BrockleyJohn
That addon is reliable. I've used various versions of it on several stores, and it does what it says. Regards Jim Indeed it does - and a bit more than it says, too. The setup of the latest version loads a list that bans almost every bot I've ever heard of except for the major search engines... probably a bit of overkill, but much better than having a site that loads like treacle. Anyway, you could adjust the list before install, or delete any afterwards in admin that you want to allow. The biggest wrinkle I'm aware of with this addon is I've never managed to find a support thread - someone may know better, but if you have trouble setting it up you may be best off asking for help in your own thread here, which seems to have attracted plenty of interest. As I recall, you need to be a bit careful with the install - make sure you run the database install script before applying the updates or your store will stop running altogether, and I think it has hard-coded ids for the config variables so you need to check they won't clash with anything already loaded. Once in, though, seems pretty solid. Contact me for work on updating existing stores - whether to Phoenix or the new osC when it's released. Looking for a payment or shipping module? Maybe I've already done it. Steve80
Great. Thanks for the input. Yesterday, I finally caught a moment when no one was on the site and finished the 'backupdate' to return the site to the way it was before I started all this mess. Today it seems to be as fast as it's ever been although there are still times when the page load is SLOW .. for whatever reason. Mostly, the pages all load in under 2 seconds. I did run across something though....Hmmm... Guess I'll start a new thread for that though. I'll look over the addon after a bit of rest B) Steve
♥kymation
There are several known problems with osCommerce 2.2MS2. For one, the database is missing indexes on some fields that really need them. That slows down certain database queries. There's a thread on here somewhere about optimizing that code to speed it up. However, from my memories of doing this years ago, updating to the current version would be less work and give better results. Regards Jim Understand that upgrading is the "correct" answer, but I have installed (or paid someone to install) several mods for SEO improvement. I can't imagine having to go through all that again.. It was like 6 MONTHS of work. I also spent QUITE SOME TIME coming up with a way to present the Categories box the way my client wanted it to be. The mere thought of going through all that again gives me a horrible headache! I could HOPE that the new version would already have everything I need in it, but have no way to KNOW that is the case. With the small amount of knowledge that I have, it takes me DAYS and DAYS of work to accomplish what a 'guru' could do in an hour - but finding those guru's is difficult at best. ♥kymation
There's an easy way to know what the current version already has -- Install a copy in a subdirectory and play with it. Import your products/categories so it looks similar. The 2.3.4 download is here and the Bootstrap Gold release is available here. The Edge release is only for people who don't mind lots of patches, so probably not for you. Regards Jim See my profile for a list of my addons and ways to get support.
