I have been holding back updating my OSC stores for months in the hope of going straight to ver 3, but it seems that is not going to happen. But now I hear that 2.3.1 won't work with php 5.4, which is the next upgrade my server is due, but that apparently 2.4 will. So does anybody have any idea when we might see a production release of 2.4? I don't want to switch to 2.3.1 only to find that I have to change everything again in a few months...

I hate to be the one to break your bubble, but there will always be another version of osCommerce coming "real soon now." Waiting for the next new version, or planning on it being released at a specific time, is a common error. I've seen multi-million dollar projects fail due to this very mistake.

Moral: Don't wait for the future. Go with what's available now, and let the future take care of itself.

I'm contributing to oscommerce2 github repository mantaining updated jquery, jquery ui, 960.gs framework, removing deprecated code, applyng some micropimprovements in performance, unfortunately it needs to be tested on all the payment framework, in the hope that this changes will be implemented in the next release.

What work is actually being undertaken lately to improve upon the 2.3.1 release?

Maintaining an osCommerce store is a pain, plain and simple. Integrating community contributions is tedious job at best and for the worst will cause immense headache and nightmares.
