Hi,
I'm not a noob, so, this should be easier.
I'm setting up a 2.2 site for a friend of mine in NM and, being from Canada, the multi-level "everybody gets a cut" sales tax scheme is rather daunting.
I was wondering if anyone in New Mexico might have an SQL dump of the Zone and Rate code that I could have or a procedure for inputting it that they could share. I haven't even counted the number of counties that this might entail. Or, if the information already exists somewhere, pointing me to it would be good too.
I'd be very grateful for any help anyone could give and I appreciate the trouble you probably went to setting it up.
Perhaps it would be wise to set up a repository of each state's Tax Mess for the benefit of people just starting out with osCommerce and facing the challenge of getting their state's tax info inputted.
They, in turn, could make any updates to the rates and post those as well.
Thanks, in advance, for any assistance rendered.
Richard

@Druid6900,
WHY ? v2.3.1 is MUCH better and SECURE !
As for the multi tax rates, the set up is very similar to Canada's GST, HST and shipping tax.

2.2 because it is a copy of my site and it's modded just the way I need it to get the job done.
Actually, most US state's tax setup is NOTHING like Canada's provinces. In Canada, you have a HST or PST/GST that is a single figure or, at most, two figures that you can apply to an entire province based on where you are located and where the buyer is located.
In New Mexico, for example, there is a state-wide tax, then each county, municipality, what have you, can add to that tax (and not the same amount in each case) so that you have about 60 counties some with the same percentage of tax, some with other percentages of tax (I'd say about 25 different tax rates in New Mexico) and some with no added taxes at all.
Now, it that wasn't good enough, different municipalities within a county can have different tax rates as well, so that, if you ship to city A, the tax rate is A%, city B is at B%, city C is at C% and the rest of the county is at D%
Fun, eh? But wait, it gets better. The taxes rates are only good for 6 months at a stretch and then any, all or none of the rates can change.
I don't know how anyone could carry on business like that, but, apparently they do.
Now you know why I asked if anyone would share their setup.

Thanks G,
I'm sure it will come in handy and, although I was trying to avoid having to do it all manually, it's beginning to look like that's the only way.
The worse thing is that, seeing as I am franchising out the operation to, at least, 5 more US regions, I'm going to have to do it for, again, at least, 5 more states.
It may be easier just to tell the franchisees that they can't sell in their own state LOL

I would be interested in how you get taxes by city/county as the address has a state and I am sure the residents know to mislead web sites to reduce their tax liability.
Even though I am on the other side of the pond I'll have a look at this.
Cheers

Well, if you look at the Florida tax rate contribution, you'll see that each place has a county name after it and the rate the county charges. IIRC, in Florida, the county rate is different, but, it's applied across the whole county, which makes the New Mexico one worse.
I believe you can get the NM tax rates by Zip Code, so, that may be the way to go. I just have to figure out how the explain it to the software LOL

OK, this looks like it's going to be a lot easier than I originally thought.
It seems, according to the NM Gross Receipts overview, that the "sales tax" is based upon the sellers location.
Where ever they ship to within the state is taxed at the business's home location tax rate ragardless of what the tax rate is at the destination.
That will certainly make life a lot easier and I hope that the other states that I'm setting up franchises in have the same enlightened method.
