ELI5: How do I get Email and Contact Us to work?

Guest

Recommended Posts

I am hosting this on my own server (Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS7 and PHP installed).  I have tried numerous things and of course before I tried anything at all I made a backup of the store so for all practical purposes this is a new install of oscommerce 2.3.4.

Both the Contact Us page and the "Send Email" function in the admin panel say "Success" when I use them however the emails are not arriving in my gmail account.

I have tried before doing anything at all because HEY maybe 2.3.4 email works out of the box?? NOPE!!

I have tried phpmailer.  Maybe I set it up wrong?

I have tried other tid bits of things I've found elsewhere as well.

Nothing seemed to work.  The thing I am afraid of is all the things I have found seemed to have been for older versions of oscommerce so maybe the steps to take were out of date and no longer apply.

So please, anyone that has gotten it to work with 2.3.4, please ELI5 how you did it.   (ELI5 = Explain Like I'm 5)

Thanks all.

(I've only worked with 2.3.3.4, but ... )

1) On a Windows server, unless you installed Sendmail, you need to change your email settings to SMTP. In the Admin section, go to: Configuration | E-Mail options.

2) You will probably have to specify your Mail Server URL, User Name, Password, and possibly the Port Number. You can set this in the php.ini file on your server, edit the 2 mail.php files in osCommerce (one on the store side, and one on the admin side), or install one of the add-ons that allow you to configure these through the admin section.

3) If the ISP that handles your email has spam filtering turned on, check your spam folder. I have found that most of the email I try sending from my store on my in-house Windows development server is flagged as spam.
