Hi, I have an OSC 2.2 website. and I have to say implementing add ons to the site is always a challenging project for me fraught with danger and anxiety! Having no real background in PHP or MySql, I've always "managed" the best I could with varying degrees of success. Many times I've broken my site, and/or just failed to get the add on to work properly. So, my question is "Will OSCommerce 3 be easier to incorporate add ons into ones website than previous versions? I've worked with Wordpress, and I like how you basically need to copy a folder over to implement an add on. Is this how OSC 3 will work when it is done?

Thanks so much for any info,

Jason

3.0 is planned to be modular with very easy add-on install.

That's sounds great. Is it somewhat like Wordpress, in that it's just a matter of uploading a folder to the appropriate place? Zencart add-ons also seem a little easier to implement. Also, I know this has been done to death, how much longer will it take before it's ready? I'm on the fence whether I want to change over to an easier shopping cart.

Thanks so much toyicebear,

Jason

Zen Cart is a fork of osCommerce 2.2x. It's actually less modular than 2.3.1. Wordpress is considered modular.

We won't know what osC 3.0 will look like when it's finished until it's finished, but the preliminary version that's available now indicates that it's modular as long as the modules don't conflict with each other.

This may be going off topic somewhat, but are the add-ons in OSC 2.3.1 easier to implement than the ones in 2.2?

Jason,

No, the add on implementation for v2.3.1 is identical to v2.2. However, as previously mentioned that should change with v3.x

Not quite. The side column boxes are completely modular in 2.3.1. It's possible to install a new module by uploading two files and then configuring the new box in the site's Admin panel.

The module system can also be made to make the page centers modular. The Modular Front Page Addon does this for the site's front page. It requires one change to the index.php (or replacing the file) to convert it to using the module system. The front page is then completely configurable in the Admin, and new modules can be added by simply uploading the files. I've done this with other pages as well.

I find it strange that everyone seems to be ignoring the modularity of 2.3.1. Perhaps they're all waiting for 3.0 to go final. I hope they're patient.

Jim

Jim,

My 'identical' statement referred to the manual installation and not a auto installer as v3.x is said to be implementing. I was not referring to the differences in code and/or layout. Each contribution details installation so code/layout changes are not relevant to the original question.

The OP was asking about adding Addons to 3.x, and Jason asked about adding Addons to 2.3.1. My response covers adding Addons to 2.3.1. How is this not relevant?
