Hi,
In the admin window I can see the forty products I have created under a category. Yet in the window for customers one of the products does not appear. Instead another product is shown twice. I don't know what is causing this problem or how it can be resolved. If I set the product that appears twice "inactive" the product that originally did not appear comes into view. If I undo the "inactive" state I go back to the problem mentioned above. Thanking you for your help.

That is very odd, perhaps you LINKED the products together ?  I suggest deleting BOTH products and then re-entering them.
