MrPhil
You "upgrade" by installing a fresh osC 2.3.4, and then importing your data from your old store (copy over images, copy and upgrade database). Don't even think of upgrading 2.2 to 2.3 -- it was a horrendous mistake to offer that upgrade, and it should be removed. Once you have your 2.3.4 test store running, you need to think about replicating any custom code in your old store, and looking for add-ons (contributions) to add special function. You might need in both cases to do some custom PHP and database work, as many changes are not directly transferable from 2.2 to 2.3. If all you want to do is modify the appearance of your new store, that's easier in 2.3 than 2.2 (see themeRoller), with more CSS and fewer PHP changes.
