1.) Can you do family or Group ordering (the ability to order multiple size/color of a product on the same screen? i.e the customer could select 1 shoe style, and choose to order multiple sizes all on the same screen.)?
2.) Is it OK to sent a text file to the cart for import to maintain inventory availability?
3.) Can the cart handle importing/exporting a delimited file or do we need to write directly to the database?
4.) For orders coming out to the back end, what format will the export be in?

Michael,
1) yes, you can code osCommerce to list products like this
2) Yes, the contribution Easy Populate allows for .CSV import exports
3) same as above
4) Files are NOT exported, they are printed. However you can install the PDF invoice contribution to allow for PDF downloads.

Michael,
if you have never worked with osCommerce before, I would not suggest offering services with it. osCommerce can be a steep learning curve and usually new users don't create quality websites on their first creation.

Nope, I can't recommend a different solution from this forum. However, I can only suggest using what you have experience with.

For your needs the other cart systems would also require add-ons/extentions/modules and some of them have "easier" install of modules. But then again add-ons for those cart systems are mostly commercial. Ie. will cost you $$$ to buy and some even have running "maintenance/update" costs.
Close to all add-ons for oscommerce is free, if you have difficulties in adding an add-on yourself you can hire someone to do it for you. (The same goes for adding custom functionality)

Sorry, another question... how does the osCommerce community dealt with sending data from osCommerce to a backend system to create orders?

What kind of back end system ? You can create a cron job to export the orders to a .CSV file that could be imported into another software if you wanted. The possibilities are endless if you want to code it properly.
