Hi,

I have a friend who is looking at setting up a dating site in a niche ex-pat area where she lives.

Is this something that OSC could be adapted for? and is anone aware of any osc sites that have been set up this way?

Many Thanks
Now my store is the way I want it - Secure, working well, and good Google Ranks - Thanks to all for the help given.

If you want to see the mods I have installed, then see my profile.

Unless your friend wants to sell mail-order brides or such, I'd say osCommerce is not the correct software.

Look at datemill.com

Or maybe a ready made theme for your shop ??

Ahh,

I was just thinking how to handle shipping issues, per weight maybe?

Attributes configuration is also interesting, e.g. blond/brunette or big nose/small nose etc

:)

We all have something here in common so we could work on adding a dating site to our website. (and release it as open source of course)

This is all so special....thank you Heather for planting the seed here that grew into all this.  :)
I am not a professional webmaster or PHP coder by background or training but I will try to help as best I can.
I remember what it was like when I first started with osC.  It can be overwhelming.
However, I strongly recommend considering hiring a professional for extensive site modifications, site cleaning, etc.
There are several good pros here on osCommerce.  Look around, you'll figure out who they are.

All joking aside, a dating site would share a few features with a shop. Both take payment (usually an up-front flat fee for a dating site, although some might charge per-match). Both do a search on "product" attributes (gender, age, appearance, interests, location, etc.), but I think you might want a somewhat "fuzzier" search than in a store (e.g., a woman searching for a man 5'8" to 6'0" might accept someone 5'7" if other attributes are a really good match). A dating site might have some sort of personal messaging for prospective dates to find out more about each other, while maintaining anonymity before committing to that first date. Finally, there has to be some sort of "product delivery" to both parties to get them together.

All said, while some of the osC product database and searching might be usable, I think that so much else would have to be changed or customized that osC (or any other general purpose shopping cart) would not be a good base. The search is the biggest, most proprietary part of any dating site, to get the best matches, and the osC search would probably be fairly primitive compared to what's needed.

@MrPhil

Let's keep things simple: Both, search and charge will be plain and simple by weight !

A man search for a 58kg woman, add her to cart. Same does the woman.

If both have each other in the cart, they get a match message, checkout button appear, they checkout and pay according to weight

Woman pay for 75kg man, man pay for 58kg woman the module exist already.

How about that ?

Well, the idea of everyone having a "cart" that they put prospective dates into is kind of interesting, but I don't think it would work out. I put Heather into my cart. It might be quite a while before she happens to put me into her cart. Not that I'm necessarily her 15th choice for a date, but she might not happen to be accessing the dating store for a while. In the mean time, I've found someone else and am dating her, but have forgotten to go back and put Heather back on the shelf... A practical system would have to have one person making the selection, and then the other person is quickly notified and decides if the first person is a reasonably good match for them, and let's arrange a dinner and a movie.

@MrPhil

Well, I was just joking, but lets keep thinking in this direction

Each user is automatically a product. Upon account creation user enters 2 types of info
1) Private info - that goes to the customers tables
2) Product info - that goes to the product tables

Once someone is added to somebody else cart, he'll receive a notification about that

Wow, such an announcement :)

I think all you need now is a "add to cart" button?

Now it's time for some personal info to make a proper checkout, please fill out the following form

----------
weight: [    ]
----------

(The system is a bit limited at the beginning, more features will be added, but weight is the most important for now, we need to configure shipping/payment)

I like this topic so much ! :)
