The present 2.3.1 image system is not as good as it could be.
What i have done is to create two images the same. One is sized at 150 pixel wide and the other at 400 pixels wide wide. I add the small image first when adding the product, then add a large image. This seems to work. The small image is used where a small image is required and the large imge is used on the product info popup page. The large image is also resized to display on the product info page.

OSC has a steep learning curve, but in general the program does work. If it doesnt work, the chances are it is something you have done.
