Hi Folks
I'm a total noob. So please be gentle. A client recently asked me to manually insert metatags onto product pages directly (just like his former web guy did). I can see that the product page is being called to the main area from a database using the variable cPath=4_28_11. My question is, I can see that this page is being assembled from many different locations in what appears to be an absolutely standard installation of OSC template/catalog. Where is the part that contains the header information for the product located so that I may directly apply meta tags? I understand it may be a file named header in the includes folder. Am I making any sense? Most people here are recommending software and SQL fixes. This client absolutely requires that I do this manually.

Then your client is making a big mistake. The titles and meta tags for each product need to be unique. If you have one product, then that is not a problem. If you have ten, it would be a pain but doable. If you have a hundred, it would be crazy to attempt that manually. And no matter how many you have, as soon as you add antoher, it would require another code change. Tell your client it should be done correctly by installing a meta tags contribution or don't bother with it since the way he wants is done is near to useless. I recommend Header Tags SEO but there are easier ones to install if you don't care much about the SEO'ing og the site.

Thank you for the quick reply. As my parameters are pretty much determined by the client. I really need to know how to do this manually so that I can secure his confidence. Once that is established, I'd be glad to move in a positive, less time intensive, direction. So, that said, can anyone tell me how this is done manually?

You can add normal meta tag code to the <head> section as you would with any html site.

OK. I'm aware this can be done. I may not have been clear. I'm trying to locate the page on which that HTML resides. I was told that it might be in a page entited header in a folder called includes, and that cPath=x_a_b is a variable that is basically saying these parts are included on the page. I'm trying to find those pieces and parts in a typical OSC installation so that I might add a simple HTML meta tag and win this short-term contract. Any help in the direction of how to locate the product page part in which I would add this tag is really what I'm looking for. I apologize if I was not clear on that.

The code for the product page is located in the product_info.php file. The code for the categories, which is the link you provided, is located in the index.php file.

Excellent! Thank you very much. This may be obvious once I have access to the files again, but does the <header> information reside in those files or am I just simply barking up the wrong tree due to misunderstanding. I ask because I do believe the client wants me to manually insert meta tag in the category as well. I really appreciate the response. I will let you know if I secure the project and then we'll move ahead with your other suggestion. Thanks again.

That's the problem. The index.php file is used for the home page. categories and manufacturers. That's why adding a fixed instance of the title and tags almost useless.

Instead of trying to add it manually into the files, you should rather install and use HEADER TAGS SEO
