This seems to be happening at the same time every day -- about two hours before the daily maintenance downtime. Usually it's the database error message, but sometimes it's a 500 series server error. I'd be looking at what happens around this time. Is it the heaviest load on the server (It appears not to be.) Is there some process running at this time, like a backup?

Regards
Jim

I have the same feeling Jim....I usually run into it around 10:00 - 10:30 pm EST. At other times I see pauses when it calls the ad network but a refresh usually solves that.

Hi All..

There is indeed a backend process that runs at 04:00CET (22:00EST) that reindexes the search database for the forum (powered by Sphinx).

I will investigate this further over the weekend.

Thanks to all who narrowed this to a timeslot!

Kind regards,

Hi All..

The main Sphinx indexer has been hitting the server hard and has been the cause of the downtime. It was taking 36 minutes to retrieve and index over 1.5M forum postings from the database.

This task has been disabled until a solution is found. Until this task is active again, edits to older posts will no longer be indexed and shown in search results (which should not be much of an affect anyway).

Thanks again for helping to pinpoint the issue.

Kind regards,
Harald Ponce de Leon

Harald,

The server was down for more than an hour today at around 5:15 pm EST with the message Down for Maintenance. Was the above changes the reason for the downtime ?

I had no issues, probably the server was overloaded with users.
Please read this line: Do you want to find all the answers to your questions? click here. As for contribution database it's located here!
8 people out of 10 don't bother to read installation manuals. I can recommend: if you can't read the installation manual, don't bother to install any contribution yourself.
Before installing contribution or editing/updating/deleting any files, do the full backup, it will save to you & everyone here on the forum time to fix your issues.
Any issues with oscommerce, I am here to help you.

Hi All..

The forum software has been upgraded to the latest version which includes enhancements to the Sphinx indexing functionality. The full indexing has been re-enabled and now takes 1-2 minutes.

Hi All..

I just confirmed with Geofffrey that there was a javascript bug in the online chat window. This has been fixed and personal chats are working again.
