@@vampirehunter  I think it was in the 29daysofcode that Gary developed and that would be a good opportunity to help support the development work. :)

Have a look though those addons.

out of interest, you say you have only added this recaptcha to the contact page, is there a reason you don't have it on anything else? ie the create_account page? would that be harder to implement with your module?

Turned into a nice little function, a math (or other) reCAPTCHA would be a useful thing to drop into other pages where you want to exclude bots, such as registration/account creation pages. Go for it! I think I'll add it to my forum registration page, as it's still getting a lot of spammers. I suspect that most of them are bots, as while they are successfully registering (getting past the forum's graphical CAPTCHA), they are getting hung up on another feature and not successfully posting.

You might want to think about a parameter to make the reCAPTCHA behave a little differently when used in different places on your site, so that cracking it one place won't work anywhere else.

I've been using the Honeypot code in lieu of googles recaptcha for about a year and it works great with nothing needed from the user. It sounds like google has adopted that code. They do describe their new version as falling back to the "I'm not a robot" method if the user is suspect, though I can't find what determines that. I switched to Honeypot because googles recaptcha required many tries to get through and visitors were complaining about it. Hopefully their invisible version will work better.

No reason why it can't be added to other pages.  JUst find the similar pieces of code in (say) create_account as per the instructions for contact_us...

Email me if you need more help than this.

What? I have no idea what you just said.

I now detest reCAPTCHA v2... I never pass it on the first test. Sometimes not on the second or third, either. For example "click on squares with a street sign". OK, that apparently includes traffic signs (not just signs labeling streets). Sometimes it seems to include the post/shaft, sometimes not. Sometimes it seems to include border fringes, sometimes not. I'm not sure this is done with human intervention, or is automated image processing.Either way, it doesn't work all that well.

I don't know anyone else who *regularly* gets as far as having to choose streetsigns.

Is your browser setup a bit weird (choice of browser, js off, anything else)?

In any case, the good thing is that you could elect to use a Maths captcha, or Googles (but with audio).  Options, options.

You could (assuming the effort is worth it, and you find customers complaining) update the form code to swap out the Google captcha for the Maths captcha, based on a user selected radio button?

@@MrPhil I agree. I get challenged quite regularly with recaptcha and is why I stopped recommending it. The new version, which I haven't tried, uses a hidden method to check for spammers. This works great in the Honeypot code. I suspect that is the method google is now using. With this other method available, there should not be any reason to have a customer enter something.

I'm getting "choose the squares with a street sign" almost every time. I wonder if someone dropped a cookie to make me use one that has proven "challenging". Do I get challenged with pictures to choose because I clicked something I shouldn't have at the start of the reCAPTCHA process? Should I NOT be clicking "I'm not a robot"?

These are not sites that I have any control over (e.g., a whois server), so I can't get it changed. My browser is ordinary Firefox, latest version, JS on, nothing unusual or non-stock.

I'm about ready to find another whois site (that's the worst one for me).

I usually get challenged because I'm in the habit of using my browser in incognito mode (to stop that damned Google Ads spy from following me around).

Is there a community add-on available for Recaptcha V2 ?  Thanks!

Gary has one available for a modest cost....the good thing is you'll not only get a module that is super easy to install but you'll be helping to support the ongoing development of osC.   A win, win....have a look here.

Either they've changed something in reCAPTCHA v2, or I've gotten better at the timing of clicks (or whatever), as I'm now rarely challenged with a puzzle. I still wonder how blind people deal with this -- are the alternatives satisfactory? How about people who can't use a mouse? Even worse are those puzzles where you have to move image fragments around to assemble a picture -- I can't imagine how someone with vision or mobility problems (unable to use a mouse) is going to be able to handle those. Anyway, the bottom line is make sure your attempts to keep out bots don't end up discriminating against the handicapped, much less blocking large numbers of non-handicapped people because the puzzle is too visually cluttered and difficult to see. At best, you'll lose a lot of customers or participants; at worst, you'll be facing legal action for discrimination.

I think that it's a lost cause to try to build a foolproof anti-bot hard shell around a system. The bots have gotten so good that it's harder to get in for people than bots. By randomly selecting challenge elements so that bots can't be built to handle a blocking page, at least not without a tremendous amount of AI, such a defense might be useful for a bit longer. That still doesn't help against farms of Third World peasants just doing account signups all day. More effort is going to have to go into looking at the content of posts/messages and the behavior of new members, to weed out what appears to be spam (certain keywords, swapping numbers and symbols for letters, excessive number of links, large number of posts right after signup, etc.). Continuing to challenge users for their first few posts (rather than just at signup) is also helpful.

Hello and thanks in advance. I installed the module in responsive oscommerce and it throws me the following error, someone can help me.

PHP Warning:  file_get_contents(): https:// wrapper is disabled in the server configuration by allow_url_fopen=0 in /home/sexynet/public_html/includes/classes/recaptcha.php on line 70

Sorry for my English.

As the error message says,

Quote

PHP Warning:  file_get_contents(): https:// wrapper is disabled in the server configuration by allow_url_fopen=0 in ... [where file_get_contents() is called]

Your server is configured to not allow this operation (for security reasons). You might be able to set allow_url_fopen=1; in your php.ini file or equivalent. Ask your host how to do this, especially if you don't already have a php.ini file set up.
