Both does the job....

If you are a coder you will probably prefer: ULTIMATE Seo Urls 5 - by FWR Media

If you are not a coder then: Ultimate SEO 2-2.2d - by Chemo   , simply because its still being updated and supported.

Ultimate SEO 2-2.2d - by Chemo every time, used in conjunction with headertags_seo.

I am not a coder, so dont bother sending PMs asking for help as you wont get any.

OSC has a steep learning curve, but in general the program does work.  If it doesnt work, the chances are it is something you have done.

None of the above. They do nothing of value, and you end up spending a lot of time in installation, debugging, and maintenance that could be better spend doing something that will actually help your business, like writing better product descriptions.

i dont think that matters anymore with the way search engines crawl the sites. i see php sites all the time above html sites in search results when i look for things. i see php, asp, whatever. game has changed alot to be more site friendly then search engine friendly.

A lot about URLS is not SEO, it is about the shopowner and the customer.

What is easier to remember (vague example, but you get my drift)?
What is easier to advertise (eg in a leaflet/flyer/poster)?

site.com/product_info.php?products_id=55
or
site.com/product_55.html

SEO is a complete myth, and anyone who still offers SEO services is selling snake oil.

I would say the best SEO practice is to forget about it and to focus on real people

I mail a lot of printed material (catalog, advertising leaflet), it is visually easier on the customer to see an SEO url, as opposed to something like "products_info.php?products_id=1234".
The main reason being that an SEO url is easier to type in the browser bar and easier to remember.

I use Ultimate SEO Urls 5 Pro by FWR Media, in conjunction with KISSMT Dynamic SEO Meta & Canonical Header Tags, still by FWR Media.

The extension is irrelevant, osC seo packages use .html but it could be anything else (I use .asp by preference)

I believe keywords within the url, which is the real reason for using a package, is still relevant.

The differing opinions of those more in the know (far more than me for sure), is perplexing when it comes to SEO this or that, what works, what doesn't...all that.  Why such diverse opinions?

Is there not solid, substantiated data or studies out there that would show definitively the efficacy of various seo techniques and code.

I have SEO add on's installed.  I leave them in hopes they help at least a smidge with site traffic.

I'll continue to work on having customer/user friendly sites in hopes that if the search engine gods grant me a visitor, my visitor will like what they see, feel comfortable and secure while there, and can easily find/checkout/purhcase whatever they wanted.

And if something else comes along that shows promise to improve site traffic, I'll probably eventually install that as well.
I am not a professional webmaster or PHP coder by background or training but I will try to help as best I can.
I remember what it was like when I first started with osC.  It can be overwhelming.
However, I strongly recommend considering hiring a professional for extensive site modifications, site cleaning, etc.
There are several good pros here on osCommerce.  Look around, you'll figure out who they are.

i think i agree with lots of people above, the SEO packages offer url rewriting, which is nice for advertising links, and also in the litte summary that the potential customer sees as the keyword searched might be shown in the url and thus reinforce the idea that the link is a good resource for the particular keyword searched for.
and tend to think as kymation that that is not SEO, but rather usefull for the user/customer and not necessarily influences your position in the search engine, but rather the potential user clickthrough rate on the natural search result.

@bruyndoncx

I find that keywords in the uri do get picked up and it does make a difference. But no-one knows what Google's precise algorithm is, so any one saying only this works or don't do that is only guessing

@GoTTi

I answered that in the other thread you posted on this subject.

In my opinion there are no SEO "quick fixes" these days .. Google and the rest are very intelligent.

Things like SEO urls ( uris with meaningful text ) are still useful .. perhaps for minor SEO benefit but definately for the user ( the often forgotten but equally important optimisation ).

E.g I want to buy a red handbag .. do I click ..

product_whatever.php?loadsofguff=27&moreguff=36

or

red_handbag-p-27
