edge, most questions are answered by installing a module.

  • 3 months later...

I finally was able (time wise) remove osC2.3.4 and install osC2.3.4® GOLD.

I have populated the catalog and i believe that I have completed a major portion of the configuration.

I have read throught the forum and I haven't found answers to my problems.  It is more than likely I can't see the forest for the trees.

My problems are as follows:

1. I haven't been able to figure out how to add header and footer html files to my store.

2. The left hand column goes from the top of the page to the bottom of the page. the only thing is the right hand column is the shopping cart title link rather than an icon and a list of items in my shopping cart.

3. I want to add to the left hand column a link to my home page.

4. I need to have a continue shopping button that takes the customer back to the grid showing my products.

5. I want to also add a button from other pages where I add items to their shopping cart.

Any recommended links or readings where I can figure out what I need to do would appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Answers (where I know them):

  1. Log into your Admin, then go to Modules -> Content. Click the Install button and pick the modules you want.
  2. Not a question.
  3. That's not the usual location -- it's normally in the Logo and/or the Breadcrumb trail. You may need a bit of custom code.
  4. Search this forum for "continue shopping button". There are several solutions, including a drop-in module.
  5. What other pages? What products? Needs more info.

Jim,

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction regarding the #1 ( Modules -> Content.) and #3 regarding a link to my home page. I still have some work to do with adding a link to my home page and the continue shopping button.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear about #5, adding a button from other pages where customers can add items to their shopping cart.  On my site I have pages where customer and fans of individual products of mine can purchase them from retail locations.  I want to add to those pages a link to where they add the items to a shopping cart and continue shopping from there.

Thanks,

Tim

Do you mean pages outside osCommerce? That can be done, but it's dangerous. Customers clicking on one of those links can lose session and their cart contents. I generally don't recommend that.

If your customer is only going to click a link once, then do their shopping only inside osCommerce, then this is not an issue. I recommend using the URL for the product page and let your customer buy from there. If you  want to add the product directly, look at the URL generated by the Add to Cart button on the product page, but be aware that this will only work for products without attributes/options.

Can I ask a silly question. Why did you decide to use the Gold version and not the edge version? The edge version contains more features and has been updated to contain the latest code. The edge version is where all new code is added, rather than the gold version.

REMEMBER BACKUP, BACKUP AND BACKUP

It's reasonable that someone seeing "Gold" (stable) and "Edge" (unstable) would choose the stable Gold release. They probably don't want to risk having bad things happen due to use of an unstable code release. If 2.3.4BS were to live on for a long time, it would certainly be appropriate for Burt to have a number of stable releases -- say, Gold, Silver (next oldest), and Bronze (oldest). It's not reasonable to keep older versions. It's also not reasonable to not have reasonably stable recent versions available, while allowing Edge to be unstable and Leading/Bleeding Edge.

As 2.4 is vaporware until it actually appears in the main release channel, Burt should think about having some more recent, yet reasonably stable, 2.3.4BS releases available. This is not to say that older stable releases should not be patched if there is a serious problem, but they should be left alone as much as possible.

As Jim said, you will likely lose your session and cart if you move in and out of osCommerce (mixing it with non-osC pages). It should be possible to modify the rest of your site to add code to preserve the osC session, cart, cookies, etc. no matter where you go on your site, but I don't know if it's been tried. If you have another application, such as a forum or blog, it too will try to own the whole site and conflict with osC. osC was designed to own the entire site, rather than being just a component, and like most applications, doesn't play well with others. People have modified osC to share a common login with other applications; I would assume that they tweaked the code to keep a common session, etc. throughout the site, but I can't tell you for sure.

Perhaps the developers should think about pulling session, cookie, login, etc. out into some independent modules, which could be replaced or updated to permit sharing with other applications? At the least, the affected code would all be in one place if you want to modify it. Maybe someday there will be a universal standard for shared applications, and osC and other applications will simply work when dropped into a site, without having to futz with the code.

Really Happy with my 234 Gold, plenty of addons. Now I am dealing with my last challenge: points and rewards.

A couple of years I decides to move from 2333 to this versión for a reason mentioned above, stability, since I am not a coder. Also it is much easier (at least for me) to install and make adaptations older add-ons, so I have much more tools availables.

I don't know very much about Edge, but as I've seen, it has lot of changes that make harder for me to make this adaptations of old add-ons.

Shopowner, not coder, experienced copypaster  :D
